Little bit of info from the EA Origin thread. Someone hinted that EA was dropping mandatory online passes because Microsoft was going to have online-authentication. To which Crazy Buttocks posted a picture of Bill Gates. Authenticating the game once and then allowing us to sell them is fine with me, but if it requires authentication every time you play it and you cant sell it, no sale.

Isn't Sony doing this as well? Leaving online-DRM up to the publishers, I mean.

Sony still has online passes. And EA wasnt at the Sony reveal, but is rumored to be at Microsofts. Read into that anything you want until they actually say something.

No, I mean about the online-authentication thing you mention. I thought they shadily dodged a question because they plan to leave it up to the publishers as well?

As has already been commented by many...I for one am simply AMAZED at how tight the Microsoft/Xbox ship has been, leading up to this reveal.

I also believe that the actual specs will be on par with the PS4, and superior to the rumored "leaked" specs promulgated by Kotaku et. al.

Sony GAF says this isn't possible and Kotaku, VGLeaks and EDGE can't all be wrong about a rumor.

Yeah, they've been dodging that question. One would assume they know what EA wants, or is already agreed to do with Microsoft, and are deciding their plan. Or are simply waiting for MS to announce theirs. Makes it easier to say, "Well they did it, and now we have no choice."

Paradox!

Maybe they're waiting to deny it to look good at E3 or later on, but I remember them being pretty clear and vehement about the Playstation 4 being able to play used games when asked back then.

I have no doubt it will play used games. But will used games require a new pass to play? That's the part they wont answer.

I see you guys came up with something like the kaz and cerny avatars.

Brilliant.

EDIT- Oh fuck it i'm a sony fan but do arya. That's saying something because i NEVER let anyone touch arya!

The only ones who know for sure is MS, there were things missed even by VGLeaks like the RAM type and size on PS4.

From what I've seen I'm happy with the specs.

Oh I'll touch him. I'll touch him all day.

Did you do this before seeing my edit?? lol. Thanks.

You haven't been paying attention. These guys create new avatars for you whether you want one or not. One of us. One of us. One of us.

MS nda's are nothing to fuck with

yeah the Polygon article about DRM says that Microsoft is leaving it up to publishers to make the decisions about that stuff.

Also it was rumored that BF4 and Respawns game was always online.

EA just announced they are doing away with the online pass. They didn't say their games will require an online connection to work though like Simcity. Maybe the new Xbox will verify the disc so there's no need for an online pass?

I'm all open for the possibility of these rumors being true I just think it's funny that the guys pushing these rumors refused to believe that there is a possibility that the rumors are wrong.

If they don't reveal Alan Wake 2

I really hope it isnt going to be:

-Unviel system
-Discuss "unprecedented partnerships"
-Show off new TV tuner features. Some marketing guy with an MBA will get on stage and talk about how you can stream NFL games and *insert current popular tv show* right to the new xbox and use tablets and smart phones to access your favorite multimedia
-Show off generic First person shooter (COD Ghosts)
-Show off generic racing game
-Spend the next 50 minutes talking about how everything is better with Kinnect
-Show Several kinect casual games and shovelware
-Show Ryse (kinect only)

End conference

I'm expecting something similar to that which is why I won't get too excited at the moment . I'd be delighted if its much better than that list though

Then I retire gaming for a while.
who am I lying to, couldn't hold a month without any game I guess

Its only an hour long. I think we'll all be pleasantly surprised by their presentation.

GAF insiders are also playing nice by not purposely leaking the reveal.

That is some dedication.

You can pretty much take out any of the kinect game showoff as I'm pretty sure all of that will be kept for E3. We are probably going to see the new Kinect 2.0 hardware and features but I doubt we'll see any kinect game demonstrations at the reveal.

I'm assuming games need to be authenticated the first time you play it (install it) and you'd have to connect the system periodically to access your content. (To counter piracy)

That would be mandatory, online only would be up to pubs and would really not be DRM (as long as the systems DRM doesn't fail)... It would be more of a service restriction. Requiring a user to sign into a second service, or the games functionality being entirely dependent on servers.

People confuse this with sim city, which isn't really the same though to a user it would have the same requirement.

Give us a taste of everything with more at E3. Perfect.
This hour-long thing will be the modern day equivalent of the Clockwork Orange re-programming. Flashes of footage from both the NNXE and games that go for 10 seconds each, flicking between one-another for the entire hour. We'll be drinking milk in no time.

So something like Steam does to play your games offline? Something is going on since the GameStop CEO is happy about the next Xbox and EA has dropped online passes.

Anything bouncing about Rare?

Not that I have personally heard or read or anything no. I think mostly just information seeking. MS deserves a serious set of kudo's for their lockdown the last couple months. I just hope an ad agency doesn't fuck it up for them like has happened in the past. Or they don't accidentally post it online ha

A steam offline mode would actually be ok with me. If it worked.

Yeah, similar to steam but typically more friendly.

I don't really know how they'd handle used games though there is a ton of options

Because say user A buys game, installs it, goes offline.... Sells to user b and he installs.

You potentially have 2 people off one copy.

I assume maybe there'd be a cool down on installing the same game on another system (like the offline time allowance)

That's if they wanted to keep things essentially status quo.

But authentication does mean greater mobility so I am hoping we see something really neat to cover it.

Wonder how free to play will work? Will they just allow those to be played free or maybe everyone can play online? this can bee an advantage for sony if they don't figure it out. Also if ftp is free and the rest is still pay they can lose customers when they can just play the free games instead.
