No.

Profitable in business sense was that its generating profit

Xbox was always meant to be negative and expected

Xbox 360 was supposed to be profitable from the start but then RROD happened, yields were low and they wrote off a billion to cover warranties.

So Microsoft receded further to ensure profitability. This meant if it wasn't AAA and a guaranteed hit, they weren't touching it. This really hurts late gen because of the lead time on projects.

That's why Rare disappeared, their midrange games disappeared, everything. Now we are going into a new gen and Microsoft will once again be aiming for profitability out of the gate... Barring a ridiculous turn of events, Durango should have far more first party software across the generation - look at how many releases they had for original Xbox. Even first years of 360 they had several 1st party titles by third party devs, but in the back half they announced... Um... Ryse and I think that's it (outside of gears sequels) - no risks

This is why you shouldn't look back to the last 2 gens for much clarity... They haven't been what I'd consider to be normal generations

Hope so.

It's too bad Destiny isn't coming out this year. It's a sound business decision, but it would have been the cherry on top of what is likely going to be an amazing line-up of games this holiday.

So what? Some people planning to buy both consoles and are excited about it.

I wish I could, but a grand is just too rich for my blood. I'll probably buy the other console 2-3 years down the road from now when it has a good exclusives library.

Buying both consoles will cost a lot of money indeed. And you need to buy some games too. 0_o

Gaming is STILL my most favorite hobby and I have the money. I love to be a early adopter A.K.A beta tester, lol.

But waiting (what you will do) until there are more great games can also be a smart decision.

I hope the launch line-up of the next Xbox is great. I need some Rare magic.

I will buy both, but, why not to focus on the topic?

That member you quoted was ontopic. He said nothing inappropriate imo.

For sure. For me I have to get one of the new consoles because I love playing the newest stuff. I really like the graphical leaps (not to the point where I need every game to be maxed out like a PC gamer) that new consoles bring, but I also just love how the slate is almost wiped completely clean. New IP's, franchises reborn, old franchises remade (like CoD this generation); just a lot to love. Gaming is still my favorite hobby too, and I hope that stays for as long as it can.

So are you going to wait in line twice this holiday, only once, or not at all?

Does anyone think EA might be developing 'Fight Night Round 5' for launch?, Round 3 was a great launch game and a fantastic showcase of the capabilities of the 360 and i'd love the same for next gen.

Yeah, no announced game has me as excited as Destiny. I'm a huge Bungie fan and after 10 years of great Halo games I'm ready to see what else they have in store. I love the idea of a persistent world I can hop in whenever I want and play co-op with my friends at any time. That idea combined with Bungie's emphasis on great gameplay over every thing else will be an awesome experience I'm sure.

If there is one series they should revive for this, it should be a Mechwarrior game.

Microsoft still owns the license right?

Give us a real game for the series.

The Online game is fine, but I want a next-gen single player game.

SpikeTV is not re-airing the event in prime time. I think thats a bad idea on their part but hopefully it means it won't be like the 2005 reveal with singing acts&celebs.

Assassin's Creed 4
FIFA 14
Madden 25
Watch_Dogs
Battlefield
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Ryse?
Need for speed?

What launch games am I missing besides speculative MS stuff?

Well damn it. This is going to sound kinda dumb but I'm really planing on getting a nextbox at launch and I hope I can convince some publishers to send me some of those next gens versions instead of the current gen ones planned (I'm the EiC of a gaming site on my country)

I'm a cheap fucker. I know ):

Yeah, pretty excited times. I also love unboxing new consoles. And the fresh smell, delicious! Haha!
I'm a console only gamer, the visuals new consoles can produce are good enough for me.

I, just like you, really don't need a high-end gaming PC to be satisfied.
Yes, I will be in line twice if all goes well (maybe during a midnight launch here in the Netherlands).

How many games are you planning to buy on day one?

Can silver members access VOD?

Yes. More than likely they will be using the Xbox Live Event Player to stream this, which is available to everyone I believe (not limited to Gold). A few minutes after the event, they upload the VOD so you can watch it whenever you want.

They've used this for a lot of things lately. CoD tournament, Golden Gods concert this past weekend, Grammys, Presidential debates, Mars rover landing, etc...

Though, it likely will be up on the GTTV or Spike apps after as well, but that will require Gold.

