I remain adamant that it will not run Windows 8. It will be based on the same kernel, sure, and it might even implement a version of Windows Runtime (although that's a stretch), but that's as far as it'll go.

I could be wrong, but you do realize RT is an ARM compiled Win 8, not a completely different os.

What if it does?

What if every Xbox sold was a full blown PC?

Hell freezes over ;)
I think that would harm the Xbox brand. Exclusives do not mean that much anymore, why get the nextbox if I have a PC or get a better system and still play the games... etc.

Indy/Arcade games can still be made available to both marketplaces without that.

What if it ran regular windows instead of RT?

Paul Thurrot said that the Xbox would be running Windows 8 Core. I don't know what that means; if that means RT or non-ultimate/professional Windows 8.

Microsoft is the only company in the world that can do this that is crazy enough to do this.

Not good hardware wise utilization, would consume much more than it should.
To bootstrap a full blown OS to then run a game is a waste of hardware power as a bitch, it (th OS) need to be coded to switch backend as low as a kind of service that the game make calls and have the hardware to its please. No wonder why people were calling 4gb reserved to the Next Xbox OS as they probably assumed it would really have a full Windows 8.x in it.

I can't see it happening, but really would like to see the full Windows 8.x Core (without any Desktop's kernel) on Next Xbox, just for the sake of Indie game making.

Not if you look at it like windows and games run separately of each other and never at the same time

It's just the basic version of windows 8

It could be a heavily toned down Windows 8 with a bunch of apps that enable common PC functionality (emails, IM, word processing, web browsing, ability to install apps, etc ), making it functionally a PC to most of the market.

I think that they could work it out such that features that consumers wouldn't need on an Xbox that are available in 8 aren't around to bloat up the OS, I don't know about the tech but I'm sure that they could optimize it specifically for that hardware/ the chose that hardware with it in mind.

ya I saw that, it would be crazy if that's what Thurrott was referring to

If there is one series they should revive for this, it should be a Mechwarrior game.

Microsoft still owns the license right?

Give us a real game for the series.

The Online game is fine, but I want a next-gen single player game.

If the rumours are true thats what respawn entertainment game is (not mechwarrior ip though), giant mech battles online sooter and rumoured to be nextbox exclusive

Watch Dogs is my most anticipated next-gen game from the moment I saw that gameplay demo that came out of nowhere! That game looks so cool.
People can say what they want about Ubisoft but they always have the balls to be well represented at a new console launch.

Black Ops 1 was the last CoD I bought, I was bored of this franchise (and FPS in general).
Knowing CoD: Ghosts runs on a next-gen engine makes me a little excited again, can't wait to see more of it at he Xbox event.

I know what games I'm going to buy after E3, for sure. Buying a new console is always a magic moment. It will be worth the wait. :)

Yeah, I'm super psyched! Watch_Dogs just looked so cool since they first showed it off. I was in as soon as I saw that it was basically an open-world game with a lot of cool tech stuff.

I haven't enjoyed CoD since BO either (I've played friends' copies) and it really hasn't done much for me since then. A lot of the movement stuff they talked about though sounded really cool, and if it's a new-engine then I'll be very excited.

they would need 12 gb ram to compete with PS4, would be less effective hardware due to many processes and it would take up lots of disk-space and as people install apps they would affect system performance as well. Not to forget that most people would prefer to buy a more powerful PC and use Steam instead of windows apps if they wanted to do PC gaming PROPER.

I don't believe they're trying to compete with PS4 in this way.

I'm not saying that it's going to try to compete with a Gaming PC, literally, or that it will play PC games. I believe that it will only play Xbox/ Win 8 store games. I'm saying that it will have PC-like features and apps, and play Xbox games + do HTPC stuff, so they will market it as a living room PC (instead of a console).

It will probably be a living-room PC-lite, of sorts, mass marketed to the common consumer who doesn't know about steam and isn't interested in PC games or PC hardware. It won't have the Desktop opened up or anything like that.

Anybody remember the rumors about Durango hardware/firmware being designed specifically for multi-tasking? This is probably why. Switch back and forth between multiple apps and games.

What separates Microsoft from other companies that may try to do this, is that they have the computer software and video game resources to make it succeed. Nobody else both has a gaming brand as big as Xbox and an software brand as big as Windows. They have everything in place. Plus they've been building relationships with entertainment companies.

