WACO, Texas — Local media in Waco, Texas are reporting an explosion at a fertilizer plant with injuries.

Several buildings are reported destroyed. KWTX reports a nursing home was damaged after the explosion in the city of West which is just north of Waco.

Local scanner traffic reports multiple structures on fire with many people trapped. A local school is being setup as a staging area. Emergency units are being asked to gather and Haven and Reagan.

It is not clear yet how many people are injured. Evacuations are underway.

Residents 65 miles away reported hearing the blast.

There's a lot of explosive chemicals used in fertilizer production, no?
 
A lot of my friends that live in the suburbs south of Dallas thought it was a small earthquake at first. They are about 50 miles away from West.

Insane.
 
It's probably an industrial accident because fertilizer is highly explosive and fertilizer plants aren't symbolic targets for terrorists.

Grain solos tend to explode easily as well.
 
The explosion was reported at around 7:50 p.m. in a frantic radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer at 1471 Jerry Mashek Dr. just off Interstate 35.

Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.

Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.

From the link in OP. Unfortunate that it happened right by a nursing home where a lot of frail people likely were living. Hopefully they weren't trapped too long and received the medical care that they need in time.
 
Five people have been critically injured in the blast and at least ten buildings are on fire after the major explosion at West Fertilizer.

The nearby Rest Haven nursing home is reportedly on fire, with several residents believed to be trapped.

Several homes withing a two-block area of the plane are also on fire.

KWTX news reports other may be trapped in an apartment building and that West Middle School was one of the buildings on fire.

A woman travelling along the freeway near where the explosion happened told KWTX that she and her boyfriend saw a massive fireball shoot into the air.

The explosion thought to have happened after an earlier fire rekindled.

The explosion was felt up to 100km away in Dallas, with many residents believing it was an earthquake.
