Kotaku Rumor: Respawn's Game Xbox 360/720 Only, always-online, FPS, Includes Details

You're saying this isn't huge news because "we're sick of shooters." Who's "we"? GAF? Cuz yeah, GAF seems to be sick of shooters, but the MARKET isn't. That's what determines a megaton -- potential for financial success. Not potential for indie cred.

Well that's your definition of a megaton and it comes with a caveat: you're making the assumption that the market responds well to every FPS shooter, when we know the genre is over-saturated and a few succeed.

For what I suspect is a significant number of members in this forum, this doesn't qualify as a megaton to them personally.

Because... it doesn't suit their personal tastes. Which... considering the fact that we're gamers and not business investors... should be the only thing we're considered about, if we're using that definition of a megaton.

Our source was less clear on whether the game would have a single-player mode but speculated that players might be able to go into maps and battle only against bots. They did not think that the game would have a standalone linear campaign, which might disappoint those who enjoyed the excitement and narrative daring of Modern Warfare's solo campaigns.
Well that makes it real easy for me not to care about this.

I've got zero interest in paying full price for only an online multiplayer shooter that needs crazy time sinks just to 'gain experience' and unlock stuff to allow you to be competitive.

Sounds reasonably. And it only makes my belief that PS4 is the way to go next gen even stronger. I will be happy as long as I don't have to buy both machines.

I don't think they can call themselves the creators; they didn't create any of those games. They worked on them. Producers/Directors - whatever they are credited for - sure.

If they're going to show a brand new next gen game that doesn't even look as good as BF4 it's going to be an uphill battle. I don't think "from the creators of Call of Duty" is going to pull much weight.

And this, ladies and gentleman, is why there is no middle ground in console gaming anymore, and why so many are closing their doors. AAAA or bust, right guys?

Respawn goes to Microsoft.

Final Fantasy goes to Sony.

Sony wins the battle so far (for me).

I hope Sony can do better with FF though...not a fan of recent attempts. Way too linear and boring. Fingers crossed there.

I also can't wait to see this Mech game. I've not cared for recent "mech" offerings either.

Please....someone deliver! Lol

It is large news but it's not 'megaton' news, I think that is where some people draw the line.
MS chasing exclusivity of a big FPS was pretty much a guarantee really, and Respawn making something to try and rival CoD was also quite obvious. Marry the two together and this is where we arrive at, no particular surprise and no excitement from some because we know practically nothing outside of 'sci-fi FPS'.

A megaton would be something completely unexpected.

I definitely see that side of the coin and get that it can devolve into semantics, but the general lack of reality shown by some is just weird. This is a big deal for Microsoft and in turn Sony and Nintendo. To say otherwise is either disingenuous or delusional.

Sounds a heck of a lot better than 'The Witness' in my opinion. +1 for Xbox8 . Plus the zombie game? possibly a total of +2 if its better than inFamous3. Looking good for Microsoft
Also, if it's Xbox ∞, which, as you point out, is basically Xbox 8, that's an 8, totaling +10. And anyway, I mean, zombies in general? I don't know about you, but I associate them with the Xbox more than with Sony: +11. I don't like that number, ... two 1's? Nah, that's PlayStation-speak. Heh: +12. Looking pretty sweet for Microsoft. Yeah.

A significant portion of Respawn worked on the original Call of Duty game.

I just don't get the general dismissal of fairly large news based on rational or irrational hatred of one brand over another. It may not be large news to you, but it is large news in general. Can you really not remove your own personal bias in this situation and admit the truth? Is it that hard to do?

It's such a sad state of affairs that this mindset exists. As if most anyone on either side has a personal stake in the console wars.

Really? Have you been on GAF the last few weeks? The console wars are heating up.

So has anyone speculated on why this should be any different from the current generation, where Microsoft's big 3rd party exclusives went multiplat?

I don't think they can call themselves the creators; they didn't create any of those games. They worked on them. Producers/Directors - whatever they are credited for - sure.

Vince Zampella and Jason West (Respawn) founded Infinity Ward which created Call of Duty... I don't see why they would have any issues claiming themselves as the creators of CoD.

More than a truckload. An obscene amount of money must have been paid for this, unless it's timed.

I'm not sure. It's not like it's a proven IP like CoD or BF. Not to mention it's not even a proven developer like Bungie; they have a great group of guys, but the studio itself hasn't made itself a star yet.

Oh definitely, it's big in a sense that it's pretty much a guaranteed massive seller for MS, but I think it's pretty obvious that a lot of GAFers don't measure the value of such acquisitions on their potential sales - which is why you saw such passionate reaction at Nintendo investing in Bayonetta 2 for example - a game that's not going to sell much at all. 'Megaton' is pretty subjective.

Am forgetting when it came out. Always feel COD has been around for much much longer.

Well Call of Duty came out in 2003, just as key members of 2015, developers of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, left to form a little studio called Infinity Ward. History is basically just repeating itself right now.

