Zelda game set in Link to the Past world coming to the 3DS, holiday 2013

The game is probably designed with a top-down camera in mind. For example, when you hit a switch the player can see its effect in the next room even though Link wouldn't be able to because there's a wall in the way.

You can go back and forth, you just tilt the camera back down towards the ground to get a top down view again.

Even if we can't get a full free camera, I'd love to be able to freely change the camera angle.

What's the point of 3D rendered graphics if you only experience one two of the dimensions? They could still do their 3D depth with straight up sprites.
 
Day 1 for me. These are the new Zelda puzzles I've been waiting for since the 3DS was first announced. Very excited for this.
 
The only qualm I have about this game is the art-direction. The sort of cartoony-but-not-really stuff that's going on with the sprites isn't giving me the ranging boners you other people are getting. And yes, this is seriously my favourite game of all time. All the other elements I've seen are OK with me. I don't know what to make of the plain reuse of sounds. I think it's a modern phenomena, and it's not that cool. Sound is very important to me, I like that they build on the fantastic foundation that ALTTP is, but don't just sample it.

What I meant was that games with fixed camera angles dont usually have worlds fully designed for you to look around. What they let you see is what the artists worked on, so asking for a free roaming third person game would require ALOT more effort than you seem to be thinking it would.
Plus if the art and level/world design was done for you to admire from above, it would probably look like shit, or even confusing in any other perspective.

Paper Link mode seems to happen in a limited amount of locations for that reason.
 
I don't really care for the look of the game. Love LTTP so will still be looking forward to this.

At least Majoras Mask is next, right?

Since both Reggie and Shibata made a point of pointing out the perspective change,I think it's safe to assume that Paper Link's perspective will be used in the puzzle design. Having a free camera would effectively negate that.

LttP is pretty damn story-heavy itself though. There's the entire prologue, there's so much talking, lots of build-up, etc. Proto-OoT basically. :P
 
Nintendo specifically chose to cut a trailer using game footage which emphasizes several points:

- The overworld footage can be directly compared to the same area in the original game

- The enemies shown are mostly all enemies associated specifically with LttP and not other Zeldas

- There is a boss or mini-boss battle lifted conceptually right out of LttP with the same enemy design and the same stage gimmick

So for better or for worse, Nintendo specifically wants people to draw these conclusions. If people like or dislike that, that is what they will express and discuss. If everyone just "waited for more info" before discussing anything, no one would be talking about anything until a game comes out. That's not how it works.
I'm not saying people should wait for more info before discussing, or even that they shouldn't draw these conclusions in the first place. I was only pointing out my own observations. And while it's equally as likely that it will take place in the same overworld, similar tilesets and enemies don't automatically mean that it will be the exact same. Zelda 1 and Zelda 2 took place in the same world, only in one game we were north of Death Mountain, and in the other we were south of it. If a similar situation were used here, using the same world design would make sense, as we would be close to where we were before even if it wasn't the same exact location. Or we could revisit some areas from LttP, and have half the map be in a different location. It would still be the same "world."

Like I said, it's equally as likely we will get the same overworld again. But there are still other possibilities open.
 
Finally got internet fully functioning. Seriously the people wanting 2D art...the 3D works amazingly well. Like honestly the only bad thing is Link has the face of a three year old.

My hype just went from excited to 'hyped'. Hope we get some more details soon.
 
Cool stuff, I didn't buy a 3DS until the 3DS XL came out and I'm loving the support for the system so far. They are really trying to give Nintendo gamers what we want from Nintendo in these first party titles. Nice to see them respond to and address the passionate audience like they have been. If they could put this same effort into the Wii U I might buy a home console from Nintendo again!
 
This game is resembles the DS games in its play style more than the classic 2D Zeldas. Link attacks slow like the DS games, the enemies fly back like the DS games, the dungeon looks pretty much identical to the DS games. . .

I don't know what to think of this game. The trailer certainly didn't get me excited.

I wouldn't say LttP is story heavy. Certainly, it gives you more context for your quest than its predecessors (although those were absolutely bare-bones), but compared to say, the SNES Final Fantasies, or Chrono Trigger... yeah. Pretty light on story.

Lots of lore and mythology, though. But that's how it should be.

Not thrilled with what I saw. When I first heard about this game this morning, at first I thought we were maybe getting a remake of Ancient Stone Tablets. Then I saw the trailer. I don't recall ever asking for a direct sequel to A Link to the Past, so don't string me up for being a hypocrite. All I ever wanted was another 2D Zelda game in the same vein as A Link to the Past. An original game set in an original setting that captured the essence of A Link to the Past. Not another game set in the same overworld re-using the same stuff. What little I saw looks lazy. The "walk along walls mechanic" didn't intrigue me. Can't wait to be labeled as part of the "Zelda" cycle. The art style looked really good, though.

