Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

Shit, I never even finished my first playthrough of this game. I randomly stopped playing Mario 3DS to focus on 999. That was about a year and a half back. I love the Galaxy games (I even 100% Galaxy 2, but soul was in pieces after that endeavor). Now that I have a 3DS XL, I really should go back and play Mario 3DS.

Though, I need to finish Fire Emblem, and Harvest Moon first.

I'll echo that Galaxy 1/2 are much better, but 3D Land is pretty great too. Sunshine is underrated. The 3D mario games are some of my favorites of all time.

Galaxy > SM64 > Galaxy 2 > Sunshine > 3D Land

I grabbed last night my wife's 3ds and played again. There is no way this is better than any 3D Mario 'cos it doesn't play like a 3D Mario. you rely too much in power ups to do somethings during levels (as spinning a gear to rise a platform).

And It really have a problem with 3D references. Even though the game it's really in 3D, it's the lack of camera makes way more difficult to calculate where a platform it's located in relation to you. (in before you don't see 3D, yes I do, I see all the volume, snow in first plane. etc, etc). It just doesn't work in some levels as in the one that it's a cooky in world 3. But in level 4-2 with a traditional camera there is no problem at all.

I personally don't like 2D Marios at all, so I don't want the 3D to keep on going this line, because there would not be a reason to me to buy them.

NSMBU is better than 3D Land!! :p

anihawk would probably say every NSMB is better than 3D Land, but he's anihawk

nah, nsmb ds is pretty fucking weak. 3d land is at least better than that, and not by a small amount.

nsmbw and nsmb2 shit on it from a great height though.

1. super mario galaxy 2
2. nsmbw
3. nsmb2
4. smg
5. super mario 3d land
6. nsmb ds

i haven't played nsmbu

this is just from the last 7 years. adding older games, 4-6 would be a lot lower.

We're all entitled to our own opinions.

The Galaxy games are in a different level of excellence compared to Land. I can't even consider them challenged by Land, as much as I like it.

whoa whoa WHOA! nsmb2 and nsmbw above 3d land and smg *faints*

I just don´t like how the original one feels. I also find it quite distracting that it´s glossy on the inside..

Will go to Saturn after work and check the XL out. Is the data transfer easy?

Yup. I also hated the original 3DS. Hated the glossiness. The XL is fantastic though!

In regular stages, since you rarely get close to running out of time, it makes no sense.
But there are stages where you start with little time and have to rush, or start with like 10 secs and have to collect clocks to get more time, so it makes sense for those.
I don't think is a good idea introducing a time mechanic half the way in when you could have it from the beggining, teaching the player they can grab clocks and that.

They already do have it at the beginning though, there's clocks in every stage in the first world, and every stage after. It's not a surprise when the game springs the 30 second levels at you in the special world, you already know how to extend the time.

This is the right list.

Good game, but as others have said I certainly don't think it's better than Galaxy 1/2 and I don't really consider it a "3D" mario.

I feel the praise for this game has gotten to hyperbolic levels a bit too much on GAF lately, but I will agree that it's a great Mario game. Not quite the perfect game many would have you believe, but pretty great.

I'm gonna have to go back and play this. I tried the first couple of worlds, but wasn't all that impressed. I remember feeling frustrated at times that it was hard to gauge jumps accurately from platform to platform. Maybe it's because I don't like to play with the 3D on?

Why do people on this thread put both galaxy games together?

Galaxy 1 was boring, full of crap, IMO it is by far the weakest 3D Mario game. It even has this minigames stages that completely suck, as in unplayable.

Mario Galaxy 2 on the other hand is genius, and it is probably the best Mario game ever, up there with NSMB Wii, Mario Bros 3 and Mario 64.

Galaxy 1 had it's moments, sure, but overall the game is slow and tedious.

I think Mario 3D land does not achieve the greatness of those, but a thing it has going for it is that there is no crap on that game, every stage is focused, the game is very good.

The best part of Mario 3D land is that it's best moments are in 3D, like Mario 64 or Sunshine. Great game, not like Galaxy 2 but definitely much better than Galaxy 1.
What puts me off buying this game when I finally get a 3DSXL is how everyone says it's really easy.
It's not, the thing is that the stages are short so if you fail, you try again very quickly and you can go to another stage, grab a tanooky suit and a spare one and try again that difficult stage again.

