Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Unpopular opinion:

I would actually like the Vita to get discontinued as soon as possible. I want SCEJA / SCEA / SCEE / WWS to devote 100% of their resources into making PS4 the best system they possibly can. It's annoying that right now, their resources are still split into trying to prop up a dying console.

I don't want anyone to lose their job--instead, I'd like any Sony studio / partner working on Vita games to begin work on (or convert them into) PS4 games.

I feel the Vita is such a failure in the worldwide market that it should be discontinued immediately in Europe and the USA, with a staggered discontinuation in Japan within the next year.

I think one of the very reasons a Sony handheld will never hit critical mass is that Sony refuses to have all their main devs make games for it. Nintendo will happily put dudes like Miyamoto and Sakurai to work on flagship handheld titles, so it makes sense to me that their hardware ends up being more successful. At least Sony has Media Molecule making a Tearaway, and naturally people are excited for it since it looks great and it's from a dev they know with a good pedigree.

Morrowind, Dark Souls, Platinum Games and Obsidian all have batshit crazy fans that make me dislike their favourite games before I've even tried them. In fact, its highly likely I will never play those games BECAUSE of their crazy fans. Whenever I detect someone as being one of those fans I immediately disregard their post and move on to the next post.

Way to go guys, for actively killing sales of those games with your unrelenting, militant and offputting 'support'. Not all of them are crazy, there's of course some sensible restrained people among them, but there's enough bad apples to colour peoples perceptions. The extreme fandom and insistence that their games are the holy grail and nothing else can touch them is just too much.

It amazes me that there are gamers on this forum who would rob themselves of something they might enjoy because of how other people perceive the things they could be enjoying, whether positive (in this case) or negative. Why not try something new, broaden your horizons and find out for yourself? I mean I think Morrowind is boring and I hate its combat but I also gave it a fair shake.

Man a lotta work to respond to. Let's get started.

Snatcher, Silpheed, Sonic CD , Shining Force CD, Popful Mail, Final Fight CD (which up until very recently was the closest to the arcade version you could get on home platforms), the first two Lunar games, Robo Aleste and Lords of Thunder. Those are my personal favorites on the platform.

The fact you included Sonic CD and Final Fight CD really makes me question if you're shitting me. But, out of the remainder which would you recommend so I may try them out later on today.

Sonic CD and Sonic 2 say Hello!
Basically every other Sonic game that isn't Sonic CD or Sonic Spinball.

Sonic CD is terrible. I don't like the level design in the game.

The TRUF.

Female protagonists in big action games are silly because females are always in the kitchen making sandwiches.

Cooking mama is the best game of all time.

10/10 I lol'd. I like Cooking Mama because she's a strong independent woman who can handle shit when things get bad. Matter in fact. I need to run to Rule 34. I wonder what kind of shit people come up with for her. "Let Mama handle it."

That's how I feel about open world games in general.

Same here padre, same here. Matter infact, surprisingly Saints Row may be the only real open world game I like. I'm not sure if I can consider Shenmue open world, but that shit is hot too.

People who whine about the negative practices of big companies like EA, Sony, etc. yet continually buy their products need to stop whining or speak with their wallets.

Just look at the SimCity fiasco. Fucking pathetic. As soon as news broke that the game would require always-on internet and had forced multiplayer components, everyone threw their arms up in the air yet preordered the game anyway. Then when the game came out and you had the usual server errors, people whined again.

I'm fucking tired of gamers screaming for quality games and better treatment yet constantly throwing their money at AAA shitfests without even batting an eye. And then they wonder why the AAA companies are 'too big to fail' while just rehashing the same IP over and over while dumbing down gameplay and not doing anything interesting in that regard.

Would it really be the end of the world if you didn't play the latest AAA game? If you don't like the DRM, or the company, to the point that you vote EA worst in America, why the fuck do you buy preorder their products like SimCity?

