Some people took my post too literally. Of course the first image is artwork, what i mean is that i expected more in terms of art direction-visual impact, given how many great looking games we've got from Nintendo so far.

This looks like a NSMB approach to the Zelda franchise, which i don't think is so good...

Having recently completed LTTP...

This looks horrendous. Graphics look terrible, and not tech wise either, just an awful over saturated, way too bright kiddy style. Become a drawing really? The hero of hyrule becomes a drawing on the wall?

Ugh.

The art style looks a bit bland to me. It's like they tried to copy the style of the 2D games, but it just doesn't translate well. Whatever qualms I had with the DS games, at least those had a distinct look.

Retro Link is cool, though.

Taking a "NSMB approach" is a loaded phrase for a game nobody's played yet. NSMB is the combination of a safe art style, but also the typical 2D Mario gameplay. Whilst the game looks quite simplistic I'll grant you, that hieroglyphic mechanic along with the level traversing hammer thing we saw means that NSMB this aint.

Ugh.

He becomes a mural painting, not a "drawing"

He turned into a fluffy pink bunny rabbit in the original.

FLUFFY. PINK. BUNNY.

The hero of hyrule also transforms into a pink bunny rabbit in the same game.

While I'm not crazy about the art style I don't really hate it, and it is an improvement over PH/ST. Top down perspective kind of limits your option in style, the characters need to be round and big headed to stand out.

I think the outdoors look great but I dont like that dungeon look at all. Thankfully thats just one dungeon.

I don't "see" the dungeon, as the camera is too close. Maybe that's why I am not pleased with it. It seems difficult to conceptualize the entire floor.

Which is why it make sence to have a top down Zelda game where vertical differences is a key part of the gameplay and the 3d effect is actually enchances the gameplay instead of just being eye candy.
Unfortunately not every one can see 3D, while other people hate the eye strain that it causes, and because of that there will never be a main line Nintendo game that is going to be designed for the 3D effect. Sure, some games will benefit from the 3D but even then it mostly ends up being an extra feature that usually adds nothing to the gameplay.

I really can't imagine a game being completely designed around 3D, unless it a smaller downloadable game, or 3D becomes the only way to play in the future. Which I don't see happening.

It literally looks NOTHING like Phantom Hourglass in terms of art or gamplay

Yep. The perspective is COMPLETELY different, and the art is more impressionist.

New Super mario Bros formula applied to Zelda. It was expected.

I don't like this art-style AT ALL. A hand drawn style would have been much more beautiful. in a sense, ALTTP is much more beautiful... Sounds effects are really great and the 3D looks cool.

I will buy it of course. And I'm sure I will love it. But it's another missed opportunity...

Why are people so excited? Because it's a sequel to ALttP? I love a ALttP, but this looks WAAAAY more like Phantom Hourglass. I thought NeoGAF hated that game.

lol what exactly looks so good about it?

I'm sure it will be a very fun game, but i feel a little disappointed, especially coming from the Ocarina of Time 3D which was a gorgeous game.
Somehow this game looks very bland, i'm sure they could do much better.

I mean i was expecting something like this:

and instead we get this:

This is why Zelda can't ever win their fanbase entirely.

"We'll make it in 2D. Yes, how daring and bold!"
The breath of fresh air the series needed.

I wouldn't know about a breath of fresh air. I don't really care about changing things just to say you've changed them. I know that I think 3D zeldas have all been very boring and fail to keep my attention past the first few hours. I know that I've finished every top down zelda save Link's Awakening (playing it now), and that those are my favorite. I'm glad that this looks more like what I love. I really don't care what other people like. I'm selfish that way.

Yeah, graphics aren't all that. It looks pretty bland. But I don't play screenshots. If the gameplay is great, I can get over the graphics.

I feel pretty bad for the Zelda series. It seems very divisive no matter what is done.

I think it looks a little strange (maybe a tad too bright or soft) but I think I like it. The gameplay mechanics seem really interesting, and it's definitely a day one purchase for me.

Is this sarcasm? They look very, very similar to me. ALttP 2 looks better, as a 3DS game should, but it looks more like the DS games than the SNES ALttP or Minish Cap.

has it been brought up how the game is called "New Zelda" on the eShop? sounds like it's going to carry that branding to me. New Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past 2 sounds bloated though.

This is why Zelda can't ever win their fanbase entirely.

it'd take a miracle for the Zelda fanbase to be reunited. zelda wii u maybe?

Mine says "The New Zelda Game Trailer" or something to that effect. I don't think it's any more than a plain adjective.

It's almost as if people don't care about gameplay. :P
It looks like it plays a lot closer to the DS games, which I did not like. The physics look the same. Link sword speed and general movement, and the enemy reactions to attacks are identical to PH/ST.

By the way, I'm not looking for reasons to hate this game. I want to love it, but the trailer reminds me way to much of the DS games. It's a legit critique since those games get a lot of flake. I'd really love to be wrong! Here's to hoping that it brings in all the magic from ALttP/TMC/LA/OoX!

Can we start making up titles?

Legend of Zelda: Later in the Past

Legend of Zelda: Drawn to Life

Legend of Zelda: Three Demons

Bound to happen in a series with a legacy 30 years in the making.

i expected something much more ambitious for zelda's 3DS debut. a top-down 'link to the past 2' was a possibility i wasn't even considering, what the hell.

Why is this title suddenly not going to be ambitious? There are new mechanics and massive dungeons from what we can tell. Link gets launched from FL12 to 13 in that one gif

also people seem to be forgetting what ALTTP looked like. This style is a nicely fitting evolution that plays to the early LoZ series concept art and general toon fantasy vibe. I like it

I guarantee you a lot of people are going to complain about that one too.

But it uses buttons. Buttons!

So what you're saying is 3D games look more like 3D games than they do 2D games? Well yes, if that's what you were arguing, I guess I can agree with that....

After watching the 3D trailer I'm sold. Sure a few graphical flourishes are missing like the shadow of clouds or more ambient light coming from torches in the dungeons but they have time to fix that. The wall painting concept seem interesting.

The last time they used ALttP's overworld was BS The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets

mJwRJJ8.jpg

The most dramatic change between games was that part of Lake Hylia got destroyed. hopefully they'll do a bit more than that with this game.

Very, very similar? As in they're both Zelda games? The art is completely different.
No. Ocarina of Time 3D is also a Zelda game (and it's on the 3DS), and it looks nothing like this.

You're just trying to be difficult. You know that ALttP2 looks way more like the DS games than any of the 2D games. Obviously, the perspective plays a big part, and the simplified look (the art style). These comparisons should not be made if ALttP 2 was using 2D sprites or had a non-chibi artstyle.

Wonder if the Dark World is in? The overworld in ALTTP is pretty barebones when compared to later entries (TheGBC/GBA games, PACKED FULL OF shit to do)