Awesome!

I really am not sure yet. I could see myself getting anywhere from 3 to 5, depending on how good the Sony and Microsoft exclusives turn out to be. Some stuff like Watch_Dogs is a lock for sure. I've known I want to play that game since it debuted. CoD: Ghosts could be cool because it sounds new from the stuff we know. AC IV is a toss up because I love the AC games but I hated AC III.

I envy the fun you're going to have in line though. I know some people don't like waiting for stuff anymore, but to me that's one of the specialist times in gaming. You're on the edge of getting that next big thing that'll be in your room, under the TV for the next half-decade or so. Very exciting!

I'm thinking they'll host a conference in October as well. They used to in the early days of the 360 but they stopped.

X13 would be cool.

Cool, thanks. So it should be up by the time I'm off work.

Guys, I can't make a thread, but there's speculation that the Next Xbox will even get Windows 8.1 (Blue) features.

Microsoft insider Paul Thurrott previously claimed that the operating system for the next Xbox (aka Xbox 720) will be based on Windows 8. He took it a step further Tuesday by stating that the next-gen console will come with the enhancements currently planned for the Windows 8.1 update, code-named "Blue."

"Blue" is an update for both Windows 8 and Windows RT that is based on customer feedback of the new operating system since it was released last fall according to Microsoft executive Tami Reller. This is rumored to include the return of the Start button but it is what Thurrott notes about the next Xbox that should perk up gamer's ears.

When Reller says "new device types," she is not just referring to new tablets for Windows 8 but also to the next Xbox according to the tech expert. "I suspect some of the updates in that release are designed for that console," he says.

The software and console maker is attempting to turn its entire suite of products for the PC, tablets, smartphones and consoles into one large ecosystem. Keeping these devices on the same relative platform will ensure cross-compatibility which is something that was introduced with the Xbox 360 via apps like SmartGlass.
From the Examiner

I think this is even more evidence that this will basically be (and will be marketed as) a closed PC/htpc with 8. If it was just going to be converted into a typical console OS, why would it need that update?

I hope that if the Nextbox gets the Metro UI, that they actually let us customize it. Because right now there are only 9 icons on the screen, none of which you can actually customize or change.

$500 console
- $99 Kinect 2.0
- $150 windows 8 License fee
= $250 Game hardware

RT

Disable desktop

Replace windows marketplace with Xbox marketplace, add new application classes

Make a better file management system

Voila

Would also make the system way more vulnerable unless it's heavily closed off. I suspected the kernel is in there and they may unify the looks, but nothing more.

Essentially... I assume they will run windows in a virtual machine like the games (which has been rumored)

So... The Xbox kernel (which would be a stripped windows kernel) and windows kernel would be running as separate entities

Could be wrong...

Watch Dogs is my most anticipated next-gen game from the moment I saw that gameplay demo that came out of nowhere! That game looks so cool.
People can say what they want about Ubisoft but they always have the balls to be well represented at a new console launch.

Black Ops 1 was the last CoD I bought, I was bored of this franchise (and FPS in general).
Knowing CoD: Ghosts runs on a next-gen engine makes me a little excited again, can't wait to see more of it at he Xbox event.

I know what games I'm going to buy after E3, for sure. Buying a new console is always a magic moment. It will be worth the wait. :)

Yeah actually Blue itself will feature extra customization. Hopefully that is kept in NextBox.

I bet the Guide button will work similar to Windows button in Windows 8: tapping the Guide brings up the time and the menu (Windows + C in windows 8), holding Guide takes you to the home screen without closing any of your apps (Start button in windows 8) with Guide + LT or Guide + RT functioning as an ALT-TAB type functions to switch between apps.

I remain adamant that it will not run Windows 8. It will be based on the same kernel, sure, and it might even implement a version of Windows Runtime (although that's a stretch), but that's as far as it'll go.

Windows Metro is hella closed off as Windows Phone 7 & 8, it's hard to the bones softhack it as to the point only unlocked phone are those made through some hardware exploit.

That's basically what I just said. WP8 shares the kernel and the look, that's it - this I suspect is happening. The nextbox running Windows Blue is just crazy.

What if it does?

What if every Xbox sold was a full blown PC?

What if it ran regular windows instead of RT?