If you want better games and better treatment of customers (e.g. no draconian DRM), stop fucking supporting these practices and rewarding said companies. Blizzard, EA, Sony, etc. will never learn or change if the gaming community constantly rewards them for their ineptitude. And you know what? I don't want them to learn or change if they're unwilling to do so. Fuck 'em.

My homie Snacks.... Let em know.

Controversial opinion..

Nintendo is doing just fine and it's much too soon to even come close to calling the wiiU a failure or success for that matter.

The negative attention is the result of a snowball effect of negative press and not through any direct fault of Nintendo's

Also I thoroughly enjoyed other M.

Brofist. WE SHALL PREVAIL.

I don't get why there are so many xbox fans here on neogaf more interested in the xbox infinity than the ps4. Faulty 360s, paying for something that should be free, near abandonment of the hardcore in favor of kinect, losing nearly everyone and every development studio that made the xbox brand what it. Why are you supporting this? I mean the excuses for xbox live on 360 were that your friends were on it, well here is your chance to change this. Another was that the 360 had the best version of multiplatform titles. Well it seems like it's most likely the PS4 will have the better versions this time (due to the much better GPU and ram).

I hate Playstations, and their userbase consists of the most smug assholes of all time that feel like Sony is the Messaiah of Gaming. They even try to act like Kaz Hirai has some thing to contribute (I'm serious.) and even though Mark Cerny is currently popular, before that reveal he wasn't about shit, and after E3 and the hype dies, he will continue his life being not about shit.

Sonic adventure 2 is a masterpiece and no game will only Sonic Unleashed, Colors, Generations ever compare to it.

Sonic 06 is mediocre and dumb, but by no means unplayable. It's even kinda fun, sometimes.

.......Yeah.

Bugs Bunny Lost in Time is just as good as Super Mario 64

When I was a kid I used to love the Looney Tunes games on PC. Namely Sheep Raider.

I think this is controversial? Double Dash is my favorite Mario Kart.

Also from a casual perspective Brawl is a superior game compared to Melee. I know they fucked it all up for the competitive scene though.

You damn right it is. Double Dash was the best Kart, and Brawl was the best Smash. Fuck the haters.

This was my experience with the game haha. Daisy all day err day, with Toadette riding shotgun.

Haha! Man it's all about that Baby Bowser + Waluigi combination on dat ATV!!!

In every course I used to get straight Bowser Shells and Bob-Ombs, I dropped the Bowser Shells in Narrow Spaces, and the Bomb Omb at the end of ramps because fuck everybody.
--------

Also. Blueshells are the greatest fucking thing to EVER happen to Kart Racing.

Mario Kart DD had the best item system.

and people who play Kart Racers and have the nerve to whine that items are not fair and doesn't take skill need to shut their bitch ass up because they lack the most necessary skill to play a Kart Racer: To Adapt, Survive, and Win.

Marvel 3 and SFIV are the cancer of fighting games.

Also, I don't want this to be a main feature of F-Zero, but I would love to see an F-Zero with items.

In the past 2 months I've tried Fallen Enchantress, my first 4x game (then Might and Magic 6 off the back of that, my first M+M game). Tried X-COM, my first tactical battle game. And tried Euro Truck Sim 2, my first sim game. I think I give new experiences a fair shake.

The notion that girls are into games are just one of those bedtime stories that people tell us to make us believe that one day we will find a girlfriend who is into games like us.

No, i don´t count casual facebook shit or "i´ve played that mario game when i was little" in the BS statistics that say the market is 50% guys, 50% girls.

Girls are just not into gaming at all. It´s best to accept this is a fact and move on. Any girl you meet in real life will think you are still a child for thinking too much about games.

Girls into gaming, like the ones here on GAF are like 1% of the hardcore gaming population.

Proof to my theory: i never met any girl in real life that i could call a traditional gamer. NEVER EVER! So those facts have made me a strong believer of my theory.

