Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

I changed the thread title because as much as people should read the OP, I know full well many won't, and will instead throw a fit that Nintendo has apparently chosen to skip E3 entire and cancel all Wii U games, in order to better spend their days sitting around jerking each other off.

Saw Lemonparty with Yamauchi, you owe me an apology.

Nintendo is intimidated, they know MS and Sony are pulling out the big guns for this conference, full of great third party titles and new hardware. Nintendo will have NEITHER of these things to show, particularly for the Wii U, so they are chosing to just opt-out...
What are you talking about? There's even a new thread title to help people like you who don't read much before posting. They haven't opted out of anything. You can't spin a change of format into opting out by interpretation.

Thanks, hopefully that clears things up.

IGN could learn a thing or two about naming their own articles: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/25/no-nintendo-press-conference-at-e3-2013

Those numbers are pitiful.

Look how many views the ps4 unveil trailer has in comparison.

But I guess it's a good idea to have a Nintendo Direct for your 100k fans that ready own a Wii U while the rest of the world continues to ignore it.

Yeah! It was awesome when Sony unveiled this at E3.

Horrible move in my opinion, seeing as how they need to build excitement for their d.o.a. system. Nintendo directs are for the hardcore fans and just not good enough for what they need. Bad, bad move.
The news still makes the press though. E3 isn't as casual as you think unless consoles are getting revealed..

Alright, well you're going to do your thing, but really a rose by any other name smells the same and, as stated, the news gets reported and put up by every major gaming news site anyway. Call it a Nintendo Direct, call it an E3 Conference - what difference does it make?

Lol Thank You

like, what do you think is going to happen

the time allotted for nintendo's usual big conference will come up and then instead of people online streaming/people with Spike or G4 watching a live camera feed of a theater presentation that's 30% charts and shit, they'll be streaming or watching on tv a recorded presentation and then afterwards you'll get press hands-on and video and shit like usual from any press events

i really doubt that this means nintendo is going to sneakily just throw up a 15 minute nintendo direct on youtube at 2AM EST

Kinda crazy. Not like their conference has been super impressing me in the last few years but still, always kind of cool to see stuff on the big screen.

My guess is they know they can't compete against not one, but two console reveal press conferences.

Yes, they'll have tons of software announcements but the press will be busy taking in not just new next gen games on ps4 and 720, but console coverage. Pricing, release dates, hands-on, etc. just seems far more critical at this point.

Another positive about this is that they aren't limited to just giving each game a short 5 to 10 minute showing. Which is what they would be doing in a stage presentation with some clips being released later if we're lucky. Some games don't even make it to the presentation and are only talked about afterward. Wonderful 101 for example. This way each game can possibly be given the attention it deserves in a long Nintendo Direct or several mini-directs devoted to each game during the entire E3 period.

Imagine a mini-direct 20 minutes long just on the new 3D Mario game. Or Mario Kart. Or Wind Waker. Or Monolith Soft's game. On Bayonetta 2. Whatever third party games there are as well. Include in that interviews. They do this already.

Yeah now that I thought about it, it makes sense for Nintendo to make this. They would look kinda bad after all the things Sony and MS will reveal. At least for part of the audience. But then again, if you are going to do it anyway, I still prefer an actual live conference instead of a recorded direct. I mean, the directs are not bad, they are fun, informative, and do include lots of reveals, but it just doesnt have the same feel as a conference with unexpected announcements...

Nintendo will have NEITHER of these things to show, particularly for the Wii U, so they are chosing to just opt-out... that is how I'm interpreting this, no matter how they spin it. The 3DS may be enjoying a period of prosperity but these are still dark times for Nintendo >.> Iwata becoming NOA CEO is not a good thing either in my eyes. It will only bring further disconnect between what American gamers want and what those of japan do.

Panic mode Nintendo :/

On the one hand, this greatly saddens me, as it has been a tradition of mine of over 10 years now to watch Nintendo's E3 presentation live each year. I love the nostalgic feeling of waking up early that morning and smoking a whooooole bunch while watching the conference.

On the other hand, I just registered for my industry pass, so I guess I'll get to play what they have on hand regardless. I kinda wanna try to get invited to these press events too, as the lines tend to be insufferable otherwise.

