Skullgirls DLC Character vote | The Campaign united us, The Voting will destroy us

Yeah, I'm really not liking the negativity this is generating.

It was all supposed to be fun and cool, and then I hear things about top players abandoning the game because the ONE character they wanted out of 32 didn't make the Top 4 this round.

It's all just dumb feelings, and I hope it goes away. But right now I'm feeling like the vote was a mistake.

The vote was a really good way to appeal to more supporters and the negativity will only be short lived. I'm pretty sure a reason people are so down by the results is because they didn't want cute little girls to be the ones who won and now it looks like they'll be the ones to make it through, I'm sure folks will warm up to them once they start being implemented into the game. I know I was really cold on Squiggly to begin with but she's grown on me the more I've seen of her.

I really feel like you should keep voting the same, stop worrying about this negativity, and just focus on getting the Paypal bullshit sorted out as that's the only real issue.

This guy has the right idea.

People are just blowing hot air at the moment. Like people said before this will be gone for the most part when poll 2 comes around. Don't worry about it too much.

I laughed more than I should've at this.

I have a name for that kind of players:

Retarded Manchildren

Yeah, things like that are just really pathetic.

It's one thing to be disappointed by the results, that's just natural and perfectly allowed, but there's a point at which people should realize they're being selfish idiots.

Re: Voting

Personally, I do think it should be sped up, but I think 3-4 days is better.

ANYWAYS, less negativity, more fun fanart.

stop taking them seriously, you're doing your job and this reaction was to be expected

Except that these "retarded man children" can make or break a game at times. Like it or not their endorsement will be huge help to this game. Only if they're actually well known pro players, though. How many of them play this game, anyways?

I agree here. I feel the male character thing is a proxy argument and it won't produce much in the way of real results(for stuff like local turnout), but if more make it in, I also don't think it could hurt. They were eventually intended to make it in anyway.

If we got a good number of male characters in I think they could have really pulled in people. But anything less than 1/4 of the cast might not have a significant effect. Though sometimes one character is all that's needed to really pull people in, I for one was only really interested in this game after seeing peacock.

I don't want people that are bitching about a vote in the fanbase, they knew this was a popularity contest and lost

they should deal with it

Disappointed Stanley didn't make the top 4, but Aeon and Minette made it, which were also in my original four picks.

At this point, I really want Aeon to win, but the lack of fan art shown here makes me think her chances are small.

For those complaining about no males, did any of you happen to vote for a female at any point besides this upcoming final vote? If so, then just voting for all dudes next round is greatly gonna increase their chances. Beowulf was only 9 VOTES short of making top 4 after all.

If the voting system stays the same and people are so bent on getting another male in then I expect alot of people who split their votes between guys/girls to just vote male all the way for as long as they can.

Wow, top players abandoning because of voting salt? I wouldn't get reactionary over it though, voting was bound to produce some tears.

Ah, if only she had a real shot at winning votes. ;^;

Oh well, I can only hope that L0 gets their proper publisher funding down the line and gets her in eventually.

They are, by dropping the game which like I said hurts it a lot. Isolating the community will do it no favors. You gotta take the good with the bad. They could just be overreacting but if they are serious this is bad.

I think her power increases the less fan-art she gets. Somehow she stealth killed everyone.

Most people didn't expect her to sniff the top 8.

Counting her out at this point is foolish.

Yeah, being a jerk about not getting the character you want is just proof that you're probably in desperate need of growing up a bit. I often wonder how these people manage to survive in a society where tolerance is necessary.

I mean, I'm gonna be salty if my character doesn't win, but sweet Christmas the amount of anger at this is ridiculous.

Counting out any of these characters would be foolish. Pretty much all of them clearly have a respectable fan-base.

The fighting game community isn't really known for its maturity =p

Where did the Parasoul fangirling over Annie thing come from anyway?

It's part of her official profile.

Like NEO0MJ said, it's part of her profile.

Also, at EVO 2012, everyone who reached Top 8 got their prizes in envelopes; some people from the L0 crew were there, and they were kind enough to draw some sketches on the envelopes. 8th place got an envelope with a picture of Parasoul cosplaying as Annie on it. I think that was the thing that knocked her from "secret fan" territory to "super hardcore fan" territory.

That's a problem in desperate need of fixing. People wonder why they can't get more sponsors, this is probably a big, big part of it. Who wants to sponsor a community classically known for excluding people? At this point these are the things holding the FGC down, rather than helping them to ascend to more popular success.

Peter, I think it might be a good idea to reach out to Spooky or Ultradavid and Chen about this.

The alternative is to go 11 rounds, which would take longer, and probably not change the result.
Here's another idea:

1. All - 4 votes
2. Top 16 - 2 votes
3. Top 8 - 1 vote
4. Top 7 - 1 vote
...
9. Top 2 - 1 vote

First two rounds 3 days each (1 week), and the rest 2 days each (2 weeks).

What I like about it is that I can openly support the lesser loved characters the first two rounds until they are eliminated. With the one vote it's impossible.

Even though I'm a little bummed about the final four it really doesn't matter. The only reason this was even able to happen in the first place is because people gave tons of money to Skullgirls. If the fanbase that donated tons o' cash are the ones who end up deciding that cute girls get added to the roster, then so be it. Rather two new characters than nothing, that's for sure.

