Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

Awww yiss.

You're a Prime member, right? I'm not, and I'm okay waiting a couple of days. I'm still jealous you're getting it at launch though!

People are tweeting that your Hero gets to manually allocate stat points when you level up. I've never been so happy in my life.

Dammit.

Allocating stat points (but I'm oddly okay with distributing points for skills like in EO) is probably the worst part of RPGs for me. At least in Soul Hackers, I got some help from GAF and the spread was rather straightforward.

In every recent Megaten game you just pick if you want to do physical or magical damage and dump into that; I don't know why this one would be different...

Pretty much. Once the game comes out in Japan we'll hear about optimal stat distributions.

Also, in the Q&A thread I posted demo impressions from the Atlus event:

Impressions:

Tweets are coming in from the play session

Apparently there is death, death everywhere
It has not been made easier.
Charon apparently won't put it on your tab when you resurrect, you pay up or pass on.
e: Difficulty to escape from battles, general sense of hopelessness

ee: More choice tweets.
"Issachar lololol"
"lololol death spree"
"can't escape! (despair)"
"Who said this game would be easy?!"
"Crap, I need to save frequently"
"Need to save a lot, holy crap. Finally cleared Naraku. Navarre is creepy lol"
"lololololol died again lolololol"

More info!
"Turning up the 3D effect to max, the depth is crazy"
"Name input is via touch"
"First town doesn't let you roam freely, you move via ADV"
"Movies are also in 3D"
"Lower screen is like the screen of the gauntlet"

"Unlike SJ, you can freely allocate parameters when leveling up. You get 5 points"
"Only 2 save slots"
"I was wearing headphones while playing, and the bass was amazing. The music was perfect. The music that played in the Ueno underground center was totally to my liking, the tracks were all entirely dark/gloomy and very Megaten!"

Worth a new thread?

Yeah, games like SH where the main only does physical damage are pretty much done.

I'm not sure about how the main's magic casting ability works though.

I wound up with an Agi build in SJ, and it was a godsend. Yes, I'd like to preempt bosses when I'm near death.

Story stuff that's been tweeted (it appears this is all from the first hour or so of the game, so nothing huge):
The game begins with a dream sequence where the player meets Jonathan and Walter... then the hero meets a girl who asks if he can revive her. After that the MC wakes up. I guess the title is finally relevant again.

This bit seems a bit more spoilerly, but it's still something that comes up early. I probably wouldn't read it if I were you.
The story of Mikado's founding:
Once upon a time, Kegare-bito (basically translates to Impure Person?) started coming from underground and summoning demons. The Angels retaliated by sealing the Kegare-bito underground and built Mikado over it.

Speculation: It sounds like the Kegare-bito were probably people living in fallout shelters?

Interesting. "Kegare" or "Defilement" was a concept in Persona 2, and it was basically an energy that allowed one to warp reality. It was a very toxic energy. Hmmm.

for the record, it's an alternate pronunciation of 穢人 (although it looks like they write it as ケガレビト) so i'm not sure it's meant to tie into P2's concept of kegare. it seems to just be a generic "these were gross bad people who did gross bad things like bring demons here"

What do they mean by "you move by ADV" ?

It means you pick options off a menu instead of moving around.

Another tweet mentioned that
when the Gauntlets come on, they say "User Authentication" which the people of Mikado believe to be magic words. I'm not sure if this means they think Japanese text is some form of magic rune or if they think the term itself is magic.

Her and the dude with the weird face and the armor and
the sword of Masakados
have the best designs.

Walter?

So why don't these games let you select your avatar's sex?

From the Q&A session:
One fan asked about Shin Megami Tensei lead roles always being male characters and if there’s a chance we could be seeing a female lead in the future. The possibility of a future female lead wasn’t ruled out, although different development team members seemed to have different feeling towards the idea. Some welcomed the possibility of there being a choice of gender, while others felt that Shin Megami Tensei games are better suited to male leads.

So how are the Tensei games different from Personas? Are they more dungeon focused? Would they not be recommended for someone that enjoys more narrative-focused RPG's?

Yes more dungeon focused, but the dungeons have more variety, and often have characters to meet and more places to explore. The stories are great, but much less narrative compared to Persona games (mostly due to the social links).

From what I've seen SMT IV seems to have more focus on narrative this time around, so it might be perfect for you. Although that's just my prediction of course. :)

So it's just "boys rule girls drool"?
Granted, I haven't played any of the main games or anything, but in all of the spinoffs I've played (only a few), I don't see why the sex of the character would have to be male.

I mean, yeah in Persona, you'd have to change a lot of the social links and whatnot, but in something like Devil Survivor Overclocked or Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, I don't really see what difference it would've made.
I guess some extra work some new portraits/sprites/models, but in Devil Summoner Soul Hacker, all they had to do was change "him' to "her", and stuff like that.
