Are you kidding? These games are bigger than any other game, they'll get media just fine.
It *could* be that they're adopting the Hannukah model; instead of one day of presents they'll have five (crazy?) nights. And that's the closest I'll ever come to quoting Adam Sandler.

Ah this reads so much like another "we're not competing with THEM" moment from Nintendo. Wouldn't be surprised to see Reggie blurt out some disparaging "having a big conference is DUMB, only DUMMIES do that" message.

This will probably allow them to focus on the individual games in greater detail, so we should get more info out of this than if everything was crammed into a 60-minute conference and later we had to hunt for hands-on impressions for more details.

I love Nintendo Direct events but E3 is THE EVENT.

Strong statement from Nintendo. It says to me that they don't feel that their lineup at E3 will be compared favorably to MS and Sony's offerings by the press, and so they are trying to artificially create a situation where they cannot be compared. If they feel their lineup is weak, I wonder what we'll feel after seeing it. Lol.

The media is just loving the WiiU just now. I can't pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV without seeing the WiiU splashed all over it. Pop songs are constantly mentioning the WiiU in their lyrics. Characters in hit TV shows are constantly talking about the WiiU.
Whenever I go out into the street all I ever hear people talking about is the WiiU. Constantly yammering on about it. I see teenage girls walking about with Iwata t-shirts and it drives me mad.
Finally I'd had enough and I said "STOP TALKING ABOUT THE WIIU' and which point an elderly lady turned to me and said '..., what about the Vita sonny?".
Damn these super successful systems are just killing me mang.
No one in the mainstream media cares about the WiiU. No. One.

I expect Iwata on an iconic place in USA and saying that he now rules all the world during the next Direct, probably in a Luigi costume.
I don't think a lineup consisting of at least Mario 3D, Mario Kart and Smash Bros. can be considered weak. Add to that WW HD, X, etc. and it gets even stronger.
Well compared to the competition, anything would feel weak next to new console offerings. Then again, we already knew that it would be like that for a while (though I don't think many of us expected them to drop their main press conference this year)
I'm disappointed myself, I enjoy watching these 'live' conferences but ah well. At least we're finding out just over a month in advance.

So mostly Nintendo fans see Nintendo Direct. No surprises there.
To make others understand what i am trying to say here. I am not a Nintendo or Ubisoft fan yet i watched their conference every year(Whenever they had one). This is because i don't miss a moment of E3 even if i have no interest in it.
If Nintendo will go for ND only, they will potentially lose viewers, that's for sure.
I hardly remember anything outside of a conference getting huge hype in the press at E3.

They could have easily made a more power console and sell it at what they are selling the WiiU for.
Iwata went for the expensive gimmick instead and gimped the main console but that's for another thread.
Have you noticed in recent years you hear and see of miyamoto less? No one else within Nintendo has really been pushed as a face since apart from Iwata who pushes in everywhere in order to get his face on YouTube.

I'm pretty sure the media is going to go full graphics-whore for this E3; Nintendo will not do well in those comparisons. They don't need to have a 'weak' lineup for this to happen. They are just trying to differentiate themselves. No need to read anything in between the lines.

Dude you need to stop labeling people. Some people may not even want to participate in a thread that if they say something like that they are automatically labeled.
Umm Nintendo's shown they do have games, if you didn't notice they announced a new Zelda and Yoshi's Island just last week. E3 material right there but they decided to show them now.
Nintendo has games to show, and they said they will show them at E3. They will have a booth there to show the games off, just not a conference.
I don't think it is a good idea, but they do have games.

So Mario 3D, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Yoshi Yarn, X, all the 3DS titles aren't games. Please, tell me what are those. Slices of bread, socks, pants, bottles...please, tell me what those things are if they're not games.

Seems like a missed opportunity at a time when they should really be doing whatever it takes to build some hype of their own in the face of Sony and MS pulling out their big guns. What concerns me more than the lack of a conference though is the fact that they intend on focusing mostly or entirely on stuff slated for this year. They'd better have a lot of surprises up their sleeve for the holidays, otherwise the Wii U is going to suffer yet another setback in how gamers perceive the future of their system, or the lack thereof. Given the doubt surrounding Wii U right not an E3 without at least a couple megatons would be complete poison for Nintendo.
Please do enlighten me: what else does there need to be for their lineup to be considered anything else but weak?
I think there is a bit of truth in both sides. I see myself going with Side A a bit more. Practically every big company has a convention to go to numerous times a year. Las Vegas (where I live) thrives off of this. The company I work for, insurance, participates in a huge insurance conference every single year (sometimes Vegas unfortunately, sometimes Chicago etc). Tons of people go, you eat, drink, talk shit about insurance, and give a big presentation along with all the other companies. Now, if my company decided to not do the huge presentation and only participate in closed door presentations, it would be the talk of the assholes at the convention. So, I question this move by Nintendo. It doesn't inspire much confidence, especially when the public is invited to see E3. If my company decided not to participate AND the public was witness....I imagine it would cause some concern.
This whole save money shit....again, every medium to large company goes to conventions every single year, it's part of doing business. This is the main gaming convention, there is no excuse not to fully participate
This move pretty much confirms that Nintendo is scared of Next-Gen announcements. They can not compete with them , especially with the media attention that the ps4 and xbox will get , so they purposely stay away from them. They don't want the WiiU to be compared to Ps4 or the new xbox.

Their last E3 presentation sucked, but it's going to be strange only having 2 major press conferences this year. I'm sure they'll be back next year with a presentation, but like others have mentioned; they could show a ton of new games during their presentation, but it would all be overshadowed by the PS4 and Xbox Infinity*. Next year when all 3 consoles have been on the market, I could see them going back to having a traditional major presentation.

Well, to me it's also a statement against where the industry is going.
MS and Sony conferences have been huge spots for Activision, EA, Ubisoft lately. Nintendo cannot compete on this field. Fair enough. Hence, they try a different approach.
I mean, even if Nintendo will have great games on E3, will the press care about Monolith's jRPG or the new Pokémon, when they have to cover the last AAAAAA title from EA?
I dont see why they would if E3 doesnt make sense now for nintendo why would it make sense next year?
Since from the OP they are still trying to figure out how to convey this to the outside, we are only a month away and this is Nintendo we wont feel anything because we are not seeing anything. Its what happened with Vita last year and Sony response was "Well we had games on the floor and behind doors." Well thats nice and all but you are not conveying confidence in your product to consumers and third parties and depending on the press to talk about your games on the floor admist all the other shit going. Nothing about this is good news for Nintendo. Even if they do E3 demos for Wii U then yay for those who already own Wii Us, does jack shit for everyone else.
So how does a big conference announcing exactly the same games going to accomplish if no one else outside nintendo fans care??
Download times would mean you'd probably be watching the conference while waiting for it to finish. Allowing preloading with a final unlock key could work, though.
This did lead me to a general marketing thought, not specific to Nintendo (indeed, probably a fairly unNintendo thing in general), but could be a really smart marketing tool: Playable Directs. Iwata talks to you, presents a game... and then you get to play a demo. On conclusion of the demo period, the next passage of video fires up, and continues. It would 'save your progress', so you could run demos again once the presentation is complete.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo's first party titles are generally well-received throughout the game industry. The Wii had some great first party titles, peaking in the Galaxy series. I don't remember those not getting enough media attention.
And I will never take off those fancy Nintendo glasses
