MS deal with NFL supposedly cost $400 Million

The NFL and Microsoft, through its next generation Xbox device, are combining to upgrade interactive TV viewing of pro football games in a multiyear agreement announced Tuesday. The next step after that, perhaps as early as 2014, will be bringing technology to the sidelines on tablets.

The deal is worth $400 million over five years for the NFL, according to a person familiar with the agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because financial details have not been made public.

"When you think about the sidelines, what is most important for us is how you make the game of football better, make what the coaches and players do better, using technology but preserving the competition," said Brian Rolapp, chief operating officer of NFL Media. "The challenge is how to bring technology to make it a better experience for them and for the fans.

"You can start with how we communicate with each other, whether it's game officials or coaches. Coaches can look at formations as they develop. We'll look at how do you do the still photos better, get more into real time? Is there a more efficient way to give replay officials a way of doing reviews better through technology?"

That's for the future, albeit the not-too-distant future.

Fans will get new television viewing innovations, including the ability to watch games, Skype video chat with other fans, view statistics, access highlights in real time and gather fantasy information about players and teams -- all on a single screen. For those who prefer multiple screens, fans can get an even deeper experience on mobile devices and tablets with SmartGlass technology.

Quite a bit of money, wouldn't you say? Do you think it'll pay off in the long run?

hahahahaha, damn how can a company do SO MUCH SHIT WRONG?

Question, can MS survive with only the USA? because that's what's going to happen, NO ONE ELSE will ever want a MS console.

It's not just for the Xbox. It's basically the NFL using Microsoft products like Skype and probably Windows tablets.

was probably worth it for them.

as a european gamer.....woooohooooooo :/

I don't follow this sport at all, but how does the whole Sunday Ticket thingy that Sony has compare to what MS showed? I guess I should look up exactly what Sunday ticket is.

Considering I (and probably 95% of the population of my country and many others around the world) dont even know what NFL is (much more what sport is involved) I would say it was a good investiment.

For the US market. lol

How deep are their pockets?

There is still One advertising, twitch.tv, exclusive DLC, ???

Wonder how much this will pay off. But what's the point here? Do they really profit as much as they spend, or are they just trying to keep Sony down?

What's wrong with this exactly? Sony has a similar $300 million deal with FIFA.

Seems like a crazy ass amount of money, but why is this wrong? What insight do you have about any of this other than probably, "I like anime and hate football?"

I just find silly how much focus is going to the damn TV part of it. And how much focus there is to only the USA, there's ZERO appeal to the rest of the world with anything they do, EU/Latin America/Japan will ignore the console.

That's $25k more than what they spent on Rare, and the NFL license will probably do more for them in the US than Rare ware ever could...

Probably a drop in the bucket on Microsoft's bank accounts in the long run, though.

Sunday Ticket costs DirecTV a BILLION dollars a year to get from the NFL so 400 Million over 5 years won't include anything like Sunday Ticket levels of access.

I'd expect glorified fantasy football (which is a giant market itself) and maybe some other benefits like highlights.

What deal is that?

Also, Football is the worlds sport ...... much more reach with that ....... makes more sense from an investment point of view.

I live in the UK. Why the fuck should I give a shit about the NFL? Or the TV feedthrough? Or anything else similarly US centric that was announced?

Rhetorical question, btw.

I don't understand. Microsoft didn't buy exclusive broadcasting rights to show NFL games - only add fantasy stats to be shown on the screen. The 400m surely isn't something paid out by Redmond? Regardless, what will Microsoft do in Europe with the multitude of broadcasters? This TV element of XB1 cant surely be US only?

Amazing truly amazing.

For 400M you can fund like 400 to 800 Xbox One XBLA titles, you can make like 20 'AAA' exclusives or you can use it that 400M to make better hardware.

That's more money than they are spending on game development (reported 300 million something).

Wouldn't be far off at all.

If Game Informer is to be believed, GTA IV has sold 25 million copies.

It's doubtful that all of those go at $60 retail but $1.5 billion > 400 million.

Shave off how much of those sales were under 60$, then shave off the money that doesn't go to the Publisher....

400 million could do a lot.

This seems ridiculous. Why would you pay $400 million to put up stats for a game on the side of the screen? Unless this leads to more than the stuff that they showed today it just sounds like they are throwing away money.

The US is xbox's biggest market, and their home market at that, so I fully expect they to push the hardest towards that market. That being said, I hardly think a 1-day hardware reveal is anything to assume that there won't be anything good for EU and that no one will buy it overseas.

I dunno I get everyone's shitting on the deal, but as a big nfl fan and a fantasy sports player, I'm pretty excited about this personally. I don't give a fuck how much it cost MS.

Sounds like they're probably furnishing Surface tablets for digital playbooks in addition to other cross-promotional stuff.

Yeahe, this will help alot to sell One´s in Europe.
Yup. Wake me up when/if MS decides to offer anything interesting to us over here in Europe.

Way too much money spent on what only appeals to fraction of your audience (mind that not every US gamer is into football/sports either).
