Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

I dont see why they would if E3 doesnt make sense now for nintendo why would it make sense next year?

Only they ARE there, they just not doing a big PRE-e3 conference, they still on the showfloor with tonnes of games to be played and showcased to the press, plus several smaller press events and NDs.

Strong statement from Nintendo. It says to me that they don't feel that their lineup at E3 will be compared favorably to MS and Sony's offerings by the press, and so they are trying to artificially create a situation where they cannot be compared. If they feel their lineup is weak, I wonder what we'll feel after seeing it. Lol.

I think it says nothing about the strength of their lineup and more about competition against two new consoles. It's like Microsoft E3 2006,remember how awesome it was? Neither do I.

Yeah, I even thought that maybe Nintendo could be the secret winner after e3 with a huge line-up and a WiiU revision...

This move shows how little faith they have in their showing...

I dont think their lineup is gonna be weak. I do think there's no way in hell they would have been able to compete against Sony and MS being all about new games for NEW hardware

so yeah probably smart
Yep

Going by their Wii U direct a few months ago this E3 will be a dream for Nintendo fans. It's everyone else that Nintendo knows they can't capture this E3. Very different from having nothing to show.

Keep telling yourself that, bud. Advertise it as a steamed E3 Conference or a Nintendo Direct. Whatever. Why would people watch an E3 conference but not a Nintendo Direct that filled more or less the same purpose?

For what it's worth, since the introduction of Nintendo Direct I started expecting that their E3 conferences would get the ND branding. Had that happened, this transition would have been a little less jarring.

But do they have enough to fill a press conference? They would need maybe 8 games, spend about 8 mins on each, and full a little over an hour.

If they did, you could bet that they'd show them off in a conference. Everything we know doesn't make this seem likely however.

3D Mario
Mario Kart
WW HD
X
Retro Game
Bayonetta 2
Super Smash Bros
Pikmin 3 (Yes I know)
W101 (Yes I know)

Just add in some 3DS stuff like X/Y and you have yourself a conference. Its just plain dumb too think that Nintendo has no games to present.

No idea if this is good or bad. Can go either way.

But LOL at the "They have no games" hyperbole. Guess 3D mario, Mario Kart, Yoshis Yar, X Smash bros, Wind Waker HD, Bayonetta 2 are not considered not games...

So that basically means they have nothing more to show what they haven't already shown? Oh dear.

Uhm... No?

We know Mario 3D and Mario Kart will be playable at E3, and that SSB will be shown. We know Monolith and Retro's game are working in progress. Also Bayonetta 2.

All those would have made a great E3 conference.

I think it's an error to not have a conference at all (or a big one). Outside game journalists/sites, at least here in my country you could see some mentions to E3/TGS/Gamescom in the news on tv or newspapers, so you can see something about the conferences outside gaming forums/sites. Now with this, only sony and ms will be mentioned in this kind of places regarding this events.

Apart from these exclusive events for visitors, we are continuing to investigate ways to deliver information about our games directly to our home audience around the time of E3. We will share more information about them once they have officially been decided.

Sounds like we'll get a Nintendo Direct just a day or two before E3 imo. They did this last year too, and the ND was more informative than their live presentation.

Too bad most of the game industry doesn't go gaga over the stuff like we Nintendo fans do. It's a big world when you take off the Nintendo glasses.

Too bad a whole lot of consumers do. You know everything that Sony showed at that conference to announce the PS4, every game shown will be put sold by Mario Kart. The intelligentsia of the games industry don't matter at all. No one gives a fuck about what Garnett Lee or whomever thinks when they are at Best Buy buying Christmas presents.

No, no it doesn't.

It simply means they no longer see the value in a 1 hour press conference when they can have multiple, tailored, smaller and more accessible presentations directly to consumers/press whenever they feel like it.

Exactly. Not sure where this "Nintendo fears its lineup is too weak" comes from, to be honest.

You know they will be at E3 right? Their games will be there. No lune up in the world can compete against two console launches, ask Microsoft.

Obligatory, but truly, I'm glad. I hope Sony and MS follow suit. Just show us your wares. I don't need the whole dog & pony show, complete with awkward, non-extemporaneous spiels about underwhelming products like that finger doodad.

