Shin Megami Tensei IV (3DS) coming to NA retail/eShop Summer 2013 (July 16)

The moon-phase system did play a role in the games, what with demon disposition and with fusion.

The removal of the mechanic is odd, but perhaps not unwarranted. Apparently time travel is a big thing in this game. With that mind, the moon phase model just wouldn't work since you aren't playing in a linear time progression anymore.

The moon-phase system was extremely archaic and made no sense in most of the Megami Tensei games. Nocturne only managed to justify it because the Vortex World is about the size of Tokyo.

And the fusion system was never complex. Just obtuse.

Also, it's like you people have forgotten what Kanako's oldest art looked like. It was very early 90s/late 80s anime style. If anything, Masayuki Doi's art is very faithful to the style used on Shin Megami Tensei 1/2 on the SNES.

I never understood the purpose of that moon phase thing. Only difference it seemed to make is that the demons went bat shit cray during fulll moon.

A mechanic that won't be missed.

In DDS it also meant I had to walk in circles for hours before entering the store. -_-

He looks fine comparing he last iteration. Steven and Black Samurai are from past SMT titles.

So I wonder if there will be a cameo from SMT3? Demifiend maybe.

Secret boss again to ruin us all!

Bat shit crazy with criticals you mean!

These Kaneko's old arts are less clean and you didn't have direct portraits like that when people talk in SMTI, II and if... That's why Nocturne's transition was good enough, the characters in 3D looked credible.
It would be great if Doi's portraits weren't so clean and colorful because I like his style.
Perhaps "anime style" is a bad description but you know what I mean.

And regarding the moon-phase system, even if the idea wasn't great in the 1st place, it introduced some hazards in battle in addition to the possibilities in fusion.
You know, it became a part of the system.
But as fates said, perhaps it's related to the time travel and they replaced it by another (better?) system.

Those Kaneko arts were less clean simply because of the era of the art. His art got super clean (and super surreal) when he switched over to the newer style.

The moon figures heavily in mythology; many entities in SMT's compendium are related to the moon and its mystery to the ancients.

Now you understand!

I'm glad the series has moved from random encounters. Actually that gives them an excuse to make the encounters harder. And we have heard that battles are tough even if there isn't a hard mode in the beginning.

Also how many SMT games start you off completely alone?

I may fall off the SMT bandwagon in general if I keep having to hear the same voice actors in every god damn release.

It's super disconnecting going from P4G to Strange Journey and hearing the same voice actors doing the same voice. It's something that I liked about Deadly Premonition, I didn't recognize a lot of the voice actors, and they were mostly acceptable(as good as anime voice actors at least) outside of York near the end.

Since when Strange Journey had voices?

This game is gonna suck.

I'm sure it'll be good. I'm just bitter about no dual audio with Atlus. I'm sick of hearing JYB and Yuri Lowenthal.

Luckily in SMTIV you can turn off the voices, I believe.

It's if they ACT that way (course, there's DeSu, but nothing's saving that shotgun marriage between Megaten plot and that art.)

From the themes and tales of mankinds many ways of life: Megaten.

What you mean you don't like a world of sentient alien tits trying to desperately escape their hosts? Just typing that was painful.

Rejoice, you can turn off the voices. In both this and Soul Hackers.

Dunno. But there will be no Sawashiro for sure. Game already ruined for me!
So basically what you're saying is "god, I'm tired of hearing <popular English VA that's in every game>. I want to hear more of <popular Japanese VA that's in every game>."

Sawashiro is actually good though. While JYB isn't.

I think I realized a key problem with SMT IV's protagonist. As much as I like his design, he doesn't seem to have much of a will.

Hitoshura and even Soul Hackers' protagonist look like people who could really take a beating in a fight. Flynn looks just blase about everything.

Does early localization help SMT4 sales in the west?

I think long localizations diminish hype a bit so probably. And I think the first print bonus they added is a smart move. It's been doing pretty well on Amazon since they announced it. Right now it's at #38, but was actually #1 at one point, then stuck around the top 10 and then top 10 for a while. It's slipping now but it's still pretty respectable for a niche JRPG. Sales should be helped out more if the game gets good reviews/reception (which is likely).

I think it'll do well honestly.

Ahaha hitoshura? Really? He's some lanky bean pole with glowing tats. Man at first glance a wind would knock him out.

Ok now smt IV hero's build isn't exactly imposing either. At least looking like a samurai he could hold his own.

All the concept art of him shows him doing incredible feats, though.

Kind of off topic but someone uploaded all the variation's of Nocturne's overworld battle theme on Youtube (he also did the variations for the normal battle theme):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gpMqNtHRvk

Makes me want to continue my Hard playthrough of Nocturne. I stopped at Shibuya.

I hope he does the same for DDS1's battle theme variations. I also wonder if SMT IV will have similar variations. I kinda doubt it though. I'm sure it'll have a couple different normal battle themes depending on the situation like Nocturne and DDS though.

Man, I wish SMTIV would have multiple standard-battle themes. I like it when RPGs do that, like Nocturne.

Soul Hackers' protag looks like he already was in a fight before the game started, what with those bandages on his face.