Of course they won't. If you ask every single consumer that bought a PS3/360 how much memory was in it, I bet you 99.99 percent of them couldn't tell you. They don't care. Content sells consoles. Agreed about the gaming PC angle. They won't sell it as a gaming PC-console, but I bet they will make a big deal about your Win 8s being playable on your Xbox, and the ability to earn achievements whether you're on your PC, your Xbox, or your Windows phone. The tie-ins to Win 8 are a huge advantage for them. If they choose to exploit it.

I just saw a commercial for this on Conan.

My sister asked me about the new Xbox today. The only reason she got a 360 was because I upgraded to a Slim and gave her family my old Elite. Now it's their Minecraft/Amazon/Netflix box. Was amused that someone as casual as her knew there was something new coming.

Also, was the commercial for the Xbox reveal or the CoD reveal at the Xbox reveal? I know Activision is running ads for their reveal now. That CoD relationship is really huge for MS.

Imagine Xbox as a Service, where every game made for Xbox also run on any Windows PC. Imagine the revenue for MS. I think this is the ultimate goal. Pure speculation, btw. But with anything-as-a-service is being worked on almost every MS' software/platform, I can see they're thinking about it.

I think renaming Zune Music to Xbox Music is a good indicator of their future goals.

If every game made for next Xbox can run on any Windows PC I'm not interested on next Xbox. I would love WinRT apps/games compatibility, but not for full games.

so why should i buy an xbox then ?

Sorry, I just caught the end of it but it was basically the opening from the Xbox.com site with a voice over. Still pretty crazy.

"The next generation of Xbox revealed! Tune in May 21st on Spike TV, Xbox Live, or Xbox.com"

Not word for word but something to that effect. No gameplay or anything about CoD but I only caught maybe ten seconds.

Exactly, why a Xbox? a console with low specs compared to PC, if I can play all those games in a better hardware. I do not want.

Xbox the hardware will be like Surface, just another device in the Windows ecosystem. You will buy the device for the integration with Kinect and other device.

exactly 2.0: they would also have to stop charging for live seeing as you can do what live does for free on a PC.

MS will find a way to charge for their service. I don't know how. The $299 Nextbox with subscription is a start. You get their service across Windows ecosystem if you pay for Live subscription

Surface RT don't have support for Win32, Surface Pro don't have Move engines or 1.2TF GPU, or even HSA support.

The software (Windows 8 in this case) don't make compatibility with magic.

I find this part interesting. I can only imagine what was involved in securing the Respawn exclusive (a huge grab) - and managing to keep good relations with Activision/COD simultaneously.

You don't have to, but they'll charge you a subscription for playing on PC, a bit higher than the Live Gold subscription on Xbox.

I also think that's their ultimate goal and the reason why you'll never see them drop the Live subscription entirely, but I believe it's too early for that transition. In fact, I believe they talked about that in the past, making their platform completely hardware-agnostic and accessible from any device you may have.

I think we will actually get third-party reveals. Sony had a good showing but I already knew of the existence of Destiny, Diablo, Watch_Dogs...

yeah,
Valve do not have to fear MS in any way if they try to compete with a better service that is free and has much more games and much better prices and is backwards compatible and can run on better hardware than Durango

I hope Ubisoft shows off multiplayer Watch_Dogs. What better console to demonstrate multiplayer on than the one from the company synonymous with online play.

Nah, I hope they dont show anything we've already seen and keep the multiplatform stuff to a minimum at their reveal. E3 is for that kind of stuff

I do think CoD is in the show (opening it?). they released the cover but nothing else? in two weeks (Xbox 3 announcement) is the closest game event.

If this happened then the games would be pirated beyond belief.

Regardless, the rumoured unified architecture, ESRAM, likely custom GPU, sound block, move engines, etc, wold mean that any game would have to be fully ported to run on a Windows PC.

The original Xbox was a PC with unified memory too, we never did see people running those games on Windows though. Even now, emulation is almost non-existent.

I think if Xbox Live had crossplay with PC, Valve would be in trouble even with a subscription fee

and on top of that dice (EA) has made comments leading one to believe they have something going with ms too (we cant speak about next gen, what's a PS4 lol? Etc). heck i wouldn't be surprised if "BF4, 5 minutes first exclusive console footage" or something is there too.

I dunno yesterdays EA investor call made it sound like they will be having their next-gen blow-out at E3. So they're probably just holding on to next-gen versions until then.
