Boston: One dead, one captured, city re-opened

9/11 was a far more sophisticated attack. Same with the Oklahoma City bombing. Those were far more organized and deadly attacks, suggestive of potential subsequent criminal bombings far more than the Boston bombing. Yet in neither case were either of those cities placed in such fear as Boston and surrounding cities. It strikes me as totally bizarre that a 19-year-old kid playing terrorist could place an entire regional area in such fear. This isn't a knock on Boston--as in, you're not as cool as NYC or OKC--it's just like it seems that something has changed more generally in the US that is currently on display in this incident, and not for the better. Regardless, I still don't see any reason to celebrate anything. And it still strikes me as perverse, in the same vein as the above.

It's a little different because the perpetrators were on the loose trying to kill people. 9/11 the terrorists killed themselves in the attack and in OKC, McVeigh was picked up right away.

It's great that these guys got caught. But it a bit worrisome the hype and excitement that came before and during it all. It was like a reality tv show for some people. And with the showing of the perpetrators over and over, immortalizing them in the media while ignoring the victims pictures for the most part, it'd seem to only embolden others to do the same for the attention. Why kill yourself when you can make news around the world? Be on every TV set, newspaper, twitter, etc.

This year is crazy.

Yea, someone in this thread actually said they were rooting for white hat to escape.

You're being disingenuous. Boston didn't go into a fear-stricken lockdown after the marathon bombing. It was either suggested or demanded depending on the town that people stay home while law enforcement agencies continue their hunt for known terror suspects, who in the space of a couple hours several days later, killed again and got into firefights with law enforcement in the local area, also while using/planting explosives. Neither the NYC nor OKC situations played out this way.

As far as the celebration goes, we're happy that people who indiscriminately killed innocents were brought to justice. You should explain why you think people shouldn't be happy that violent criminals were brought to justice.

Holy crap, the article that has been mentioned alot with that quote about how the older brother didn't have any American friends, and didn't understand Americans... apparently that was written by a friend of mine.. wow. He must be getting bombarded with phone calls now.

Wow it sounds like he's charging like 1000 dollars for each use of his photos now... he's going to get rich as fuck over this I guess..

Thank the heavens these conspiracy lunatics have not infested Europe as of yet.

You have Glenn Beck and other hosts, even representatives, believing that the administration is trying to hide something with the Saudi-national.

Then there are these lunatics everywhere in social media suggesting that this whole Boston incident was a false flag operation orchestrated by the FBI.

Hopefully the families of all the victims do not have to witness that garbage but I'm not holding my hopes up. I just saw a poll, apparently a third of Romney voters actually believe in NWO theories? If that's not a worrying sign I don't know what is.

ps. Great job capturing this guy alive. Hopefully they can get some information regarding possible contacts in exchange for a life sentence in a secured facility or something.

Europe just needs its own horrorific event to bring them out of the woodwork.

You can't imagine the amount of nuttery that ensued in Spain right after the Madrid train bombings. Of course, the fact that the government actually fanned those flames in order to avoid political repercussions didn't help, but still. Thank heavens those idiots (mostly) died out.

Was the price of the Iraq war worth it since we got Bin laden?

Joke post?.. Iraq war had 0% to do with Bin laden. Saddam and Al Queda were enemies, the US did Al Queda a favour by taking out Saddam, just as they did them a favour in Libya and now currently Syria. Just as they will do them a favour if they attack Iran. JUst as they did them a favour by forming, arming and training them in Afghanistan to fight the Soviet occupation.

Blowback is a bitch.

What does that have to do with the Police having APCs? That does not infringe on your or my rights.

I would guess the reasoning goes something like this:

"It infringes on my right to feel good about using my right to bear arms since I know that my right to bear arms can't protect me. And knowing the police have gear which makes it possible for them to enter my home while I'm powerless to do anything about it makes me feel smaller since I still believe that I should be able to keep people off my land regardless as I have this 1700s view of people's property rights"

Guys lets be honest. Can you really blame the conspirators. This has been one of the craziest events ever. Almost at every turn information was leaked, false, changed, and stretched. Im not saying I believe them at all, but I think you guys are forgetting how insane this week has been.

marathon bombings
Police say they think its a domestic attack
internet detectives blame about 10 different people mostly brown people but also military looking dudes (with random devices) and some odd guy in blue
police say they have a suspect
they dont have a suspect
suspect in custody taken to courthouse
bomb threat at courthouse
media evacuated
random truck pulls up to the courthouse with a dude hanging on it
Everythings OK at the courthouse
Sunil is said to be a suspect
Another kid (track star) is said to be a suspect by media and his life is ruined. He talks to the police to tell them hes innocent.
New York post and other sites stand by their info of suspect even though its false
CNN is doing all sorts of bad reporting
FBI releases videos of suspects + images
Turns out they are "normal" kids
Twitter is found (normal YA tweets)
We learn they are chechen islamists?
These kids rob a 7/11
Talk about mulitple suspects including black dudes and middle eastern looking men
They go to MIT and kill an officer
Crazy chase and shootout throughout the city complete with grenades and IEDs
We find its the kids the FBI is looking for
Suspect 1 is killed
random dude is held at gun point and stripped to his bday suit
Suspect 2 avoids capture for quite a while
Uncle speaks about them being losers and hes angry at them
Aunt/father says they were framed
Turns out they didnt rob a 7/11. It wasnt a 7/11 eleven in the first place. and someone else did it. Complete coincidence
Suspect is found on a boat and eventually gives up.

