Nintendo ditches main E3 conference, still there with games, press events, N-Direct

People go to game sites to watch those streams. Nintendo wants to kill those sites because they're not interested in under powered consoles with nothing but Nintendo games.
Um, that doesn't answer my very simple question.

And no, sites won't die just because Nintendo does that, nor are they stupid to think so.

Also, why would they attend E3 at all in such a case anyway? E3 is press only. Why put up games and press events, how does that kill the press?

My guess is Nintendo is going to try and use a closed environment to enhance whatever they have to the best of their ability, without having any direct comparisons drawn to the competition.

That, and most likely they'll have no 3rd party support on stage this year which might be noticeable.

You have to understand Nintendo sees sites like Giantbomb, Kotaku, Gamespot etc as the enemy. A necessary evil they're trying to make unnecessary. They're doing what they can to undermine their relevance.

Yeah actually this is most likely why, fact is those reporters won't be writing their new pieces in front of Nintendo staff so they wont be able to control what they say, and I'm pretty sure they won't be naive and stupid enough to believe whatever Nintendo feeds them about being on the same level as MS/Sony's new hardware.

If Reggie says shit like 'COD looks the best on our system ect' online, imagine what crap he's gonna spout out behind closed doors!
 
Miracast is actually secret black ops technology that is designed to infiltrate your brain and take over your household. Nintendo has been experimenting with electroencephalography for years to measure the best way to gain control over weaker minds (like children) through WiFi signals.

But their plan was ultimately stymied by poor Wii U sales, ensuring that their wave-based message of "Man I fucking hate Kotaku" never permeates in to the mainstream's consciousness (what little there is - as we all know, most non-gamers are, at best, Forest Gump-like in their cognitive abilities).

Now they have moved on to step two, super-liminal messaging, wherein they put out videos designed to crush the media in one fell swoop.
 
I think this announcement is a clear message to all that no-one outside of the established Nintendo hardcore and gaming press are interested in the Wii U and regardless of whether they throw every franchise they have in their locker up on stage, they still won't be interested. From a business perspective it's probably good that they're changing focus to try and grow the user base, but it's a telling sign.

If that were true they wouldn't be forecasting 9 million WiiU's this FY, that's like 50% of the Nintendo fanbase.

They're not undermining anything. They're attempting to reach an audience in their own way. If those outlets don't thrive on Nintendo fans by their own choice, Nintendo going directly to said fans doesn't change anything about those sites. Those sites can also still critique a press event and a consumer Direct just as well as a conference, if they care to. They aren't harmed by any of this, if anything it's more things for them to write about plus an exclusive press event we don't get a live stream of so will rely on them for any information that may differ from what we get, like any questions they may be able to ask, like previous post-conference round tables.
 
sounds like they know they can't show up xbox and PS4, but goddamn they could have had their best E3 in a long while. Pulling out all the big guns and a small price drop, I love the spectacle of E3.

They're not though are they, it'd be announced with this.

This wasn't really an "announcement" though. It was Iwata giving a message at an investor's briefing, saying that actual details about how they'll spread the message to consumers will come as the event approaches. People are acting like Nintendo directly said that their entire E3 presentation will be a 5 minute YouTube video labeled "Nintendo Directo-desu Summer 2013" hidden away in the dead of night.

For all we know, yeah, the presentation will get streamed both on Nintendo's site and on the usual sites like GameTrailers or on TV stations like Spike at a time slot generally associated with press conferences.
 
They wouldn't do that anyway, they will announce them for a given time like a normal conference. Likely the same time they will hold the press event.

They do still need to actually corral the press to make sure they earmark some time for the direct when there's no other conference on!

I remember RB Beatles got allot of mainstream attention here rarely seen outside new console announcements, most likely because of The Beatles, but it hardly converted into hard sales.

It's not that criticism is present during the event, it's that the event drives traffic to sources who will, undoubtably, call Nintendo doomed after this E3.

Don't really have US data, but UK data shows a major dance game decline. Kinect is also not being pushed nearly as hard now as before.

Music games were already in major decline in 2009. I think the game still sold a couple million off the top of my head.

I actually don't even know which specific Tony Hawk game is being referred to tbh.

That all being moot, considering I don't think sales of particular games announced at E3 pressers is some sort of proof or disproof of their particular relevance to the industry.

Seems like throwing away money cant buy advertising, E3 always gets mentioned on morning talk shows. Seen it here in Australia and on the USA ones.

For about two to five minutes. There is never a significant focus by TV news and shows. Even then what they report is based on what they see on the show floor not the main conferences themselves. Nintendo will be on the show floor like they normally are. News media will be able to view the directs like everyone else in perhaps a better environment where they can focus on what is being announced.

Ugh. I can't take this anymore. I don't see how Nintendo can be more straight forward about what their plans then they have been. Others have broken it down for people yet people still are coming in here ignoring the opening post and the very title itself pushing crap about Nintendo giving up and not being at E3. Some people have no reading comprehension at all or are just being willfully ignorant at this point. Making insane leaps about them having no news as to why they'd do a Nintendo Direct. A conclusion that can only be made if the person has purposefully ignored neogaf and all other gaming sites on the days of Nintendo Directs and several days afterward.