You're saying it's half-assed when you've never seen more than a minute of footage, let alone play it? It's a bit premature, my friend.
I said the same thing the moment I saw NSMB2.

Amazing how the 2D artwork just pops and looks a helluva lot more compelling than the NSMB treatment its given on the left.

Not enough devs go for cel-shading on the 3DS when it would work really really well.

i think you're right. all that needs is cel shading w/ a nice black outline on everything and it would loo WAY better

I totally agree. I just asked my quite gaming-illiterate girlfriend which looked better of the two, and she said the right. I then showed her videos of both games, and she said "well, the 3D one looks better now, but still, the hill in the first picture looks like bacon.. or like a mud-river. It just looks so blurred out. The 2D one is much clearer and vibrant. I can actually see that these are trees. What are they on the 3D? Monsters? And what's that? A raft? On the 2D you can see it's a house". Seeing it in motion made the 3D look better, but it just goes to show how well art-direction was done 22 years ago.

Sure, I think it would be incredibly disappointing if there were no surprises at all, and it's not something they would do for a brand new Zelda title like this. But they're certainly making a pretty big deal out of how the overworld looks the same, and the world is the same as LttP, and this is a return to the fixed 2D view, etc. They want fans to really feel that this is LttP, so people who don't like that direction probably aren't going to be that pleased no matter what.

Why the hell are you comparing it with FF and CT when he was talking about story-heavy Zelda games? Lol.

The picture on the left is composed of images from a compressed video, of course the direct-feed image on the right looks sharper.

The direct-feed screenshots of Alttp2 look much cleaner than the image on the left.
 
I personally think that the focus on multiple layers through the 3D perspective + drawn link mechanic are pretty telling on the fact that this game will definetly still offer something new.

Even in the 3DS-shop video the hills look like mud-rivers, not hill sides. My brain copes, because it know this world inside and out, so I know what that's supposed to be, but it was fun hearing an outsider's comment about the looks.

I'm still convinced you're confusing the two but to each his own.

Nothing I can see definitively screams "low effort" to me. I hope you can fess up to jumping to conclusions if you turn out to be wrong. I remember a lot of the same sentiment being thrown around for 3DLand

It's boring that they are, yet again, playing it so extremely safe. Was hoping for well maybe not a reboot but a shakeup, instead we get something looking perilously close to regression.

For the main Zelda installment on 3DS in 2013, I'm baffled that they didn't go for a full blown 3D-game (not top-down).

I dont agree, the looks of this game really have me excited. reminds me a lot of mario 3d land which I loved. top down gameplay with 3d graphics are the only way to go for me, especially if its not the style of the DS games, these were really cheap.

I only have one question though: in the same world as ALTTP, does that mean its the exact same overworld? that would be quite disappointing.

Eh, I know at least a couple cutscenes in OoT cross the five-minute mark, such as the opening cutscene, the death of the Great Deku Tree, and meeting Zelda. From what little I recall of LttP the story was mostly a few text boxes at a time.
 
I wonder how 3D this is going to be. I cant see 3D so when they talk about it like they do in that video, its alarming for me. I hope I dont have the same issues as Super Mario 3D Land. I dont see how I could considering the camera angles.

EDIT: Actually, I might have a hard time with this one.
 
I think I get the problem the team faced with lower camera angles.
2D Zelda games always work in straight grid-like lines. Its also much easier to cheat perspectives and deform the landscape in 2D, so no issues there.
In 3D however:

The lower the point of view, the less straight-lines you get and platforms/objects actually start to obstruct parts of the scenery/levels.
A higher camera is the easiest way to solve the issue of bringing classic 2D Zelda in 3D.
 
Doubt it, it looks like the Mario 3D Land engine.

+ This is most certainly a modified Mario 3D Land engine, although Nintendo shares tech throughout all of its internal partners, so it could be the sum of tech from many different teams

+ Adapted Link to the Past assets reworked into a 2.5D perspective for 3D depth and cohesiveness. People need to realize that this art style was specifically chosen, most likely after lots of testing with lots of different art styles, to choose something that both keeps the fans happy and works most effectively with their innovations

+ There was indeed a Paper Zelda prototype that I presume has been scrapped, with its tech reworked into a core Zelda innovation
 
I know it's been said to death by now, but I just want to join the chorus: it looks waaay better on the 3DS' screen than on my TV. The 3D makes the art pop out and gives it a much more pleasant look.

I mean, 3DS' screen won't change the art style, but it does look better on the machine.
