SHOCKING NEWS: Xbox One Voice Commands During Demo Weren't Real Time

It wouldn't surprise me if the voice commands weren't real in that environment, but we know they already work really well on the current Kinect. I have no doubt that what they've shown (simulated or not) will work as shown.

As for that Star Wars video; this was part of the Cirque du Soleil reveal for Kinect. I don't think anyone was under the illusion that they were actually using Kinect during that performance and they actually never claimed it was real either.

A lot of what is shown at reveals and places like E3 is faked. Voice recognition is especially tricky in these scenarios, as you don't want noise from the audience of 250 people (or however many journalists were there) to accidently trigger something. Kinect is also hard to do in these scenarios because you have huge stage lights, camera flashes, etc, which can fuck with the sensor causing unexpected problems that you will never have when you have this in your living room.

If you read some of the Xbox One articles by Wired and other places, not everything is finished with the OS yet (when switching between apps currently a green screen pops up for a split second Wired said). They have 5-6 months to finish everything and polish it all. Just because what they shown wasn't the real code running on the box, doesn't mean that's not how they want it to be when consumers get this in their hands.

It's similar to how a lot of PS4 games at the reveal were shown on PC. Just because it wasn't running on a PS4 that doesn't mean it won't look like that when you play the game. There will likely be minor differences from what they've shown, but nothing major.

Is that what you're telling me to remember? That everyone knew, instantly, that it was fake, and microsoft made every well aware that it was fake, as everyone knew it was an illusion, and wasn't actually using kinect?

I had a feeling about this. MS never shows anything in real time.

Kinect, Illuroom, and now this. Their presentations can't be trusted.

Everyone watching live certainly knew it wasn't real, nor intended to be. It was a bunch of dancers doing flips, running upside down inside a giant floating television, mimicking projected gameplay every so often as part of a dance routine.

Lol. I just mean they are always soooo bad. Every Move and Wii Mote presentation I have seen is filled w some crazy janky stuff happening.

The NBA game shown was not live - that's for sure. I doubt they would have risked live TV either. Switching to a live ad could have made for an interestingly memorable moment.
 
Showing CGI bullshit and claiming it's in-game is lying..
Showing a load of features that will never make it into the final console is tantamount to lying..

Staging a demo to avoid hiccups (bottom of shoe, or ninty's SS epic fails) when the press then get tech demo's to show how responsive the tech is, isn't lying..

Simple as that really..
 
If all things are stages, why MS need him using clicker in pocket?

Everything in the screen can be controlled completely in backstage, it would be more precise and more responsive.

Use Ocems Razor before coming to judgement.

Not on stage. Anything you see there is a show, not a demo.
Demos are done afterwards, there are many videos of people using the new kinect or voice commands in regular rooms (and you can see that reaction time or animations are not as smooth indeed).
It was the same thing for Milo at the time, the video was rehearsed, but later journalists could interact with the Milo prototype themselves.

Why? The voice commands on the current Kinect work very well. Why would they suddenly become horrible with the new system?
 
I figured it wasn't real time. Voice command stuff has proven to be pretty flaky, even in a quiet home environment. For such an important presentation as the unveiling of the new Xbox, I can't really blame them for taking it safe and faking it.
 
And according to multiple sources who were given the tour at the MS campus, one of whom was Jeff Gerstmann, they weren't shown the dashboard interface running in real time, let alone the voice commands.

It is mind-boggling how much of that press conference was smoke and mirrors and how many game journalists bought into the whole thing hook, line, and sinker.

Of course it wasn't real time. Don't you think it's strange the hand swipe worked to switch screens, but not when he was making similar hand gestures while talking.
