Boston: One dead, one captured, city re-opened

The degree of cognitive dissonance on display here is breathtaking.

1) They're Muslim
2) Preliminary signs point to radical Islamist motivations
3) They're not Tea Partyists or Survivalists
4) Self-delusion doesn't make this go away
5) This isn't racism

We have LOTS of information about these men already. We know their names. We know where they were born. We know their hobbies.

So for CNN to say the following:

1) We don't know anything, but
2) We know they were Muslim

is just flat Jingoism. The first statement is patently false. The second statement is cherry-picking from the available information we have, as though that's all that needs to be said.

I don't think you know what "cognitive dissonance" means.

Anyone got pics of naked dude? I want to tease this bodybuilder guy I know who lives close to there.

To be honest I'm surprised they haven't found the bastard yet.

Hundreds if not thousands of military personel are on scene in the area of Watertown.

Rifle bullets can go through bricks. Unless Jay Sosa is suggesting every wall in Europe is made of a thick layer of solid concrete or something.

I doubt that handgun or even rifle bullets can go through bricks. Judging by the pics those weren't high caliber.

So wait a minute...how did the naked guy get taken into custody, then randomly ends up in a gun fight with police, shot in the chair, then dead in the street and run over by his brother?

Simplifying the perpetrators to, literally, nameless members of a minority. Unstated implications that it's the collective properties of that minority that explain the crimes.

It's pretty blatant jingoism.

Except that simply stating what religion or ethnicity they are ISN'T inherently simplifying or reducing them down to stereotypes which are then being used to represent the collective properties of that minority. You are tilting at windmills that haven't even been put up yet. It is ridiculous to demand that all conversations be restricted from mentioning obvious in-context facts about ongoing events. Which is exactly what is happening when all such conversations or references are immediately, or preemptively, labeled as "jingoism" or "racist" or "islamaphobic" etc.

Islam is highly decentralized. It's the exact opposite of how the major Christian religions organize themselves. There is no hierarchy to promote or repress any dogma. It is literally the most 'of the people' / democratic of the Abrahamic religions.
Protestantism is just as decentralized. It's how we get everything from the UCOC that is extremely progressive to the insanely fundamental (he of the effigy of the President).

Certain denominations such as Lutheran, Baptists, etc. have at the very least a regional chain of command, but there's little doctrinal governance at the local level. Sort of the point of American Protestantism is self-discovery of the word, for better or worse.

i'm confused about the naked guy, how does he fit in all of this? edit: NVM

fuck, the second suspect might be strapped with explosives... i hope a sniper gets him before he causes any damage. probably no chance getting him alive :/

All officers warned to beware of possible suicide vest if approaching suspect. Previous guy had some kind of trigger on him.

2 hours: Over/Under on how long it takes to find and kill the other suspect. I am going under.

Nah.

The second statement is cherry-picking from the available information we have, as though that's all that needs to be said.

What did you want them to say, "we know their hobbies"? Guess what, their religion is the most salient fact about them right now, whether or not you really wish it wasn't.

Sooo..just wondering..wouldn't you guys actually consider this a domestic attack? It seems like they have been here for years, and I'm guessing the younger one has a good chance at being a full U.S. citizen.
