From Xbox UK's Facebook.

everyone gets an original xbox leather jacket at the event.

cause it is in a tent

and cold...

India, South America and maaaybe China are lost causes when there's no way the next Xbox will be cheap enough or subsidized enough and too many tariffs in some cases to penetrate those markets. Too much poverty in general for any amount of returns. MS would be better off marketing the first Xbox in South America.

you should not underestimate the growing middle class segment in those countries

and with a lifespan on up to 10 years, any company would be stupid to ignore that market. Actually it is more stupid to ignore that market than to ignore japan (which is more of a lost cause)

Fair point.

I still think Japan is a lost cause at this point. They've tried twice, with ample support but they've barely managed to scratch the surface. Focus on Europe at the start of the generation and move into South America, etc once the console can be sold at a relatively competitive price for those regions.

Microsoft will take Japan seriously. I'm betting on major first party Japanese releases. Watch and see. They probably won't show these at the reveal, but they very well might at E3, and I certainly expect something to be shown at TGS or other big Japanese events.

why even bother, if the Wii U can't even sell like hotcakes, why would a New Xbox sell. Focus where you are already breaking ground. South America, Europe Murica, ect.

I think MS need to change approach to Japan. They just can't charge in where that market is concerned and expect success. Personally I think they need to change the name.

I don't see why they can't focus on making further inroads in all of the above, Japan included.

They made gains with the 360 and it's profitable. I see no reason they won't be as aggressive with securing similar levels of content for Japan as the West, as there's a bit of an overspill there too. That and diversity helps their perceptions too.

Basically they want Xbox to appeal to as wide a market as possible. Invest heavily on moneyhatted exclusives at the start of the generation to get people hooked in, profit big years later.

Damn, will be in a hotel again trying to watch this over a shit hotel wifi connection. Same as the bloody Sony event. Might just wait until after and catch up later in the week

It's not about selling like hotcakes in Japan, it's about providing your consumer base with as much diverse content as possible. People in America want Japanese role playing games, too. People in America and other places want great Japanese content, too.

You want as many customers as possible with as many different tastes as possible, because it benefits your platform. I was never interested in an Xbox platform before Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. I've become opened up to a number of first party Xbox franchises thanks to being inspired to purchase the platform as a result of Microsoft investing in the kind of content that gets people like me excited. Microsoft better take Japanese content seriously, and I think they will.

It's going to be very interesting if the Niche Japanese developers or franchises are on the list of companies supporting the Durango. So the likes of Level 5, Namco, the Tales series etc.I really really hope MS gets them on board.

What was the last best selling JRPG on the Xbox or PS3??? Can anyone tell me. Compare it to a Halo. Oh not a fair comparison, then why bother where the is no $$$.
I mean my favorite game i even played is a Jrpg. such a niche market.
You know what WHO KNOWSSSSS 3 Days almost there.

The $$$ comes from Xbox Live subscriptions, not software sales. They want to entice as many people onto the system as possible.

Even 1000 extra adopters is a huge cash grab in the long run for MS. That's why they have started aggressively marketing in niche countries like here in Israel. The 360 only properly localized in Nov 12 but they are advertising the Reveal like crazy.

Japan won't be sidelined and Japanese content will be plentiful.

good luck in getting Japanese to subscribe to Xbox Live
that is probably harder than selling actual console, and I guess one of the major reasons on why the 360 failed in japan

good luck in getting Japanese to subscribe to Xbox Live

Reading, how does it work?

Hint: not only Japanese people buy Japanese orientated games.

Also Japanese Xbox owners are pretty damn dedicated. They were celebrating the Reveal being mentioned on the dash as proof they weren't skipping the region entirely next gen. Most are on Live.

Can I have some of what you are smoking?

The core of their revenue base is royalties from software sales. This is augmented by revenue from live and selling additional services.

Sure, Live has become a lot of money... and over time might actually eclipse other revenues... but right now I resolutely do not believe it is more than they get from income related to games and dlc sales.

Why subscribe if there is no software.

It's also speculated that MS are targeting Live subscriptions for their major source of revenue with Durango.

Why subscribe if there is no software.

There will be software.

Microsoft is currently making more selling services than software.

guys, guys.. they make money out of everything, not only from subscriptions or only from software royalties.
and LOTS of it.

and that's exactly why they should strive to give us only the very best!

The bestest of the best. I actually think they might sell this thing for cheaper than expected.

I wonder if there's a really small subset of Japanese gamers who are sick pumped for xbox and western games?

I'd love to know their point of view on this event when it happens.

There is.

I spend quite a lot of time in Japan (my wife is Japanese) and I am always impressed with some of the hardcore 360 fanboys. There are not many of them, but they love the console.

Just got the down low from my confidant. Unfortunately they use a special type of paint that doesnt allow you to photograph the new Xbox. (this is real).

Actually, if MS got their Japanese services in line this gen, say a partnership with Tsutaya or the like, they could make some serious inroads.

Sorry, by who and where... I've never seen that said.

Adam Sessler in the Sessler's Something about the reveal, among others.

Makes sense too, software development costs are only going up, so revenue becomes less of an issue compared to the millions they rake in through Live.

They'll try and build on that with Durango by attracting as wide a market as possible.

To reiterate; software is primarily a carrot to get people onto Xbox infrastructure and keep them there.

So it was one journo's personal opinion? Why would we put more weight in that than the opinion of anyone on a forum? Other than they get paid to have a view.

Because it makes sense.

Microsoft like money, they currently get more of it from Live and services than software sales, they will want to milk that cow even more. Software releases entice gamers to buy into Durango and spend their money on its services and subscriptions.

Also I'm surprised you put as much stock in baseless rumors from random asshats on internet forums as an industry insider with a fairly trusted reputation, but hey.

This totally explains why we didn't see pics of console or controller yet.

So, photographers are screwed, send the painters !

This is you... trying to start another rumour and failing.

As if of all the things people would talk about from this event, if they chose to talk about it at all... would be something they would do to limit the media? hardly what you do to get them onside before your biggest ever launch event, is it.

Also, if you really do have inside information, which is about as likely as me flying to the moon on my lunch break... you are, well, slightly useless for not getting something more meaningful.
