Games which are in desperate need of a "definitive" version

Nice thread.

Hopefully the incoming mobile versions will address that. Not as good as a remake, but they can become the best way to play the original.

Kingdom Hearts series on a single blu-ray with an app like the Metal Gear Solid Database

For some reason I think an Kingdom Hearts Database is going to happen whenever it's time for KH3 to come around. Though that's already contained in Jiminy's Journal in some capacity, it would be handy to have it on the console's main menu. Other than that, yeah, the KH series in its HD form is perfectly definitive. I suppose one may question Re:CoM vs CoM, but that's more of a remake vs original argument -- content-wise, it has everything its predecessor had.

The original on SNES is notoriously buggy and its English release's localization has to a large extent been written out of canon. The PS1 version fixes some of the problems but is also plagued with awful load times. The GBA release is arguably the most modern but is unfortunately saddled with the GBA system's various limitations, most notoriously its massively downgraded audio.

I don't remember the SNES game being notoriously buggy at all, and I have played through it multiple times. I'm sure there are bugs present that I've never noticed before... but notoriously buggy?

And I have a hard time trying to think of any game that needs a definitive version. The only one that really came close for me would've been Daytona USA, as every home version has been botched in one way or another. But then Sega released a perfect arcade port for XBLA and PSN in 2011, which could be a definitive home port. Though I suppose I would like to see a version with all the Sega Saturn game modes and music tracks.

Monster Hunter 3rd Gen.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a good attempt, but it dropped a couple of things in Tri that were nice such as subquests, combiner man, local Arena co-op, and they also added horrid charm tables and dumbed down the bow guns.

Sonic Adventure?

There's the Dreamcast Original
The Gamecube DX Version
The poorer DX PC Version Port
The even poorer "HD" letterboxed port of the PC DX version port, ported from the GC. It's just a mess.

Psychonauts could use a definitive HD version too.

Counter-Strike is now split between three different versions, all with their own pros and cons. They're all similar enough to be considered the same game and yet none of them stand out as being strictly superior to the others.

There can never be a definitive version.

Naw it seems like a no brainer to me. The translation of VII is abysmal.

QFT; I've played both. VIII's translation is pretty good, though there are a few parts that could stand some sprucing up (notably Squall's excessive use of 'whatever'), and IX's leaves very, very little to improve on. If VII is ever remade, it had better be retranslated in the process.

All of Platinum Games's titles onto the PC.

Just imagine 120fps or 3D Vanquish, Metal Gear Rising, or Bayonetta.

<insert that image of Hideki Kamiya playing Bayonetta on the PC using a 360 controller wearing Nvidia 3D Vision glasses here>

Might be worth mentioning Rayman 2 with it's very large variety of console specific versions. Depending on what version you play you might get voice acting, unique level designs and even a different final boss fight. Revolution could be called a definite version in a sense but it's even more altered than any other version and all the new content almost gives it a sequel feel.

Vanish/Doom glitch
Magic Evade Glitch.

I'm pretty sure the GBA version has a hack that you can use to uprade to the original music.

This. Bayonetta on PS3 is inferior technically, but the PS3 pad is better for these kind of games. PC port would fix that, you could play it on whatever pad you prefer.

Castlevania: Symphony of the night needs a release with the graphics fully intact, the bonus content from the Saturn version (new areas/items/enemies & (adult) Maria mode), with voice options for the original English lines, the Japanese lines, and the redubbed English lines (Dracula X Chronicles). I guess you could have the child Maria mode too if you REALLY must.

Mostly I just want to explore the Sega Saturn stuff.

P3P is the definite version, it was awesome to play the game in VN format and without wasting my time walking around, really made it easier to replay(and female MC was better than the male one)

While I agree it's the best version I think for it to be the "definitive" version it would have to include "The Answer"

I don't necessarily feel that the Saturn version's exclusive content needs to be in a "definitive" version of the game. I'd just like to see a complete version of the original game in that SOMETHING needs to be below the trap door near the castle gate. It'd also be nice to see new areas if they felt more connected to the rest of the castle. Honestly, I'd really like to see an area that's accessible from that long hallway that leads from the Marble Gallery to the Outer Wall.

But yeah, I'd love to have all of the voice acting options that you mentioned, as well as both playable versions of Maria, as well as a new one that was a nice balance of the others.

EDIT: Do note, however, that the Saturn version is currently my preferred version of the game. It's not necessarily that it's better or anything. It's just more complete, and the developers of that version had their priorities more in line than Iga did with the DXC version of SotN.

noooo
NOOOo

the answer is HORRIBLE, the normal ending was perfect and anyone that played the answer knows it's freaking terrible and pointless. I think not having the Answer is a PLUS

I guess FFVII wouldn't count because the PC version has enough problems that the PS1 version (and consequentially the PSN release) would be the definitive version, but it still does need a version that has had work done to it.

DOOM collections don't really have a definitive version anymore with the release of BFG, because BFG DOOM 2 includes the extra official levels from the XBox version, but doesn't come with Final DOOM.

There's also the fact that the PS1 version of DOOM has a different soundtrack done by a different artist with incredibly atmospheric tunes, which are lost to that version (not saying they should replace the original soundtrack, but having the option to switch without modding would be one of the things I would do for a definitive version).

The Last Story.
An HD version must have better textures, maybe expand the story and EXPECIALLY a steady framerate who doesn't go to single digit when someone uses magic.

I agree that the latest 3D Zelda games have small issues that could be quite easily fixed and when fixed would greatly improve the games.

Wind Waker. Let's hope that the Wii U version fixes the triforce hunt and adds faster wind direction changing. A hard mode where enemies do more damage is also needed. In an ideal case (though this might be too optimistic) the version would also include an all new dungeon before getting the pearl from JabuJabu and maybe one or two new islands.

