if the police were tipped off, i assume that they wouldn't have sent a single campus cop, but a SWAT team, right?
did the deceased officer disturb another attack attempt or was it just an encounter by chance (or did he disobey orders and approached them alone)?

I read that an MIT statement said that the cop sacrificed his life for the campus, which would imply he delayed or created a situation that provided enough attention to inform the police to the potential situation, and paid for his life in the process. The implication is that he was just an unlucky guy who came across these two guys.