It's a great game that maybe captures the Mario style more accurately than the galaxy games because of the multiple references to SNES titles, but I wouldn't call it better than M64 or the Galaxy games based on that alone. Really, the Mario games are so consistently good you really can't draw a line between the good and the bad games.

I don't really like the NSMB games though. Maybe I just haven't played the most recent ones and they got better.

It really is remarkable how they have managed to keep the series fresh and good. I mean, people basically "expect" the Mario games to be incredible -- like it's a given.

Can you imagine how, basically, any other developer or publisher house in the world would have handled the Mario franchise?

Later SM3DL > Galaxy 1 > Early SM3DL

Super Mario Galaxy isn't very good.

NSMBW and NSMBU are better than all of the above. Never played Galaxy 2.

From a design standpoint it's pretty great. Short, compact well-designed levels that don't overstay their welcome, with very little (if any) fluff.

But it's missing pretty trappings of a "masterpiece": the soundtrack is uninspired and the aesthetics are good, but nothing really imaginative or mindblowing.

It's hard to call a game that's so good "bland," but that's basically the feeling I walk away with.

OK, I started this again last night on my 3DS XL and I'm a bit puzzled...

This is purely unscientific, but on my original 3DS I had to stop playing Super Mario 3D Land as it was very choppy. Not the constant 30fps frame rate. Slightly better in 2D but still not good. And now I've played the game on my 3DS XL and have observed no such issues. This is odd!

Is it possible that the 3DS XL hardware is capable of running games more smoothly than the 3DS?

Can anybody who has both an original launch 3DS, a new 3DS XL and Super Mario 3D Land verify this for me?

Thanks.

I just "beat" 3D Land last night and I think all of the naysayers should wait until post-game to form their definitive opinion. Very pleasant surprise.

You're crazy bro.

Does that mean you've checked using both consoles and the game?

If not, thanks for your input.

Aww no reason to be like that.
I haven't, but it's just that the 3DS XL's hardware is identical to the 3DS's.

But there has been a recent firmware update that did make some games run better now that I think of it, so maybe that's what you're seeing?

I feel ya, OP. I much preferred 3D Land to every other single 3D Mario game... Galaxy games were certainly more fun than 64/Sunshine but a bit overrated - didn't particularly care for the planetoid concept or the gimmicky waggle portions. 3D Land was a bit easy (apart from a few of the "second quest" stages) but still amazing and felt the closest to 2D Mario that the 3D games have ever gotten.

In what world is NSMB2 better than SMG

I mean are you pointlessly nostalgic or just insane?

3D Land is brilliant, but nobody gives a crap about it... Just like NewSMB U. :/

3D :
1- Galaxy 2
2- Galaxy 1
3- 64
4- 3D Land
5- Sunshine

2D :
1- NSMB U
2- SMB 3
3- World
4- NSMB Wii
5- SMB 1

For what it does, 3D Land looks and plays almost as well as the console versions. You're not going to get a SMG / SMG2 style "epic" game on comparatively inferior controls and a tiny screen.

And even SMG2 had its fair share of "filler" that you wouldn't perhaps traditionally associate with platforming - like fireballing those crates, the monkey ski challenges, those flubbird flight levels and possibly many more that I can't remember at this point.

I've really been appreciating 3D Land recently. I love the big console games for their expansion of Mario's world on top of being fantastic games, but I love 3D Land simply for just pushing you into the action from beginning to end with no filler or cutscenes to get in the way.

I just got the last Star Coin I need, but in order to unlock the final level I gotta beat every one as both Mario & Luigi correct? With gold flags?

Definitely could be. I've still to try with SM3DL, but other games like e.g. Luigi run noticeably smoother after last update.

It was really good! I enjoyed it quite a bit!

As someone else said though, I did feel it was a little slow. Actually, scratch that, it LOOKS a little slow. When they first announced it, I thought, "Wow. That looks slow", then I played it, and forgot that I thought that. Now that I'm reading this thread, I realize I don't remember the game well enough, so I pulled up a Youtube video and took a look. Once again, I'm sitting here thinking "That looks slow".

Yet, I don't remember it PLAYING slow.

I'm so confused... Will have to plug it in and play it through again when I get home.

I know what you mean. Eben when I'm playing it, I'll think 'wow Mario feels slow and more floaty than I remember'
But that feeling always goes away 2 or 3 ,minutes after I start playing.

This thread made me break the game back out. I only finished the initial round of levels when I first played it. Now I have been playing all the extra levels and once I unlocked Luigi I kept on as him, cause well it's the Year of Luigi damnit.
