Lol @ this. Someone made a google doc out of all the hilariously stupid shit Ford has done over the years.

For the people in this thread claiming false allegations, just be aware that the Toronto Star has basically bet its entire business on this story. The two main journalists involved are their top dogs.

You can call into question certain aspects of the paper's reputation, sure, but this isn't a tabloid we are talking about. A paper like the Star doesn't move on a story like this unless it is 100% sure of itself.

It seems like The Star was trying to obtain the video from the sellers in some way (man that video would get some hits for the paper) but they were forced to publish their story when the dude from Gawker spilled the beans. And he spilled the beans because he was trying to get some backing to obtain the video himself but the people he went to (like morons) went to the Mayor's office for official comment.

The sellers are probably spooked off at this point and on the run.

Yeah, it seems that CNN really F'd this one up. I'm hoping the journalists who went to see the video were more clever than they admitted though, and have kept some ties to evidence, be it the video itself or (more likely) the people involved.

Hell maybe this is advertising that the sellers will use to actually get the kind of money they want. That would be hella ballsy of them though.

The way I see it, since both The Star and Gawker seem to have contacts with the sellers of the video, even if they fork over the money, I'm sure the police will swoop in as soon as they have the chance. The question is whether or not the sellers realize this at this stage of the game and are getting out of the country, or are they so desperate for the cash that they might just do something really dumb.

The Star reporter says they are still in contact with the source:

We are in contact with the source, and others related to this story. It is impossible to predict what will happen, though it would not surprise me if it surfaced. We have made it clear to the source and associate that we think they should make it available to the public.

But they aren't comfortable with paying for the video even if it's for the public's good

People keep asking how he ended up mayor.

Our last mayor was David Miller , a former New Democrat Party (NDP) politician. The NDP are far to the left in terms of politcs. By US standards they would be considered almost communist.

Anyways to make a long story short David Miller enacted alot of policies that benefited the downtown core while upsetting suburbanites that tend to be more conservative.

A small example ... a 3 lane road (Jarvis) in Toronto that was a major north south artery through the city was cut down to 2 lanes to make room for bike lanes. Great for the city, bad for anyone commuting in by car.

That's just a small thing, but in the end the election of Ford showed a very steep divide between the political leanings of downtown citizens versus the suburbs. People are underestimating how much alot of folks hate "the "left" in the 905 area (code). I'm not even sure it was about politics so much as a feeling of wanting a mayor that would enact policies that consider the suburbs.

Alot of the progress made under David Miller benefited the downtown core directly, while suburbans felt (right or wrongly) their tax dollars were footing the bill. Ford campaigned on cutting taxes for the middle class in the suburbs and cutting down the huge spending of the former administration. The "gravy train"

Unfortunately Ford's vision of the gravy train included things like public libraries, arts programs, etc .... The council HATES the mayor with a passion as does the Toronto Star (the star is basically our leftist newspaper) as his politics are directly against everything they hold dear.

One thing is clear though, Ford won the majority of the vote. So while he has vocal opponents, he does have a clear mandate.

Eh, there were plenty of polls showing that Miller would have won if he had run for re-election. There really wasn't that much dissatisfaction with him, Ford won because his name was well known and he was the complete opposite of the disliked Smitherman. If lefts leading candidate had less baggage, Ford would have lost.

yeah, a friend of mine who lives in the Toronto suburbs was very happy when Ford got elected (I'm in Montreal and don't follow local Toronto politics so i didn't know who Ford was back then) and had been somewhat supportive of him even after he was booted out with that last scandal.

His opinion about Ford absolutely boil down to this. He didn't want to get taxed for stuff affecting the downtown core.

It's anecdotal for sure, but it's right in line with your post.

So yeah, according to gawker who were doing that "crackstarter", the chances of getting the video have "diminished".

Fucking liars. I honestly believe those reporters and gawker are a bunch of liars.

They went out, defaced Rob Fords name by saying they saw a video, have no shred of fucking evidence, then when their crowdsourcing thing gets close to reaching their goal, they come out with an update saying "Hey guys, I know where close, but yeah, we might not get the video. lol"

Go after his policies, things he has said, sure. But you cant say you saw a video of him smoking crack, provide no evidence, and completely disgrace him not only in Canada, but in America too.

I don't agree with it.

I think there's something to this. If the video never sees the light of day, could they potentially be sued for libel?

I truly hope so. I would wait till they "attempt" to get the video. If they can't, then fuck em. Take them to court.

People cant be allowed to do this.

With the way Ford and his staff have been acting, how can you possibly deny that all this actually took place? The video is only the final nail in the coffin.

Rob Ford does a good enough job defacing his own name. And you know what? If Rob Ford didn't do what they claimed, he would already be suing the fuck out of Gawker and The Star, and screaming from the high heavens that he's innocent, but he hasn't even denied it happened! He's too busy firing his Chief of Staff and getting sand in his vagina over getting dumped as a high school football coach.

Wake the fuck up, dude. You're embarrassing yourself.

lawd, a Rob Ford apologist. The way he's reacted alone confirms it.

Gawker has absolutely nothing to gain from a Rob Ford scandal, they were randomly approached and decided it would be a cool story - unless you think they, and the Toronto Star have somehow orchestrated this whole thing to lie about Rob Ford. But what would either party have to gain? Especially by giving false hope about the video coming forward?

