IMHO the only explanation is that he is still hiding in the area, just not in the perimeter they locked.

Since they lost him kind of early in the chase before the lockdown, it is reasonable they miscalculated the area he could be in and he simply hid where they weren't looking for him.

For those waking up here is the summary of what happened in Boston overnight. They killed an MIT police officer, hijacked a car, stole a police vehicle, threw explosives(1 grenade and 5 pipebombs) out of window during chase, got into firefights in neighborhood, one of them died from being shot to death by the cops and a bomb vest going off(suspect 1), and the other is hiding and there's supposedly bombs planted all over the place(suspect 2) .

He DID flee the shoot out in a vehicle.

They DID recover that car (Benz). But where?

So he either fled that car or got in another one.

And I guess all the Hondas were reported stolen, possibly by the suspect? When found, had they been confirmed stolen? Where were they? Wouldn't that leave a trail?

The lack of details around this stuff is kind of surprising.

Oh boy, this whole thing is a mess. People have been pinning their hopes on the inch-by-inch search of Watertown finding him, only for the search to pretty much finish and there to be a revelation that he may not even be there.

If he's not there, he could be anywhere by now. A mile away, ten miles away, a hundred miles away. And in what direction? The search radius has to be so huge it's back to square one, like 24 hours ago.