In terms of execution a pre-canned Direct will be far better than an E3 conference anyway. You can avoid all the cringeworthy on-stage interactions, controller failures, audience mocking and just show us the good shit.

I actually do they had Gears/halo3 and GTA4 announcement it was pretty good actually.

Yeah, not seeing why folks are happy that it's come to this.

But those shows are glorious. I don't think it helps much in favour of commercial succes to do them for Nintendo, MS or Sony. But for us GAF people they make E3 so great. :'(

Dont worry you will still get the same show, only now without backward pauses when crowd is refusing to clap.

On the other hand, this might work.

If I have to sit through another big wubwubwub fest with CoD trailers and stuff that got leaked weeks before E3 I'd be dissappointed. (Looking at you MS).

I'm worried about this new approach. I don't think it will help them at all not having a big E3 presentation.

I wonder where this attitude comes from considering that my most vivid memories of E3 are the the utter embarrassments.

When Sony and MS follow suit I will miss the whole show for its entertainment value, but not its effectiveness of giving me new information about the industry.

I wonder if they feel like they can reach the audience in a more direct way (pun intended) with the ND, but it makes me wonder if there is really not much to announce besides the known titles so that is why they won't have a regular presentation.

I dont think so though. Its obvious as hell that Nintendo dont give much care to E3 anymore. Stuffs like wonderful 101 and fire emblem the awakening localization were not announced on E3 stage, and they have their own pre E3 ND last year too, in addition to a normal ND that month. Stuffs like LTTP2, Bravely default localization are easily E3 megaton material but they didn't even save them for E3.

That's actually a great idea!

I just love the Nintendo Directs. They are such a smart and effective way of providing people with information. They are like mini-E3 presentations, only much more frequent.

I really like the way Nintendo thinks here.

Take it easy. We're talking about E3 showings, not sales numbers.

Maybe because those are the only official E3 Conferences videos I found on YouTube? No, it must be because I'm biased, sure. :P

@DarkLordMalik: They use their official site /Ustream/Nico-Nico (Japan) for streaming conferences, then they put it on eShop and YouTube.
There were 7.5M viewers for that conference Ustream, with a concurrent high of 1M.

When I've viewed E3 conferences on live-streams they've tended to overload servers on multiple sites and finding a good one has generally been hard (so, on the plus side this avoids that problem). But I can't recall any of the numbers of concurrent watchers.

This is for Microsoft's conference 2009, for example. http://mashable.com/2009/06/01/e3-live-stream/ 1.6M viewers from that site.

I don't really know if looking at YouTube stats is the best comparison.

What do concurrent and/or total viewer numbers get to for Nintendo Directs?

I'm so glad about this. In ND's we get gaming news without all the marketing spiel and graphs explaining things I don't really care about all that much.

The best thing about last E3 from Nintendo was the Nintendo Direct anyways.

Good. I've always found these conferences boring as fuck. Never got the hoopla for any of them. They're usually overly long and poorly organized.

Times change. Once a year reveals seems like they're going the way of the dinosaur.

Nope, because they'll still be at the event with demo's and stands etc, so the press will still cover them just the same. All the other stuff like big announcements, sizzle reels etc will be covered whenever Nintendo feel like it and when the focus is purely on them - not when they're vying for time/journalists affections with their competitors.

It's nice that they acknowledge that the majority of gamers don't want to hear about sales figures and marketing strategies, but rather just want to see new software announced and demoed. I'm being pretty optimistic about it, actually.

So it's more about the meltdown show on Gaf?

Judging by some past ND and the Bayonetta2 meltdown, I'd say we're still going to get the same circus around here as always, just with less whining about Sales Figures presentations or orchestra performances.

Makes sense, Nintendo want more and more control about what they want to show.
Doing Nintendo Direct for gamers and press event for gaming journalist is not that dumb, we'll see if it's better or not.

Who was forcing them to talk about sales figures and marketing strategies? If Nintendo came out and went wall-to-wall new software announcements and demos at a big E3 press conference, that would probably go over pretty damn well

Those conferences are the best part of E3, so this obviously sucks. I can't see how much it would cost them to get what's essentially a cheap extra advertising, regardless of what else they're doing.