I'm not a Ford supporter at all but I agree with what he said. Everything regarding this reeks of filth. Ford, journos, source. Pure filth.
But what's the alternative? Let's assume for one second that they in fact, did see the video - should they have kept completely closed mouthed about it, when they weren't actually willing to drop 6 figures on such a tape?

So he denies it....

Yet people are still hounding him, asking him constantly if its true. The fuck do you want from him? How can he prove he didn't to you? He can't. Its not possible.

So he has already been sentenced as a crack smoker without a SINGLE SHRED OF EVIDENCE.

I don't give a shit what some journos saw on some iphone. You want to accuse someone of smoking crack, show me the proof.

Personally, I'd keep my mouth shut if I couldn't prove it. Fortunately for journalists they don't have any real responsibilities.

No, he said it was ridiculous. He didn't deny anything.

Coming out and denying it, and suing Gawker and The Star, or at least threatening to, would be a good start. Not saying things like "how can you tell it was crack inside that pipe" or "what if the video is doctored?". That's the worst form of damage control.

He also has not explained why he fired his Chief of Staff.

Well there are other questions that people have been asking - mostly in an attempt to clarify certain statements made.

Well, some would argue that it's a journalist's responsibility to present this info to the public, even if they don't have all the evidence.

Pretty much this. If it's not true, he should have come out charging and sue them all for character defamation. By just claiming it as "ridiculous", it paints a much more greyer picture where he clearly has some dirt that doesn't want to be dug up.

That's not good enough. Here's what's going through peoples heads.

If the mayor truly did not smoke any crack, and these stories were all lies, he would want the Toronto Star destroyed. He would be suing the Toronto Star and Gawker for everything they have. He would stop at any moment possible and say "I have never smoked crack, this video does not exist, it's all a lie".

Instead, he's just said once that "it's ridiculous" and then kept quiet about it.

oh man lmao! If ever a super pac needed to be created to gather money for the purpose of ruining a politicians career. $100,000 to get this tape on the internet would be that cause

Everyone else already beat me to the punch. But yes, it looks terrible on him for not getting out in front of this last week and confronting it head on if the allegations were false. Even if he was smoking hash, as someone suggested he 'could be', he might as well come out and admit it. Instead, he opts to duck out the back door of City Hall every day this week and avoid the press at all cost. And then he fires his CoS, for reasons that befuddle his few close allies that remain (like Doug Holyday).
Even before the crack video, there were rumblings about his drinking problem. Numerous parties where he would be hammered, and even getting thrown out of one.

Substance abuse issues aside; The guy has already shown an ineptitude for city planning and development, couldn't work with anyone, and had his council turn against him. So all he's doing as Mayor at this point is being the embarrassing face of the city to the rest of Canada and the world.

A small example ... a 3 lane road (Jarvis) in Toronto that was a major north south artery through the city was cut down to 2 lanes to make room for bike lanes. Great for the city, bad for anyone commuting in by car.
I'm on Jarvis nearly every day by car and I like it. Bikers/Vespers aren't in my way, neither are parked cars and other drivers aren't trying to overtake recklessly anymore.

Cbc reports that the chief of staff was canned for telling ford to go to rehab..... Wow

Link to the article for those interested.
Mark Towhey was fired as Mayor Rob Ford's chief of staff because he told Ford in no uncertain terms to "go away and get help," a source close to the mayor's office has told CBC News.

The story broke last week and shortly after Towhey faced down the mayor telling him he needed help.

At the end of the ceremony Ford left quickly and just a few minutes later was closeted in a room with his top advisers to discuss the cocaine scandal.

Towhey is said to have gathered together the inner circle and presented Ford with options.

The source said Ford was presented with three options, though exactly what those options were is not known.

But when it became clear the meeting "was not going anywhere," Towhey cleared the room and presented the mayor with one option and told him for the third time, "You have a problem. Go away and fix it."

The source said Ford repeatedly laughed off attempts to enter rehab.

When the others returned to the room Towhey told them the mayor had chosen the fourth option — to do nothing.

The situation within the mayor's office came to a head on Wednesday when it was learned Ford had been dumped from his cherished job as head coach of the Don Bosco Eagles — a senior high school football team.

According to the source, Ford wanted to have the players and coaches over to his house for a get-together.

Towhey, the source said, told staff not to get involved in organizing any such party and told Ford not to drag others into the imbroglio.

The two men argued over the mayor going to rehab — and Ford fired Towhey on Wednesday night, the source said. On Thursday he confirmed the firing to his face at city hall.

Towhey "wasn't fired over a party," he was fired because he told the mayor he needs to go away and get help, the source said.

The mayor's office has refused comment.

Towhey himself told reporters on Thursday that he wouldn't talk about the advice he had given the mayor or the circumstances leading up to the firing.

The guy needs help. If he were to follow his own advice, he'd "dry out in jail".

I actually have some sympathy for this man and his trainwreck of a life, until I remember that he is in charge of Canada's largest city.

It would be easier to feel sorry for him if he wasn't a bully with his politics and didn't make racist, homophobic, or otherwise offensive remarks every month, or two. :/

This is nothing short of amazing. I can't remember the last time we Canadians had this kind of live-action political train-wreck occurring before our eyes.
