Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

I feel weird in that I really enjoyed 3D Land, but I don't really get where all this "BEST 3D MARIO EVER!" love is coming from.

I had more fun with SM3DL than I did Galaxy 2. However, co-op in Galaxy 2 and Galaxy 1 are fun. Galaxy 2 is much more wilder and inventive than Galaxy 1, but Galaxy 1 has a little less linearity (if possible). Super Mario 64 will remain my favorite for being an open-world/adventure game, while Sunshine comes second for trying to mesh Banjo Kazooie with Mario 64 (FLUDD); it just lacked the charm of other games (as a whole) and Yoshi was a bitch.

I download it yesterday and beat the first half which was easy.
The special levels seem to be the real deal.
Maybe gets even better after you beat the special part.

I'd say it's probably the better portable Mario game.
The Galaxy games are better since they are more diverse, but it shits all over Sunshine which is the worst Mario game.

Oh yeah, there's a super special final level that you can unlock after collecting all coins and completing every stage with Mario and Luigi each, You'll love it!!

Lets look at the control layouts for Galaxy vs. 3DLand

As we can see the Galaxy controls are littered with gimmicky, tilt, point and shake functions.

Now we have the, streamlined to perfection, controls found in 3D Land which gets rid of all the bloated gimmicky non-sense and gets us straight to the core of a platformer.

The control layout in 3DLand is one of the main reasons I feel this game is more true to the Mario roots of simplicity in gameplay than the Galaxy series will ever be.

The Galaxy's didn't really do it for me. If anything, their titles should have been suggestive of a more expansive Mario 64 world, but it wasn't. I guess I'll never let go, and always hope that Mario Universe will be the true successor to Super Mario 64. :(

I really doubt Nintendo will go back to the more open levels of Mario 64. And personally I dont want them too because I feel that was never what Mario was about anyway. Mario to me is about pure platforming. I woudnt mind more secrets and hidden goals in the 3d games but the essence of Mario to me is trying to avoid falling down pits,.

So level design setpieces which introduce new ways for you to interact with the game world are a bad thing? A little variety never hurt anybody.

Galaxy was a Masterpiece! It felt like Super Mario Brothers 3 all over again, but this time in Space. I despise motion controls, but never got annoyed with them in Galaxy. The level design and control are Perfection!

mario 64 was so gimmicky with its third dimension and analog movement and all sorts of different jumps

super mario bros. was a true platformer because of the simplicity of gameplay. all i had to focus on was running left, running right, jumping, and shooting fireballs

I've played some hours of Galaxy 2 and 3D Land today, and both are fantastic for different reasons, but I'm still siding with Galaxy 2, the scope of the game is huge and it simply blows your mind all the time.

Doesn't matter if the control is intuitive. Which it totally is for Galaxy.

Best since Mario 64? That's tough...the Galaxies were really, really good.

Best handheld Mario? Definitely, yes. And probably of all time. It really is absolutely perfect for limited amounts of time. Levels are varied, fun, and the perfect size for either running through them or taking your time and looking in all the nooks and crannies for those star coins.

Totally agree with OP. Mario 3D Land is fucking awesome and the best game since Mario 64.

Galaxy games are awesome too but 3D land reminds me most of old mario...something which it does better than Mario 64.

It's actually the best mario game since Yoshi's Island...

The fact SM3DL is the first 3D Mario game that can function without a health bar and melee attacks is certainly something that should receive much more praise than it gets. It's a testament to the improvement of the controls over previous 3D Mario games IMO.

How...just how is this possible? What redeeming qualities does this game have? I'm guessing there's already been a thread loathing sunshine's existence. I might need to look it up.

Being fun and actually having exploration, not a stream lined level design as SM3DL. Please Nintendo don't mix 2D gameplay with 3D, just don't do it.

I think that has more to do with the permanent power ups than the controls, I never felt like I had as much control in 3D Land due to 8-way movement. But permanent power ups is something 3D Mario should stick with.

I would love to see a home console Mario that carries over some of these philosophies.