It´s a controversial opinion, and it´s a shame because i would like to be wrong.

I take it you don't get out much. Or are not looking in the right spots. I've met plenty girls who game just as hardcore (if not moreso) than myself...

Mark Cerny has been a prominent figure in the gaming industry since he was a teenager. You are clueless.

I doubt all the people who say they hate DRM or EA bought SimCity.

I doubt all the people who say they hate DRM or EA bought SimCity.

That's not what I said. That quoted part was making a larger, general point about consumers in this industry.

Most of the people who bitched about EA/DRM/mandatory multiplayer for SimCity bought the game anyway. That's because many gamers have little willpower to stay true to their words in these types of situations because they "gotta play it".

It honestly feels like Arc Christelle is just trolling at this point.

Nah man, I got much love for you guys and keep it honest all the way. This really is the best gaming community on the internet. I just keep a humorous slant on everything in the spirit of fun.

Mark Cerny has been a prominent figure in the gaming industry since he was a teenager. You are clueless.

Well it is an opinion thread, and I really didn't know shit about this guy until the PS4 reveal. Can you show me any sources that were before the PS4 reveal and outside of his resume that made him relevant that I may have overlooked?

Just look at his Wiki. He worked for Atari as a teenager, designed Marble Madness at 18, worked on and consulted on tons of games over the years (Crash, Spyro, Sonic 2, etc.). He's in the AIAS "Hall of Fame" alongside guys like Miyamoto, Yu Suzuki, Carmack, etc.

Yea, Sony fanboys are annoying but it is simply ridiculous to say he wasn't shit before the PS4 reveal.

Like I said, I doubt it was "most of the people." Maybe some of them did, or maybe others were just complaining. SimCity sold a lot of units and maybe people were just fine with the situation. Uhh, what? Sonic CD you may dislike and I'd agree it's probably the worst of the 16 bit Sonic platformers but you have no idea what you're talking about if you are gonna shit on Final Fight CD. FFCD was the best and most faithful arcade port available for home consoles for 12 years, until Capcom released an emulated version in a compilation on PS2 that was more accurate. Furthermore it still has a fanbase because it's considered the hardest version of the game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not uniformed about him, I just don't didn't really hear about the guy before the reveal. So to a guy like me, who wasn't aware of him at the time, he wasn't shit.

I'll give it a try before I write it off. Usually when FF is discussed we're usually talking Arcade + SNES.

*shrug*

Inspired by the "The best third person shooter" thread I feel compealed to tell people that I thought Vanquish sucked.

It certainly wasn't as good as many of GAF make out, especially when it comes to, y'know, actually shooting stuff. Horrible.

I bought it because of the hype round here... twas a bad call.

GOG.com is the best digital distribution website/service. DRM free games, inexpensive, well designed and easy to navigate website and great selection of old games and even some new one's. Would take GOG.com over Steam any day!

Guy with Naruto and Sonic avatar branded with Nintendo fanboyism declares accomplished figure in videogame industry leads a life not about shit.

I used to think this until I worked at gamestop over the summer a few years ago. Often the reason you never meet women socially stunted enough to be a gaming enthusiast is because A) you never go outside, and B) neither do they.

One time at the register I had a conversation with a girl about GTA and she went off about how she hopes the protagonist of GTAV is white and I realized there's a chance that some of the crazy, racist youtube commenters on GTAV's trailers could be women and it's like, damn, the world is a big place full of interesting people.

Aliens: Colonial Marines isn't the worst thing ever. Its not even one of the worst games I've played this year.

Its not very good mind you, but it has its moments.
I agree, but only because I just played it for the first time last week on a $12 Amazon sale and post-patches.

Had I been there with my $60 in February I probably would have ripped the game to shreds and been extremely pissed off, just like everyone else. I don't think the opinion that Aliens in it current state is mediocre and average is all that controversial. I think it would be controversial to say that the game is still one of the worst games of the year after all the patches, because it's not really.

