Chances of seeing Fatal Frame on Wii U?

Sometime last year there was a rumor frittering about that there was to be a Fatal Frame title on Wii U shown at this year's E3. I was wondering if anything else was ever heard of it?

Given how the Prepper Pad worked in ZombiU, it seems like something that could easily work best on the Wii U.

Even if it did get announced though I suppose the more relevant question would be if the West would ever even get it...

"Tecmo's Project Zero - or Fatal Frame as it's known in North America - IP now appears to be co-owned by Nintendo, suggests a report. Nintendo recently updated its copyright status to acquire co-ownership of the Fatal Frame IP, according to a recent post on Rely on Horror. The Kyoto-based company also appears to have full ownership of the spin-off Spirit Photography IP and Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, a remake of Project Zero 2: Crimson Butterfly."

I hope so, Gamepad seems perfect for it. They did somehow make the Wii version of FF2 control like complete garbage though, so who knows.

It's unclear now who exactly owns and controls the IP. Nintendo has obviously had a hand in recent iterations and there was the story that came out claiming they owned the IP, but I thought the attribution was somewhat suspect and we just saw Fatal Frame on PSN. Could be ownership of future entries? Dunno.

Anyway, I suggest full scale boycott of Nintendo until they release more games in North America.

Chances for a Project Zero on Wii U should be very high.
Chances for a Western release are probably around 50% (how did the Wii version of 2 do?)
Chances for a US release: 20%

All numbers completely made up.

Sooner or later, I believe. Doesn't Nintendo now own a chunk of the IP?

How will that help? I know NoA's been pretty bad for 5-6 years now but nothing's really changed.

It's a pretty recent IP in Nintendo's portfolio, so I think they will likely push a new game for it ASAP.
Nevertheless, giving their current development power, it could take a few years to happen.

It would be a perfect match, unfortunately after hearing that both the remake of Project Zero 2 and Spirit Camera apparently did terribly I'm very worried whether they could make it to the west.

It needs to happen. Spirit Camera was dumb but WiiU and Fatal Frame are pretty much the perfect fit. It just needs to happen.

I doubt it completely that Nintendo would develop it.

I would say it's quite likely. Though given that the remake of 2 came out fairly recently, I wouldn't expect it until later in the WiiU's life.

I really enjoyed the Project Zero 2 remake on Wii, which NoE releaed in Europe last year. Still need to play my import copy of Zero: Tsukihami no Kamen, though. But I would definitely love to play a new game on Wii U.

Nintendo funded recent entries in the series, which haven't been too successful. Other publishers may not be too interested in the series either.

Should I play the Wii version of 2 or the PS2 version?

I personally enjoyed the Wii version more.

Any reason for that? I played 2 PS2 years ago but I'm wondering what's new with the Wii remake that makes it even better?

Aiming the camera with the Wii remote, improved character models and
ghost hands :o

In terms of Japanese sales, Fatal Frame 4 was the best-selling entry in the series history with only 73,449 copies sold. The remake of 2 did only half that, but it was also only a remake. Sales expectations for the series aren't high, so I think there's every chance a new entry in the franchise will be financed by Nintendo.

They partially own the IP along with Tecmo, which probably means the have right of first refusal for any new game and wholly own any entry in the series they finance themselves.

chances of a 3rd party exclusive on wii u ? i'd give it about lol%

The point is that Project Zero is more of a second party developed title than a third party now. The last 3 entries in the series have been Nintendo exclusives so far, I can't see why it couldn't happen with the next one unless Nintendo bailed out themselves.
And in that case, it might as well mean no more Project Zero ever again...

Didn't know about that! Only remember Project Zero 2 failing pretty hard in Europe - but that was more due to the situation of the Wii at that time.

The rights to the IP solely lies with Tecmo according to the Project Zero 2 copyright information. They share the rights to the game code of PZ2 and PZ4 though.

I'd say quite high, even in Europe (we got Fatal Frame 2 Wii Remake). It's like the Wii U Gamepad was made for this game in particular :lol

In terms of US sales, latter titles in the series had started to seriously bomb out during the PS2 era, so I'm not surprised the European sales were bad.

- Fatal Frame 4 was buggy and never received a localization
- Fatal Frame 2 Wii was localized but only in EU and apparently failed
- Spirit Camera was shit from what I've heard

- I guess the next Fatal Frame won't be localized anymore if Nintendo is still funding it.

I kinda wish Nintendo won't be funding the other games and Tecmo Koei will just release them on other platforms too even if they're just ports. Unless the rest of the series gets canned due to Nintendo not funding it, then that's when I take back my statement and let Nintendo keep funding it.

It seems like a fairly cheap way to show off some good gamepad features, I hope it happens...and actually makes it stateside.

nintendo funding them is likely the only reason they got made, its hardly like the series was ever making tecmokoei much (if any) money, they didnt even fix pz4 as nintendo wouldn't give them any more money

The fact is, Nintendo knows it's a valuable IP if marketed well. Nintendo needs a survival horror on its platform, and Fatal Frame is perfect for the role. They already worked with Tecmo on the IP. They bothered to bring the remake in Europe.

This is what I'm talking about. Follow your source.

Here's the quote:

Besides these trailers, it seems that the Fatal Frame/Project Zero IP is now officially co-owned by Nintendo. Nintendo recently updated it’s copyright status, and seems to have full ownership of the spin-off Spirit Photography IP, and co-owns the Fatal Frame IP, including having ownership and publishing rights of this remake.

I am not convinced.

I hope to god that the Wii U gets a Fatal Frame. Spirit Camera may not have been the longest game in the world, or the best, but it shows the potential of having the gamepad as a camera. The gamepad is PERFECT for Fatal Frame, and it'll be nice to finally get a HD entry in the series.

Project Zero is a trademark of TECMO KOEI CO., LTD.
I don't think that Nintendo has any say in what will happen with the franchise apart from Project Zero 4 and the remake of Project Zero 2.

More evidence: http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/07/fatal-frame-snaps-a-selfie-on-psn-this-week/

The original report didn't list a source, but looking it up the copyright status in the US for Spirit Camera is jointly held by Tecmo and Nintendo, so they might have been going off that. Since there are no recent changes to the copyright listing of "Fatal Frame" in the US that I can find.

Also a trademark is different from a copyright.

In any case if a new Project Zero is to be announced during an event it would be at TGS rather than E3, so don't get your hopes up :p

Maybe just maybe this week's Famitsu tease............

The games BOMBED. Bombed hard. Nintendo probably funded the sequels probably on the fact that stretching that engine yielded efficient development costs. Taking Fatal Frame to HD on a smaller and more expensive userbase requires the furthest thing from logic.
