Next Generation Less FPS more Platformers

Better make the new Mario and Knack high purchase priorities then. Publishers will respond to anything that they think they can make money off of. And platformers would be better for them anyway since they're cheaper to produce than some mega budget shooter.

Platformers especially, since those are almost exctinct nowadays, which is sad...

lol at this thread. There are a lot of platformers being released. Your hope for more triple A budgets for them is a pipe dream. Won't happen because you can't nickle and dime the genre like you can FPS.

And people hoping FPS will fall off, it isn't gonna happen. FPS on pc went through a bad patch in the 90's and recovered.

Can you hear that sound? It's the sound of third parties laughing.

Anyway, I'm getting a Wii U as far as home consoles go because that's going to be the home of the platformer genre. With that said, I do wish Nintendo would create a new 3D platformer series.

With the Oculus Rift coming out I feel like FPSes are going to dominate even more than they do now.

I wouldn't mind some FPS Platformers though :P

I hope publishers are more willing to experiment with many different genres nextgen, including more platformers.

FPS are OK, and I certainly don't hope they disappear, but this gen has kind of burnt me out on them.

rolling my eyes hardcore at people caught up in demonizing a great genre they don't care about due to how successful it is

just give me more of everything, god damn

Sly 4 hinted at a sequel at the end. And there is also a R&C film coming, which will no doubt have a tie-in game. So finger crossed that we get these franchises on PS4.

Don't forget Sonic.

Thinking about it, it's the only 3rd party plattformer made with AAA budget nowadays. Generations and Unleashed are beatiful looking games, only rivaled by Ratchet.

At it's current state, is Sonic something that a general plattforming fan can look forward to?

We got a lot of great platformers this year. Giana Sisters, The Cave, Shadow Complex, Rayman....

But I'm certainly up for more. Just don't expect many retail platforming games. Most if not all will be indie or DLC.

All next gen needs is less CoD destroying the rest of the industry in every facet. I think the death of CoD would be the best possible thing to happen to the industry right now.

agreed! I want more rpgs, co-op based games, action adventure/puzzles solvers like UC/TombR, more support and love for indie devs please.

Battlefield 4
Call of Duty Ghosts
Homefront 2
KillZone Shadow Fall
Halo
Desitny
Respawn Game (probably)

& those are the ones on top of my head.

It is so sad how many FPSs we are getting, and LESS everything else.

I want more Hack n Slash, I want more pure Survival Horror, I want more TPS, I want more Stealth, I want more of everything else.

Whatever genre sells the most will be the genre that publishers keep green lighting projects for.

It was platformers and fighters back in the snes/genesis era, rpgs and 3D fighters in the psx era, open world GTA clones in the PS2 era, shooters in the PS360 era. Publishers chase what's hot for as long as it remains hot.

I am suffering from shooter fatigue and every damn game wanting to copy CoD which is annoying as hell, but it's kind of forced on them now since the masses complain about any shooter that don't control like the buttery smooth CoD.

I'm hoping for more 2d adventures, more 3rd person action games, and more arcade racers (come back midnight club )

This won't happen, but given Sony's recent statements, hopefully we can at least move toward more variety in the bigger budget space.

Although I don't want the death of CoD, I do want CoD wannabees to fail hard and miserably.

I really hope that the FPS-scene will take a step back in the next generation and let other genres get back to the light again. Platformers especially, since those are almost exctinct nowadays, which is sad...

You're kind of forgetting that, for as long as it has been technically possible for first-person shooters to exist in their current from (around 15-16 years) they've always been huge sellers.

I don't understand why people think shooters being popular is some sort of fad. They'll continue being the best-selling game for years and years to come. I mean, you can hope all you want, but expecting consumers to get bored of shooters is like expecting them to magically lose interest in summer blockbuster action movies.

Oh god please no.

Generic indie platformers with one art gimmick and one gameplay gimmick at this point are boring boring and generic to me than COD clones.

Online play dictates popular genres (imo of course), so I'd say if there is a change in most popular genre, it will be something online and competitive (i.e. probably not platformers)

Nintendo just needs to buy back the Banjo IP.

From a business perspective why would there be less FPS?

Isn't that the most selling genre ever? People put on the market what it sells I guess. I kinda agree with you OP but I can't see a Market full of, let's say JRPG's because that is a niche market.

COD, MOH, Battlefield, Bioshock, sell a lot because that's what people buy these days. I have friends who get FIFA + COD Combo every single year and get one new console for these same games.

More automatization in platformers
This is still one of the worst trends in gaming that started this gen. Game makers got so caught up in trying to make things look believably cinematic to match next-gen detail level and atmosphere and not video game-weird due to a great amount of real-time player control that they took almost all risk out of platforming and replaced it with perfect motion-captured performances in cutscenes and one-off animations doing it for us to give the impression of danger. All frills and no thrills.

I'm not a big fan of fps but I don't want to see an increase in platformers. We already see a million of them from independent developers and I don't want to replace one over-done genre with another one.