Nothing can beat the feeling of a great E3 press conference in my mind, though. It's such an amazing hype builder. Over the years, though, Nintendo's had more duds than hits in that regard; hopefully this new system works to better present their games without the risk of so much scrutiny.

This also means no chance of another Ravi drums repeat ever. Sucks.

Pretty much. It's ridiculous how much of a stir has been caused by what, right now, seems to be Nintendo making the same general announcements as they would have, to the same people, but in a different format.

That's my problem with using ND as their primary source of PR -- it really only get's to the hardcore fans.

I still think one of Nintendo's main problems is that they haven't figured out how to tell the mass audience that they launched a new console last November. Way too many of those people don't even know the Wii U exists, or is in fact a new console.

We might not even get price and details from Sony and Microsoft.

Also both consoles will have been revealed before E3. This would have happened regardless and if it goes as well as they hope it will probably be permenant even when Micro and Sony have no new consoles to show.

Uh...

With some of our recent installments of Nintendo Direct, it became common to see total views for a single video reach five hundred to six hundred thousand in a matter of about 10 days on the Nintendo eShop while they did not show apparent growth on YouTube, meaning that people do indeed actively watch our videos on the Nintendo eShop. It is no exaggeration to say that the most preferred viewing option has now become the Nintendo eShop, and it is not uncommon to find that approximately 60 to 70 percent of total views come from the Nintendo eShop.

You can do the math yourself, but that's a pretty respectable number.

That may be part of it, but this is the model Sony & Microsoft should both go to when they're not launching hardware as well. It just makes no sense to bore people with crap they don't care about for 30 min-1 hour before getting to the good stuff.

Will nintendo directs be on the day of their supposed conference? Because that would be awesomely trolling.

I think this is a poor move. Isn't the press more likely to write about the wii-u if nintendo invited them to E3? A N-Direct would catch the attention of Time Magazine, WSJ ect.. [
plan does not compute.

Its as if nintendo is forgoing the blue ocean strategy and focusing on their hardcore fans.

Nintendo says 60-70% of Nintendo Direct views come from the eShop, not Youtube. There's also Nintendo's own streaming version on their website. Not to mention, I'm almost positive Sony had their PS4 unveil featured on youtube and promoted the hell out of it on other websites to get more views.

even third parties have their own conferences, even if they have only one game to highlight for the whole year. this is a shameless admittance of failure in my view.

Your view must be blocked by something, but I won't guess what...

Thread gone to shit despite EatChildren's best efforts, oh well, got the real info despite others' ongoing worst efforts...

Not that I'm disagreeing but:

A) You think CNN or the AP is going to cover it?
B) Do you think whether they do matters?

This is what you are supposed to do.

Yeah. I am not with everyone freaking out, but Nintendo should without doubt be trying to secure these kinda deals to help get the word out. Not spending tons of money on a presser is smart, so long as these kinda things are in place.

If some tech writer for CNN or the AP goes to the press events or something noteworthy enough to make it into a mainstream press article comes out of the conferences, yes?

Ridiculous over reactions. They will still be there, their ND will still be part of the E3 atmosphere and coverage. Their other events will still get coverage if they bring the games.

Nintendo not going HD with the Wii has finally caught up to them and now both Sony and MS are a console gen ahead. The gimmick to get all the old people in gaming has run it's course. Lack of true Wii U support tells me they are finished.

If they are going to do this and just not tell anyone when they have a event then its going to backfire. Only the hardcore Nintendo fans are going to watch it and they probably already have a WiiU. It could work well if they actually try to get attention from people other then hardcore Nintendo fans. At least they are still showing games at E3 though.

Press conferences are for the mainstream media. Those people who write articles for customers Nintendo is looking to recapture. They're not going to watch a stream and report on it. Completely boneheaded move.

I'm not exactly sure that most of the views coming from the eshop is healthy, but

Great, they're taking directly to people who own their systems. Everyone else though...

There's still plenty of 3DS owners who could be watching Wii U stuff on the handheld to look to see if there's anything for them.

What, no Nintendo at E3? Interesting indeed.

I swear the amount of illiterate people on this board is growing.

So the megatons being announced through Nintendo direct is lesser then it would be at E3 because of the sony and ms pissing contest?

Some of you are weird.