Sunshine really isn't a bad game. The worst thing about it is the blue coin hunt (which does suck) and painful cut scenes, other than that the rest of the game is amazing. I like the unified island theme, the more open and complex levels, the music, and I even liked the FLUDD mechanics, including hover. Plus the game controls so damn perfectly. It's definitely the black sheep of the 3D Mario's and it gets hate for that, but it's certainly not the bad game you're making it out to be.

the more open and complex levels,

Being fun and actually having exploration

Have you played Sunshine recently? Aside from the third Shine, which even has some specific dialogue regarding it, each shine is a linear objective without giving the player any chance for exploration or doing things in their own order.

Although each world is a large open area like in Mario 64, each time you enter in it, there's only one shine available (aside from some rare secret shines, but even then, there's only one at most per stage that actually requires exploration, with the other one being just a tweaked version of another objective), unlike the stars in 64, so you pretty much have a linear route, with the open stage only being around for the blue coins hunt.

Yeah there is only one shine, but really all the game does is show you where you have to go at the beginning of each level. Finding out how to get there is your own problem. It's not like in 3D Land or Galaxy where there you just follow the level to its inevitable conclusion. There is often a best path, but if you want to find another way there is usually a way to do it.

Then why isn't this thread 30 pages long ? :/

Like I said previously, this game is just weirdly ignored/forgotten.

What the fuck, since when was thread length a quantifier of anything? You're acting as if the game is some niche third party title, it isn't. It's regularly still sold in bundles, and is usually top of the 3DS's shelf in retail.

It's fun, but due to being a single player game only it will never be as good as Super Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World, or New Super Mario Brothers Wii. (Haven't played NSMB U).

That is one of the things I liked more in M64.

Aww no reason to be like that.
I haven't, but it's just that the 3DS XL's hardware is identical to the 3DS's.

But there has been a recent firmware update that did make some games run better now that I think of it, so maybe that's what you're seeing?
Possible, I suppose.

But I'd raise issue with your assertion that the 3DS and 3DS XL have the same hardware. They obviously don't, given that they use different sized screens. Who can say where the differences end?

It's worth pointing out that even in the same line of devices hardware capability/details can differ. The best example is the PSX, where the later models actually rendered the graphics differently (shading, polygons) than the early models. But the same can be said for pretty much every console from Gameboy to Xbox and beyond.

So it gets "amazing" after halfway through?

Because I just got this, and this thread was the final push. I always heard about how amazing it "gets". Traded Mario Kart 7, so no big loss as I really didn't care for it

basically the game repeats the same levels but with some challenge.

and then if you want to get the final level you have to play the entire game (baby mode + easy mode) twice.

Well, I suppose it depends on your expectations, your tastes... Because I really disliked this game. Mario 64 is one of my favorite game ever, if not THE one. Mario 3D Land is such an annoying game, boring, no challenge, never, no exploration, nothing to do... To me, it's the worst Mario game ever. :/

Nothing to do?

I mean, except the 3 star coins per stage, there is nothing special to do, to "explore". In Mario 64 there is places to visit, to discover, in Sunshine and Galaxy too, in 3D Land no, and for me a 3D mario needs it, without it I feel... A lack of something. ^^"

Mario 3D Land is like a 2D Mario, but in 3D, so I was dissapointed, it wasn't what I excpected.

1. Calm down, good sir.
2. I just think that the "replies" and "views" numbers are a pretty good indication of a game's popularity. Particularly on a large and very active forum like NeoGAF.

Galaxy OT : 14,128 replies - 973,903 views
Galaxy 2 OT : 9,069 replies - 622,519 views
3D Land OT : 4,384 replies - 288,231 views

The best and most ambitious portable Mario in history deserves more love and attention, IMO.

I don't think you can extrapolate like that. Also the console Mario games will always be the trend setters and thus bigger (except NSMB).

Galaxy OT : 150 pages in 23 days.
Galaxy 2 OT : 150 pages in 27 days.
3D Land OT : Well, only 88 pages... after 18 months.

That's because inbetween Galaxy 2 and 3D land's releases, NeoGAF started a policy of moving official threads to community after 1 month.

They're really, really not.

This is a joke thread right?

3D Land is an alright game, but its lacking content and overall the levels feel very sparse because they need to be large just so the 3D works alright.