Trust me anything affiliated with call of duty is money, word will spread around from all of those hardcore call of duty players online to the core players

But sadly COD players do not really play things that aren't COD...If Respawn wanted to go back after the crown they would make a military shooter...its nice this will be a new flavor but id be shocked if it has 25% the community size as whatever treyarch spits out on PSDURANGO4.

I was hoping for a fresh take on the military shooter from them personally.

Huh. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if this was a timed exclusive ala Mass Effect. Maybe a year or so. That's enough to establish the user base on Durango and keep most of the sales there for future titles if/when it does go multiplatform.

It's not about the studio, its about the publisher. This deal isn't between an exclusive publisher and a little upstart studio in desperate need of a publisher and financial support. Its a deal between two behemoth companies: MS and EA. Any profit-driven company, and especially EA would never cut themselves out of half (or more) of the potential sales of a title unless they were very, very well compensated for it monetarily.

I know you're putting it this way to make a point, but it's not really as simple as that - just because Respawn's game has CoD pedigree doesn't mean people will instantly want to buy it, especially not when CoD itself continues to be such a juggernaut - there's nothing to suggest people are ready to move on to another franchise. If anything, the connection between the two just makes it harder for Respawn's game to sell because you can bet Activision will be positioning CoD aggressively against it.

I wonder how many people that are dissing this game already, without really knowing anything substantial at all about it would change their tune if it was revealed to be a multiplatform game???

Just seems like a lot of people that happen to favor "something" else is dissing something on a console that they may not prefer...not that anything is official or anything.

It wouldn't affect me at all. With these types of games I only really need 1-2 at most. So I would probably have gone BF4 and Destiny anyways. I don't know anybody that switches between multiple online shooters at a time. At most it is bouncing between COD and BF. Then again I could really care less about sci fi shooters. Call me a Sony fanboy if you want, I accept that tag, but I never bought a copy of Killzone and only owned and played the first Resistance that I bought at launch, and I didn't even finish that. I was stoked Mass Effect went multiplat and I played ME2 and couldnt bring myself to finish that.

So no, this being multiplatform would change nothing for me. My biggest question is if this is the right gamble on both Microsoft and EA's part. I'm not sure it is. It faces big time competition and Respawn doesn't have the name recognition that Bungie or Infinity Ward. People on message boards know the name, but I doubt many more do.

I'm wondering if this will make launch?

If not I wonder if they'll do a beta type thing. CoD:MW exploded in popularity imo because of that beta they did on the 360. That got a lot of people hooked on that game. And it spread from there. I'm sure people who were in that beta remember how damm good it was.
An Xbox 360 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare public beta test was announced on August 30, 2007. The beta test was designed to test the servers, find glitches, and help balance out the weapons. It was originally only for residents of the US, but was later available to other countries. The beta concluded on September 30, 2007.[20] The maximum rank for the beta was initially level 16,[21] but was increased to level 25 towards the end of the beta. Three multiplayer maps were available for play: Crash, Vacant, and Overgrown.

Yeah, I'm not particularly concerned with the idea of qualifying a megaton, just intrigued by the lack of realization that it's big news.

Yeah, especially since this game could be huge for EA and they've been bleeding money for the past couple years. Has EA ever done a full on exclusive before? Even their timed DLC agreements have been shorter than other publishers.

I think it's gonna be more of a sci-fi shooter than a military shooter.
With that said, it will be probably be poised to compete against Destiny, not Call of Duty.
Respawn's game and Destiny are both multiplayer only, always on, sci fi shooters if the rumors are true.

Oh my god, the thought of this bombing with what EA probably has tied into it is amazing.

I suppose, if nothing else, it will be interesting to see just what Source can pull off when they don't have to think about making sure it runs on mid-tier 2004 PCs.

I'm not sure I understand this. Sure, Respawn will get a ton of attention due to who they are but what are the chances of this game suddenly becoming an enormous hit right off the bat when it's up against CoD 2014 and BF4? If I were Microsoft, I'd be looking at using moneyhats to plug holes in the lineup, not taking a big plunge on a new IP in a genre that has a ton of competition.

But I guess it kinda makes sense if you're presuming it'll eventually be a huge franchise and want people to associate the series with the 720, like CoD was with the 360 this gen.

Didn't Jason West leave Respawn?

I'm a little worried about how their studio is running without one of the main dudes that founded it.

LOL, look at the tweets they are getting:

I really hope the exclusive rumors are false
Please come to PS4
please no xbox exclusive
I really hope its a myth your title will be exclusive to Microsoft
Really hope it is not Xbox exclusive. I was looking forward to supporting a great team.
better now be exclusive -_- been waiting for your game and ill be upset if its just for Microsoft consoles
hope it comes to ps4. Bigger potential market and satisfy all your fans.

could be good. with the hate cod gets lately , if successful theyll use this in the rotation with BF4 kinda always had this idea where the battle is on going, leave .come back later to fight again. like a mmo warzone type of thing

I'm surprised there isn't more of a shit storm for Respawn's game requiring to be "always on-line"

I thought people hated EA shit with always on-line bullcrap (simcity anyone?)
