"Boy" is rascist now?

Next thing you know people will figure out a way to make "son" derogatory. Then what the hell will I use at the end of sentences?

"Nanomachines son!"

The word, like I said on the previous page, has been used prominently through out the Jim Crow era. This isn't a new thing. Calling a grown man a boy is inherently condescending.

It may be condescending but its not rascist. I mean if I replace boy with son its the same thing, I am talking in a condescending manner but not rascist..

It was back in the day, and some people still don't take to kindly to it. It is what it is. Context is everything.

edit: Started playing Kim in KoF. I feel like I've seen the light.

Yeah "boy" is racist depending on the context. Here in the south, if you're a white dude and you call a black person who's obviously not a child a "boy" then you're just asking for trouble.

Hope it's not a perma. Bluerei is a pretty cool dude and probably just didn't know. I didn't know "oriental" and "jap" were supposed to be offensive until I was like 20.

It was edited.
He used the N word.

Oh. Yep that'll do it.

Dude no...

Wait, oriental is offensive? Or is this just part of a modern movement to remove that sort of categorization?

I always knew jap was offensive though, it's pretty much exclusively used in offensive contexts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orient

"Oriental" is considered to be an antiquated, pejorative, and disparaging term in the United States. John Kuo Wei Tchen, director of the Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program and Institute at New York University, said the basic critique of the term developed in the 1970s. Tchen has said, "With the anti-war movement in the ’60s and early ’70s, many Asian Americans identified the term ‘Oriental’ with a Western process of racializing Asians as forever opposite ‘others’".[7] In a press release related to legislation aimed at removing the term "oriental" from official documents of the State of New York, Governor David Paterson said, "The word ‘oriental’ does not describe ethnic origin, background or even race; in fact, it has deep and demeaning historical roots"

Oriental gets awkward because it's viewed as offensive in the US, but is used in place of Asian in the UK. (The subjectivity of culture at work.)

Ah, I see.

Pretty soon calling someone Asian is going to be seen as bad too. I know people who take offense to it especially South Asian folks (Indian, Bengalis etc) because Asia is a huge continent with lots of races and people usually mean East Asian or South East Asian. Even worse is when people call a South Asian person Middle Eastern.

Didn't you not grow up in America? This would make more sense to you if you did.

Some one link this man to a theoretical marvel 3 patch discussion.

The average knowlege of an American citizen about world geography and culture is abysmal. I mean you know its bad when Sikhs get accused of being terrorists on a fairly common basis. People think I got here to the US on a raft. Yea I fucking steered my bamboo raft 2000 miles from the Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Mexico...

And yes I spent a lot of schooling years in US. You got away with a lot of racial and homophobic crap in high school. 90% of these terms I didn't even know of before.... when I came here someone asked me if I was a fgt and I was like "excuse me? I am unaware of this term". This was in like 6th grade.

Wait someone got banned for it??!

OMG! Well that's another word I won't be using now on GAF. I seriously can't believe it.

In the 21st century, not in Jim Crow days.

Edit: NVM he used the N word. Crisis averted.

Wasn't the best thread to do it either. Them poligaf threads are just bans waiting to happen.

Should X-factor be available as a combo breaker in the marvel patch?
Only if upon using it your XF is all burnt up. Otherwise it would be broke and give dark anchor characters 2 lives (in the case of Phoenix 3 lives). Characters like Morrigan and Zero would also benefit greatly as they don't need XF and combo breaker XF is not going to be that useful against Morrigan as most of her damage is from chip.

Makes sense. Having another option to escape incoming mix ups would be good I think. Or is there another system change already identified to help with that?

Marvel has TACs already, we don't need any shittier mechanics added to the game like combo breakers.

Only change to X-Factor I would accept is to just make it a free cancel. I wouldn't want a change in values either. You go up and it's too powerful, you go down and the mechanic is worthless.

Combo breakers don't sound bad to me. It was in TvC and I liked it.

The reason I like them is chances are if you have xfactor for your anchor character, you are going to use it to go nuts and try and win the round.

So it really just gives you a potential second chance on your point character, which I like because I find the parts of the match where you have all your character and assist options the most fun to play.

After MK9 and Missiles I'm very negative on them. I don't mind BB:CP's implementation, though.

What about wagers?

Really? Thats the entire sliding scale? C'mon. A mechanic that lets half the cast wipe out 3 characters with a basic combo can certainly be reigned in better.

There is. Viscant suggested that characters appeared higher when coming in. This will avoid some unblockable set ups and give the player coming in more options. Another change was on Jam Session because that is the most powerful incoming mix up assist in the game, this was recommended by FGTV and I am fine with it especially in a post nerfed HM UMVC3.

I think in terms of incoming mix ups these are the key issues that are problematic:

*Unblockable set ups. Taskmaster, Viper, Firebrand and X23 are culprits. Spider Man and She Hulk can do it off 2 meters.

*Jam Session mix ups with Zero and lvl4 Frank. Too many mix ups that are extremely hard to block. Even one 50/50 is extreme, having to block 4/5 of them among other varieties thrown in the mix is a nightmare.

*Guard break set up. Avoided by not push blocking but if you had the option to push block it would make things easier. Right now you can't push block Frank because its a free AA grab.

*The arc at which incoming characters come makes it so that its really easy to get off a super ambiguous cross under that clearly looks like it hits from the front by actually hits you in the back. This is the Haggar special.

*Finally just the way throwing teching works. It doesn't push them far back enough and you just eat more pressure.

Really like the way Injustice handled combo breakers but i adore the options you have with them in ASW games. Wouldn't mind bursting out of a doom infinite

I don't think it's a great mechanic, but I also don't agree with the assertion where it "lets you." Most of the time that happens too, it's the second player to activate and the first player ended up using their X-Factor irresponsibly too. I think normalizing damage boost percentages is also an option though. Okay maybe a SLIGHT decrease. But really if you tweak it too far it loses it's value, and a lot of characters have not that impressive values in the first place, especially when you factor in scaling.

Burst mechanics are just a bandaid on the real problem. If you have one combo breaker but infinites are rampant why would you waste it on that? Just take the free meter gain or better yet its more chance for your opponent to fuck up. I would rather use the breaker when Doom is doing his lvl3 so his bars are wasted and I survive with my last character.

Let's not start with the baitable bursts either although that is a caveat I would be fine with having.

As hard as it is to believe... XF is a problem that is not all that high in terms of most problematic/bull shit things in MVC3. The biggest problem with it aside from the speed boost on certain characters is how stacking XF with other power/speed boosts work. Its a mathematical problem which is an easy fix.

Honestly after the way this game has played out im half convinced we're all wrong at the same time.
