Fuck it, haven't bought a game from GOG in a while. Picked up Hotline Miami.

Now I need to actually play the 41 games I have acquired there.

I gave the game a second chance. I went with a walkthrough at first to see what I'm supposed to be doing at the start. Once I obtained the Holy Grail which enables you to warp to all save points this game became pretty fun and playable.

They should have given you this at the start. There is so many dead ends you can end up in with no way to backtrack.
 
yeah, never played this. screens are all static formations. will have to work harder than just screenshots to figure this one out, might even have to type some stuff into youtube.

They are wargames. Somewhat different takes on the genre, in some ways, but wargames. Total War's battles are sort of an RTS/wargame hybrid system, but traditional wargames are turn-based. It is possible to make a real-time wargame (Sid Meier's Gettysburg! and sequels, for instance), but most are not. it's a very complex genre. Takes a while to learn wargames, that's for sure.

But anyway, cool. I was always interested in these Interactive Magic wargames (and yes, they are turnbased, of course), but never actually got them. I'll definitely pick this up, probably when it's on sale sometime, but I'll get it for sure.

It's really good, actually. Plenty challenging, and the writing's fairly decent, too.

Although the ending kinda sucks.
You meet and fight the devil the prologue talked about, fighting alongside his sister to stop him from destroying the world. Of course, her power isn't quite enough to stop him, and you're a mere mortal so you can't stop him yourself... and while your combined powers are definitely doing damage to him, he basically pulls out all the stops and attempts to kill you both with one final powerful attack. Cue a giant (whom you met earlier in the adventure) steps on him with his foot, apologizing for being late to the party. Roll credits. No dénouement at all, that's it

This wouldn't be so bad if
you hadn't had your parrot friend/father get shot and killed immediately before this boss fight. Some kind of mourning for your fallen friend after the journey is concluded would be in order, I'd think, but nope. Heck, even some kind of punishment for the devil character (beyond being flattened by a giant foot), but that plotline ends just as abruptly. The Good End implies that you continue your adventures because your foster grandmother has been kidnapped by ninjas, but doesn't attempt to tie into the plot at all
. It's really disappointing.

For anyone who bought the Topware Interactive Groupee Bundle a couple of weeks ago, your keys will expire on May 14th... You need to activate them now. Some people have said that you can contact customer service and get them reactivated, I wouldn't rely on that though.

Many GOG reviews are knee-jerk reactions when something doesn't work automatically. If the game freezes once they go to the game card and pound the keyboard angrily to give a one-star review.
 
Subwar was one of my first cd games. I have fuzzy memories of it but I've confused it with Archimedean Dynasty in more recent times. I remember it being harder than the cold steel of a submarine.

Also, 'the great battles:ce' looks amazing
Edit: one of the GOG.com reviews said it was an adaptation of a board game with Rock Paper Scissors mechanics.

TBF, GOG generally prides itself on compatibility, otherwise why buy the game again at all, especially when a lot of people like myself still own the original discs to begin with. It's like selling you a car only to ship you the parts and an instruction manual.

This is a fantastic sale, unless you already own everything on sale. Unfortunately they didn't include their recent releases, Strike Commander, Magic Carpet 2, Clive Barker’s Undying, and Syndicate Wars.
 
I have all of the EA titles other than Bioforge and the MoH warchest. Debating on picking those up with this sale. Not really my type of games but may still grab them for completionist sake.
 
I bought the ultima games and oh man, Ultima 1 was something to play. That game is dated as hell but it's interesting.
 
Man, I feel dumb.

I bought Ultimate Body Blows because I'm a sucker for old fighters and I had never experienced Amiga gaming. Well, this wasn't a good start :P The game is awful and almost unplayable. How come it seems to be well liked among reviewers/enthusiasts? Controls are horrible, gameplay is horrible, AI is horrible. I just wasted $6, I could have bought Street Fighter Alpha 2 (which is one of my favorite 2D fighters of all time, wouldn't mind having it on PC now that I think about it). I was hoping for a mediocre Street Fighter clone, no such luck. I just don't see myself getting any enjoyment from this and I doubt I'll ever play it again.

Sorry, just wanted to vent :P
 
I just have to say, I can't believe I never played Alpha Centauri before today.
AMAZING!!

Also, I'm playing on a netbook and had to add this line to get the game to open...

Considering cleaning house on that sale. How relevant is it to get, say, BOTH Dungeon Keepers, and is there anything to keep in mind with Wing Commander IE can I get a 360 controller to emulate a flight stick well enough?
 
I've heard that GOG's version of Dungeon Keeper is gimped or "incomplete" somehow. I've checked reviews and it sounds like they removed some maps or features?

I use an old Microsoft Sidewinder, I didn't even think to try hooking up my 360 gamepad!

Wing Commander, baby. Love it.

never trust the reviews on GOG

they are written by people gone mad on nostalgia, they are never reviewing the actual game but their memories of it

99% of the reviews on GOG are pure shit

I think it was just a few bonus maps from one of the expansions? Hardly anything to be concerned about imo (at least I didn't make any mental note concerning them), there's dozens of hours of gameplay in the main games, more than enough earn the few bucks they cost.
 
Guys. Dungeon Keeper 2 or Populous: The Beginning?
I can't make up my mind. Closest I've played to Populous is Black and White. I also reallly dig management games, hence my curiosity regarding Dungeon Keeper.
The Crusader games look great too as does Alpha Centauri (but I'm not sure about the turn based'ness of it and I have never played a game like that before)

While I'm still wondering if getting both is worth it, namely if they're distinct enough experiences, I also need to see how hard it is to even install from CD these days as I DO have the disc around, but much like other games of its vintage it could be worth buying just to avoid the problems.

Though at this rate I'm thinking of just getting Wing Commander plus Medal of Honor, already got the first Crusader but have yet to play it significantly so I don't see much reason to grab, and I'm mainly just missing Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Magic Carpet, and Starflight. Unless you want to count Lands of Lore 3, but it sounds like no one does.

I would like to have Magic Carpet, but I know I wouldn't play it. I used to love the game but for some reason controlling it now for me is a real problem (makes me nauseous a bit).

This is so true. Learned this the hard way on a couple of games (I really knew better in the back of my mind, but still... lesson learned)

yeah, if you're going to go off reviews the "most helpful" review is probably more useful overall. remember, the people buying games on gog are far more likely, than on steam, people who actually liked that game back in the day, and are then more likely to give more positive reviews. personally I never give star ratings to games I don't buy or don't care about on there, not sure even if you can.
 
I'ma go with Crusader No Remorse, it looks amazingly fun. Should I just put the sequel in my cart while I'm at it? Figuring Dungeon Keeper 2 goes in as well.

Unless someone wants to sell me on Populous ;)

they're distinct enough.
small unit cap(with experience and leveling system) vs large (with only a few distinct units),
open world in 3D vs dungeon very fixed on a 2d grid
unit control is totally different.

populous has a focus on spells, a single hero unit and reaching strategic objectives, DK 2 is map control and designing and holding your heavily defended base (spells are mostly minor, or of very limited use)

If you're really going to play it, get all four Wing Commander games. The first game only hints at the ridiculously awesome story stuff that would follow.

Really, WC1 to WC2 is one of the best sequel transitions ever, and it only came out a year later.

I've never played Populous but Dungeon Keeper 2 is a great game, wonderfully entertaining.