I'm sure I'm missing a lot of stuff in the recap. But I can't really make fun of conspirators for this one. Its so out of this world. I mean this is their perfect nightmare/fantasy because everything is so crazy and out of place.

Glad they got him alive but it still amazes me how a 19 year old kid managed to evade an entire city's police force for so long then it seems they almost stumbled upon him in the end

I feel he won't have much to say and imagine for the most part it was the eldest ones idea but we will see

Drug dealers, gang members, and crack heads manage to do it all the time so it doesn't surprise me given the wealth of places that a person has to hide.

Turkey is neither non-democratic nor oppressive man :P

(I would agree with you though, 100% pro free movement)

I would not call Turkey a democracy due to some of its laws that among some things affect free speech and more, also due to the conditions in some parts of turkey they do have oppression of some citizens (justified or not)

I don't really see it as a conspiracy, mostly just racism and xenophobia that is quite common to many European countries.

But these conspiracy theories that are spreading via internet are something completely different. They do not operate in the realms of reality, you can't have a discussion with these people regarding policy when compared to something like immigration integration.

And the thing is that young people are attracted to these theories, because they combine science fiction from movies into real world events. They are presented like a movie of sorts and offer simple solutions instead of trying to think good ways to build a society.

Hopefully the amount of crazies and people drawn into them stays down. But the media isn't helping, everything is about hype and junk food information instead of journalistic integrity. Has anyone even apologized to people who were falsely accused of having part in the Boston bombings?

I can; most of the information you listed that is "out of place" was premature internet or media speculation and had nothing to do with authorities. Everything else is pretty consistent--these guys murdered and murdered again, photo evidence places suspect two and his bag near the kid who died in the blast, they attempted to escape and engage law enforcement in combat rather than surrendering, explosives were used by the suspects in both cases etc.

Woke up to find out he was caught. Good news indeed. Hope he can give some insight on how all of this happened and why.

Is there a wrap up of events for people. Could not find it in the OP.

And are there pictures and stuff?

Let's be frank, you don't know what you're talking about, agreed?

First, this kind of stuff always happens in the wake of something like this. Second, I'm fairly certain that the only suspects the police have ever identified were the two actual suspects. The reports earlier were people jumping the gun in the media and the police came out fairly quickly to refute those reports. Third, a lot of what you're citing as being crazy is dumb speculation by the media, the internet or both. The actual narrative is simpler. Yesterday's events are certainly a little crazy, but otherwise it was actually a fairly straightforward week.

Sorry if old

https://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/p...-on-tamerlan-tsarnaev-from-foreign-government

What I find interesting is:

Once the FBI learned the identities of the two brothers today, the FBI reviewed its records and determined that in early 2011, a foreign government asked the FBI for information about Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The request stated that it was based on information that he was a follower of radical Islam and a strong believer, and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to leave the United States for travel to the country’s region to join unspecified underground groups.

In response to this 2011 request, the FBI checked U.S. government databases and other information to look for such things as derogatory telephone communications, possible use of online sites associated with the promotion of radical activity, associations with other persons of interest, travel history and plans, and education history. The FBI also interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev and family members. The FBI did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign, and those results were provided to the foreign government in the summer of 2011. The FBI requested but did not receive more specific or additional information from the foreign government.

Who is this "foreign government"?

Wait, so that wasn't Dzhokhar in the convenience store photo? Or he simply wasn't robbing it?

And does anyone know if the house with the boat was searched earlier in the day? It's crazy that he was hiding like six blocks away from the shootout.

Also, any word of other perpetrators? Like the old man with the supposed dead man's switch?

LinkGAF at its best.

Human rights abuses nullifies a democracy? Are we sure we are to go down that road?

Democracy is not an absolute. Free speech is one of the most important parts of democracy, Turkey not having free speech makes its democracy very very weak.
Turkey treats its citizens differently based on their etnicity, religion and nationality, also something that does not belong in a democracy.

Though my standards on what is a democracy is quite high. I do not see Thailand as a true democracy either.

So we've gone from Turkey not being a democracy to being a very, very weak one.

Anything else you want to change?

How would you rank the United States in its treatment of its citizens and its impact on its own democracy?
