Super Mario 3D Land is the best Mario game since Mario 64.

I don't think 3D Land is the best game since 64, but this thread did inspire me to pick the game up again for the first time in a year or so.

I think Sunshine is great and all, but the game has some shitty levels and the camera has to be one of the worst in a Nintendo game, it just actively acted against the player. Personally though, I feel the level-design is the weakest of the 3D games, but I'll agree that I still think it's underrated. FLUDD gets too much shit, I had a ton of fun screwing around with that.

Well the Hotel level certainly was tedious in just about its entirety. But then you have Noki Bay and all is right again (
aside from cleaning that dreadful Eel's teeth
). Sunshine probably has some of the highest points but it definitely has the lowest points in 3D Mario. I mean it's not my favourite either, but it gets far too much stick.

I haven't played Sunshine in years but I can't remember a time where the camera gave me major problems - maaaybe a couple of levels but the other 3D games aren't free from problematic cameras from time to time. I'm pretty OCD about full camera control in 3D Marios, so I'd even say I probably liked Sunshine's solution the best :p

FLUDD is awesome, and the way water is such a key mechanical and visual component of the game (play it on a hot day, you'll want to jump into the screen) is genius.

But for a core Mario game, it's disappointingly repetitive and noticably rushed, imo. Living up to Mario 64 was no easy task, maybe even impossible, and it just didn't cut it. 3D Land and the Galaxies are a massive improvement, though.

IMO 3D Land would have been much better if the first half of the game wasn't so incredibly easy in its attempt to avoid scaring away people who found 3D games difficult.

I think the difficulty and level design should have ramped up after the first 2 worlds. If it had the design and challenge of the real second half of the game in the first half, it would not feel like a bit of a slog to get to the good stuff.

Otherwise though 3D Land deserves the praise it receives for balancing the ideas of a 2D and 3D Mario game.

I loved 3D Land and the Galaxy games, i consider all 3 great. No love for 64 or Sunshine, the more open world Mario games just dont do it for me, prefer straight to the point levels akin to the ones in 2D Mario games.

But one thing that bugged me about the game, is not even the actual game, its the 3DS "analog" thingy, do not get me wrong its better than the PSP one, but i still cannot fully get use to it, its what keeps the game from being better than Galaxy 1 and 2, which i enjoyed more.

Ehhhhh :p

I mean, I love the visual side, especially the gorgeous outdoor sunset scenery, but it all goes down hill when you actually get in. The music is terrible too.

Well I'll admit that I mostly liked it because of the visuals, but I also liked the concept in general, with the ghosts and the casino and all that. There certainly wasn't much platforming though, so I get why people disliked it.

I guess I just really want a Super Mario Adventure game, I'd kill for that. :p

In some ways Luigi's Mansion scratches that itch, doesn't it.

With SM3DL Nintendo created a new kind of Mario game and I think it deserves to be re-visited more. A SMG2-style sequel would be glorious. Heck, I would take even a big DLC expansion.
Yeah I totally agree, I would love to see some of the elements of 3D land incorporated into a full-on 3D home console game.

I'm rolling with Galaxy series on this one. 3D land is fun, but I dont like it when the world maps dont really have specific themes. Just seemed a little too abstract to have stages of several themes or even nondescript themes in one world.

i thought it was one of the worst Mario games i've ever played. i dont recall finishing it.

a chore to play, with its 3d levels being sooooooo boring!

I will have to side with Galaxy on this. The controls for 3D Land are hot garbage compared to the other games in the series. Hell galaxy waggle feels more responsive than this game(hyperbole maybe). I have never been this frustrated with controls from a Mario game before.

Well, like most everyone else, I'm siding with Galaxy as the "latest & greatest". In fact I already said that once in this thread. Butttttt, all this discussion prompted me to go back and play 3D Land and i have to admit there are some brilliant and FUN stages. No one would ever mistake this game for being challenging, but the use of 3D is just something to behold. You know something is good when it makes you smile as you play.