Srsly?

Not controversial.
It always seemed like people preferred Steam over GOG even when they both have the same titles. Although I understand Steam is popular because it has mostly newer games as opposed to classics which GOG more or less specializes in. In fact, I think I only have two Steam games, one (The Cave) of which I would have thought would be on GOG but I was "forced" to get it on Steam.

These people are crazy, ignore them :p

I thoroughly enjoyed Metroid Other M.

Skyward Sword is now my favorite Zelda ever.

Killzone 2 & 3 are terrible games.

I find games like EDF 2017/Insect Armageddon to be better than your Gears of War and other "AAA" shooters.

Wii is my favorite Nintendo home console since SNES and I feel Nintendo did the most unique things to get me happy to be a gamer again this gen.

Wii Sports/Resort are excellent games.

The Last Story is better than any Final Fantasy since IX.

Twin Snakes is the superior version of MGS1.

MGS4 is an awful game with awful controls.

Metal Gear Rising however is the best game in the series since Twin Snakes.

Kojima while a great director and very creative needs someone to reel him in, he should drop the 30-90 minute long anti war mini movies, for a slimmer sleeker campy/semi serious anti war story that could be told in 30 minutes of cut scenes in the entire game, the rest has to be in game.

The original Phantasy Star games are superior to their Online series, and they need to return.

Okami was boring with bad controls (all three consoles, now if they released a Wii U port they could fix the controls and keep me interested long enough to get to the good parts), Okamiden was a superior game with superior controls. (I still love Clover/Platinum games)

Super Mario Sunshine wasn't that great.

The PS2/GC/Xbox era was really bad, it turned me to PC gaming.

Brawl is superior to Melee, in fact I enjoy the first game more than Melee.

The Persona series is boring, I can only imagine it appeals to emo Otakus that don't have the nerve to buy real dating sims, the rest of the SMT games are amazing.

The Tales of games are awful, boring, and padded to hell and back. They also all follow the same formula and treat the gamer like he's a retard, and tend to fumble any character development they had about halfway through the game.

Metroid Prime 1&2 on GC has terrible controls.

FFXIII is so bad I will never sell it so I will never get the idea that I should give it a second chance and rebuy it, also I keep it to show my shame.

I hated the original Luigi's Mansion.

Sonic 3D Blast was an enjoyable game.

Mario is Missing isn't as bad as people make it out to be, I enjoyed myself as a kid.

This last one is more of a confession that has since changed, as a kid I wanted the Game Gear more than the Gameboy, I felt it was superior in every way because of color and a light up screen.

Gotta support that notion.
Of course, those 50% mostly include the stereotypical Sims / Animal Crossing / Tetris gamers, but most of the guys focus on Fifa / CoD / Halo / Dudebro stuff as well.
But there are female hardcore gamers out there. You just got to keep looking for them. I met my girlfriend on a Nintendo forum btw ;)

While I'm sure the game still plays and looks pretty bad on consoles, that's also missing a major element. For a game that focuses so much on license and story and canon acceptance to so savagely butcher Aliens lore (not to mention its having an entirely inane story that literally tells you at multiple points "just dont worry about X story inconsistency," license or no) makes it easily still one of the worst games of the year. Red boxed it for two days max and still feel very ripped off

tl;dr flame attack!

Xbox Live contributed to a step backwards in online gaming. People often write this off when I say it with the stupid line "Well it was much better than PSN!", yeah, but it being better than Sony's incoherent, underdeveloped and messy approach doesn't make my statement invalid.

Microsoft emphasise control over the network, they don't afford developers much freedom and thus we see a tightly controlled (mostly) peer to peer system that offers an experience worse than what I was having a decade ago on PC.

The Xbox 360 being the lead platform for many games, and the Xbox 360 and PS3 being many people's first real online gaming experience has conditioned people's expectations for games in such a way that they don't see many current online games as restrictive and a lesser experience. People don't expect control and customisation of their online gaming experience, they don't expect persistent communities around servers, instead they're used to this insular experience of jumping in and out of matches with a group of friends.