This makes no sense. If the sites weren't interested in covering Nintendo before, what would magically give them the ability to kill sites that were not covering their announcements in the first place? All Nintendo Directs do is let them control the initial message to the public rather than have it go through the games media first.
 
Yes. Like I said before, do not underestimate the power of a media event.

I never watch football (soccer). I never watch the Premier League, or the UEFA whatevers.

But I always watch the FIFA World Cup. I watch all of the games for the quarterfinals onward and any big games in the pool phases. And so do billions of other people who aren't normally football fans.

Why? Because they know that lots of people will be watching it as well. They know that something big is happening and they want to be a part of it. They know that people will be talking about it and they want to be able to say what they thought about it.

Why do you think Apple hypes up an event for their next phone? Why do protest groups schedule their rallies at the same time as much larger events? Why does Ubisoft make announcements for announcements of the next Assassin's Creed game?

Because it gets people talking. It gets people tweeting. It gets hundreds of replies on GAF threads for things where no details have even been announced!

Marketers can't buy publicity like that. And luckily for them, they don't have to.

So, based on this logic: The Fifa World Cup in 2010 had eight sponsors plus FIFA has six partners. Four of those - I think - are strictly regional affairs, leaving ten international brands.

If what you say is true, then from doing no research, you should be able to name at least five of them.

In the industry, this is known as "advertising". Believe it or believe it not, this is not a technique exclusive to Nintendo.

Were previous E3 pressers not hosted on Nintendo's site?
Have previous Nintendo Directs not been on sites other than Nintendo's?
Have you any evidence that access to this mooted E3 Direct will be entirely limited to Nintendo's site?

That would be correct; Guitar Hero: Aerosmith did far better, as a matter of fact. The Beatles: Rock Band came out a year later than it should have, really.

Not a single person who repeated that conspiracy was considered a crazy fool with an agenda and it is well established as fact today.
 
I wake up to find everyone has suddenly become an expert in mainstream journalism, as if they're this alien thing we can only view through a cage so everyone has the same understanding of how they work based on observation.

Though on GAF, that is the assumption with mainstream anything. The strong, unbreakable belief that they're mentally retarded and can't understand the video game industry like people here can. They can only be told where to look by intense marketing and will ignore anything that doesn't fit the way it traditionally works.

If this ends up being a terrible idea, it's not going to be because USA Today couldn't figure out how to get the information because it wasn't at a stage show. It'd also be great if everyone who has never actually worked at a newspaper or other form of mainstream media would stop acting like we're all idiots who couldn't find our asses with both hands.

People seem to be totally missing the fact that there will be an event for the media that will give them hands-on experience, not just a Nintendo Direct. The media will have something to report on, and like you said, they're not so stupid that they won't find it.

I'm seeing lots of people saying that they watch E3 conferences but don't watch Nintendo Directs, therefore this will be a failure because of all the people like them who won't watch it because it's branded as a Nintendo Direct and not as an E3 conference. What if said people have the right basic idea - but have got it backwards?

Maybe part of this plan is an attempt to *get* the people who watch E3 conferences and not Nintendo Directs to *start* watching Nintendo Directs? Get them involved in the ecosystem, and then interested in future Nintendo Directs?
 
I always loved the big conferences, but mostly because of how embarrassing they get.

I really don't mind the approach Nintendo is taking here at all. If the only output we get from Nintendo at E3 is nothing but gameplay videos and demo footage, I would be pleased. Let the games speak for themselves.

And decided it's better to do it in Nintendo direct or 2 because they could never hope to fit it all in an hour presentation.

Even the confirmed games alone would be more than enough for a conference with the usual padding of shit we don't care about.

Hell, the first showings of MK, 3D Mario and Smash Bros. alone would warrant one.

Why are you assuming a dedicated press event and a dedicated consumer stream (and more things but I doubt anyone cares about the retailer event) are somehow less important than a single conference anyway?

It's just a different method for the same goal, getting information out in the open during an event that has people paying attention.

If their intent was anything like people wanna claim here they'd just not be there. No press event, no showfloor demos no need to time the Direct to be around the time of E3 either.

Actually happened with me during E3 2010. I'm watching the Sony presser which was horrible and out of nowhere some guys mention "hey did you hear about Nintendo? They are releasing Ocarina of Time 3D and Star Fox 64 3D for 3DS. First images were just shown". On my homeforum, everybody started talking about OoT 3D instead of Sony.

Directs may be there, but it's not the same thing as a live conference.

Oh well, I hope they'll prepare something to make up for it.

Thay's why Nintendo quotes Kotaku about 3DS in their last investor meeting. Dude, try again with more sense, please.
EDIT : But I understand the point you're trying to make. That's why they'll organize press events with a huge emphasis on hands-on, to totally bypass the media barrier :)
But, down the road, it's roughly the same. NDs or conferences (big or small ones). NDs just lack "journalist" live reactions.

The Media will be all over PS4 and Next Xbox this E3 giving the media less pressure to show up for a big Big N conference in a good idea besides I don't want to see Reggie fail on stage again for a 3rd year.

We will still get the game info we want and the media will still get hands on time they want