Twilight Princess. The easy difficulty, wiimote controls and graphics are the biggest issues with this game. A small graphical update coupled with GC-style controls and an increased difficulty would improve this game by a mile.

Skyward Sword. This game has more issues than the previous ones but the most important thing to fix would be to cut-down the hand-holding. Give us the option to skip the Fi-sequences or take them off altogether. Remove the presentation of pouch items every time one is collected.

I really want Nintendo to re-release Super Mario 64 DS on either 3DS, or go whole hog and give it an HD remaster for WiiU. It's a remarkable improvement on top of one of the greatest games of all time, and it's a shame that it exists on a platform that can't really handle analog movement.

Plus, aiming the cannon is a job that was built for the Gamepad.

Tales of Symphonia.

The PS2 (Japan only) version has some really nice extras but the game takes huge performance hits (in my opinion). Longer load times (when there were hardly any in the GC version), worse textures, and 30 FPS battles as opposed to 60 as it was in the GC version. Gross.

It would also benefit by some of the features later games introduced like Free Run, slightly better camera for multiplayer, and perhaps the Link Arte system from Xillia or aerial combat like Destiny remake/Innocence/etc.

Is the 3DS screen even a high enough resolution to display the cutscenes at an equal quality to the PC version (don't know what resolution they are)? Not to mention it would ultimately likely be a visual downgrade from the IQ of the DC/GC/PC versions unless they completely remake the game (and seeing as the background are pre-rendered and assumedly 4:3 they would likely need to be). Still does seem that only the 3DS would be able to incorporate a feature that would equal the VMU health display.

Thinking about it, I doubt the 3DS would be able to display the full cutscenes. Maybe on the 4DS.

I chose the 3DS mainly because I was thinking about the RE:DS features added which would add a fair amount of new content to the game. Those first person knife segments and touch screen puzzles were a fun new way to experience an old game.

good thread, OP.

would you count imperfect arcade ports? because i'm a fan of the Yu Suzuki classics, but where OutRun & After Burner both got definitive releases (XBLA/PSN), i don't know that say Space Harrier ever did...the Sega Ages version on Saturn looks about as close as anything, but in the case of those other 2, they weren't just ports; lots of content was added.

Even Super Hang-On (PSN) had 3D and other options, too.

I don't know about free run, but I'd love a version of Symphonia with all the PS2 content, with voiced skits, and the ability to learn all the artes in the game, along with a way to get all the EX skills at once. I'd also want harder difficulties, the unused content such as summon spirits, and Rutee in the arena, and some cameos and references to other games in the Aselia storyline.

I partly agree with FFVI. PS1 was stupid slow. GBA version looks ugly. SFC version is the best.

The "definitive" way to play the game, is...on PC. *wink

Rayman 2 - The PS2 version has extra content and graphical upgrades that aren't found in any other version, but it only runs at 30 fps.

Interesting thread though what constitutes the need for a definitive version is fairly subjective.

Resident Evil 4 for example. We have the original GC game, the PS2 version with added content but cut visuals, then the Wii version with the added content, GC visuals, and new controls options. Of these the Wii version is definitive.

But then there are the HD console and PC versions based off the PS2 version (if I recall correctly). Do we consider the upgrade in resolution to be a feature equivalent to added content? If so than even the Wii version is not definitive.

The HD console versions are not based on the PS2 version (they have in engine cutscenes, the GC/Wii geometry levels and lighting much closer to the GC/Wii version), but they are still missing graphical effects that the GC version had.

RE5 doesn't have a definitive version either, since the technically superior PC version doesn't have any DLC available (and Lost in Nightmares is the best piece of RE5 content).

You can add Burnout Paradise to the list for similar reasons.

Skies of Arcadia, give me the GC port with the music of the original, then upscale it and put it up on the eshop and PSN.

I'll double-dip, now that I'll have to find my Wii for a replay

Ff6 already has a custom modded version of it with better localized script. Don't know if its considered to be legal though since its a mod. That's currently the best version though

I'd love a DKC3 with SNES visuals, the extra stages from the GBA release and a soundtrack toggle like the Sonic CD re-release. The crummy GBA minigames can sit this one out though.

I'd say a lot of the Advance ports fall under this category since they will all suffer from weaker sound but provided more content. Of course one would have to consider whether Mario spouting "JUST WHAT I A NEEDED!" every five seconds in Super Mario Bros 2 makes it the definitive version.

SMA is the definitive version, I have trouble going back to previous versions that lack Toad's croaking wail of a voice, cheesy boss quotes and ROBO BIRDO.

No subquests is such a strange omission. Bit of a bummer. Changing how the charm tables work is just wtf. Most of the other design decisions they changed/switched up are for the better, though.

I haven't used bowguns, what's different in MH3U?

Mario 64 (Give me DS content with Original's controls)

I agree. A 3DS upgrade of SM64DS could be great.

If they wanted to, maybe even remaster the visuals, OoT-style. I would be okay with this. :p

Wii U version incoming. Maybe the cut content will be added back in. I also hope they make the Triforce hunt not terrible.

Let's hooooooooope! @_@

I soooooo feel your pain on FFVI.

It's the best example of this. Why does the GBA version have to sound like such ass....

Not sure I would say 'desperate' need. However I would like a definitive version of Ninja Gaiden 2.

There is lots of great added content to the Sigma version however it also has some problems not found in the first version. So when I want to play it I'm always a little lost which version to go with. I usually end up doing main story on 2. Then side content on Sigma 2.

This. A properly balanced Ninja gaiden 2 with sigma 2 online missions would be the greatest action game of all time.