Something simple like being able to always visit certain servers set up by certain communities who want to play in a certain way really enhances the online experience and it keeps people playing for a longer time.

Xbox Live has had successes, but none of them in actual online gameplay. They were in the things around online gameplay. I credit Microsoft for that, but that isn't even the main part of online gaming.

- I think TWEWY is a fucking mess from its awkward gameplay to its sleep-inducing music and art style. The whole thing makes me feel like I'm being sedated.

- Nothing is compelling about the Genesis Sonic games, but Unleashed and forward "Modern Sonic" is really fun and fulfilling.

- When I see Mega Man, all I see is the symbol of some of the worst corporate management in video game history and thus don't want him in Smash 4.

- I liked Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, and didn't bitch about how amazing "Banjo-Threeie" would have been when multiple people including Gregg Mayles said they didn't want to do it.

- I like Rare's interpretation of Donkey Kong.

- I think Miyamoto should be fired immediately.

- I thought Unova sucked.

This is an actual controversial opinion considering how much automatic ditto-heading Xbox Live receives as the premiere online gaming service.

And you make a good point. Xbox Live is a wasteland of abandoned games that could have enjoyed a more robust fan community with dedicated servers and more user input and control.

Live was expertly tuned towards a certain kind of user/customer and it owes a lot of success to that, but it hasn't been the universal boon to online gaming many assume it to be.

Dark Souls sucks.

"The world is woven so intricately!"
No, it's not. The lack of map allowed the developers to lazily string a series of environments together with doors that seemingly act as portals to distant parts of the game. It's a gameplay convenience, but completely jarring in its design.

"The story is what you make of it!"
You're absolutely right. That's mostly due to the fact that the game makes no effort to convey a narrative to you outside of its cryptic opening. That would be fine, but there's zero environmental storytelling going on either. Think of games like Half Life, BioShock, and Shadow of the Colossus. Those games manage to tell a story without cutscenes or strings of dialogue. Dark Souls has nothing interesting to say about its world other than its bloody and mean. There's nothing provoking there, plenty of games go for a gritty game environment, and have more to say about them. Not every game needs a concrete narrative, but when people hail the game for its interpretative tale, I have to roll my eyes.

"The gameplay! Incredible!"
Yeah, well, it's really difficult. You really have to brave the next steps into the wild, and never drop your guard. The survival aspects of the game are its biggest accomplishments. People love to beat the game and say how easy it is, they get that warm, 16-bit pat on the back like in the good old days. Really, though, there's a lot of fundamental issues with the gameplay that go unmentioned. The lock-on is poor, resulting in frustration in battles with more than two enemies, or an unfair demise. The menus are a total cipher, and doing simple comparisons of weapons takes more time than it should. This was OK in Demon's Souls, but even after a second crack the developers did nothing to clean up their menus. Additionally, the magic system is ineffective for the early portions of the game. The means of using that magic is less fun than just bashing away at an enemy, and many players will probably leave casting by the wayside as a result.

"GAF's GOTG!"
Oh, please. If this was a mainsteam release from Blizzard (or something like that) we'd be screaming about the half-assed writing, framerate issues, busted physics engine, and scattered clunky design choices.

Yeah. I mean, there's a lot to like, but I strongly feel the game has a lot of issues.

thats an interesting point, pretty valid however I would like to add that the own nature of console market. Restriction and control allows a more accesible service and the console demographic benefits more from accesibility than freedom unlike PC.
Certainly, once the market is used to basic online interaction, it can be introduced to customization but that up to the posibility of the system, not in terms of hardware but in terms balancing the accesible experience for all kind of users in the larger consolo market.

ummmm okay

Cutscenes in first person are still cutscenes and all those audio logs are dialogue