Personally, I think the worse thing about the votes is that they're being pushed ahead when the game is still basically at the same point it was, when the campaign was first started.

Do you honestly think most of these voters are even thinking "We're getting Robo Fortune, Big Band, and Squigly!" when they look at all these concepts for additional characters? They're probably pretty blinded to any of it, and not considering it in the least.

Also, the lack of concrete info on the characters lets people run wild with their reasoning. Nothing has sunken in yet. "LoL, Team LoliMoe!" I think many people would shut up about a lot of their woes, if they had something visual to latch onto, and say "well, at least we get ___!"

Personally, I wish the 2nd vote would happen after Squigly, Big Band, Robo-Fortune, or even Vote Character 1 finally made it into the game. I think SEEING some real work would truly help people realize "Hey, all these characters are cool, I don't have to really dislike any of them...!"

I'm sure a lot of salt would peter out, if people are staring voice packs, new loved characters, new stages, some of the fan-added characters for backgrounds, Michiru Yamane Music, and community color palettes directly in the face.

But all they see right now are broken dreams, 30+ characters who are in limbo, 10s of whom probably never have a chance at all of being noticed, and the reality that "My donation might be funding something I personally didn't even want". Totally forgetting all the other cool stuff their couple of bucks are getting them...

They invested enough hours to be a top player but they'll drop it the moment they don't get a character? Something doesn't add up here. I'm wondering if it's the case of the vocal minority being salty overall or you're seeing a big jump in charge back requests ?

To be clear, we don't have a single confirmed chargeback yet. And there's a good chance we will never see one, either, because credit card companies frequently just absorb them.

It's likely a vocal minority, but it's still something we'd like to address, if possible. We did this because we thought it would make people happy and excited, and would rather it stay that way. If a change in the voting procedures, etc. can help that, then we should be considering it.

That's why I'm putting the voting-related questions into the new poll to find out just how much of a minority they are - I'd rather have data than take any action based purely on speculation and hearsay.

Seems fair enough. Personally I'm fine with the current voting format. Again, I think speeding it up a bit for the second vote would be fine, I'd personally prefer half a week between each vote though (3-4 days).

Does anyone have numbers on how many people usually vote in those straw polls that are always wrong?

Those are probably a good indicator of how small the vocal minority really is.

The Oscars switched to a system called "Ranked Preference" where everyone submits a list of their picks in order, and then they're tallied. The film with the least votes is eliminated, and anyone with them as their first pick has them eliminated, and their second choice used instead. The process is repeated until there's a majority winner.

I'm not sure if Surveymonkey could actually use that though, lol

The vote was done fair I don't see the need to address it at all just because someone didn't get their characters selected. For this vote I think I am gonna go with Eliza and Aeon.

People looking at Eliza and Aeon as little girls are too salty to be taken seriously. Aeon has a womanly hourglass figure, and Eliza has milf boobs.

Stay Free, Salty Fanbase

Yeah I think that's why people are upset. There were so many interesting characters to choose from but, the top 4 looks boring. Voter's regret I guess.

If Aeon is boring then people aren't reading the character descriptions. The voting round should really have a link that leads to the character bios on a per-char basis.

And there are also people who don't see the rules when the voting starts. You only get one vote next round.

The voting-per-x amount of days thing should be a header on surveymonkey before the voting begins.

I don't know how anyone can say Aeon, of all the characters, is boring. Even if Lab Zero can't deliver on all the lofty promises, her concept will still encourage them to push the envelope of what's possible in a fighting game.

That alone puts her head and shoulder over grappler/rushdown/zoner #48.

Whatever I don't know how many we are voting for. The survey shows up and says pick however many and I do that.

When I look at the top 4 only Eliza stands out as being really cool. Everyone else looks really boring to play as. I'm disappointed in the top 4 but, the people voted for it so...

Annie
*Immortal that has likely run into the main antagonist of the game dozens of times
*Bends the wills of stars to suit her fighting style
*First character in any fighting game to ever summon quasars and nebulas
*Based on Sol and Guts among many other magical girls(not Sailor Moon dammit)
*Only sword character out of a roster that could be 40+ characters in size

Aeon
*Time God straight out of Marvel comics
*One-third of the character is an hourglass
*Summons characters we may never see in the game or in the timeline
*So many time shenanigans that she'll be a pain to balance(plus if done right)

Eliza
*An Egyptian cabaret singer that you'd probably spot only in an old black and white flick older than your parents
*Thematically like Anakaris and similar to Donovan Baine in the gameplay department
*Her parasite can fight independently of her and keeps her alive for thousands of years
*Has her blood fight you on some Bleach Bankai shit
*Changes stances when she doesn't want to beat you down using her massive golden microhophone

Minette
*Level based fighter that gets stronger and more ridiculous based on how many tips she gets
*Possible that fan designed NPCs could be involved in some of her moves
*Cute and clumsy without exploiting the whole sexual angle
*Literally the closest thing the genre has seen to a mermaid creature besides Rikuo from Darkstalkers(over fifteen years ago...)

But no thanks because they're missing a Y chromosome. Any of these could be free for everyone to play permanently so long as they are picked up within three months btw. Yeah... sounds horrible.
