The Terrible Secret of New Leaf

Chapter 1

When I was a little girl, a couple of times every year, usually around holidays, my mother would drive me into the big city. These were my favorite days because I got to see my father. He was a very busy man, off building cities and running them. He was a world famous politician and infamously, hopelessly conservative. If he saw a plot of land big enough, he built some kind of settlement there. Environmentalism was not in his mental dictionary. But there was something strange about his construction. He loved animals, and he became known the world over for creating wonderful cities where animals and humans could co-exist in harmony. You could join a giraffe for a spot of tea, or go fishing with your favorite alligator pal. It was one of the most visited kinds of tourism spots, and it propelled my father, and my extension myself, into billionaire territory.

There were a few documented mishaps. Rumors of animal dictators, and human slave-workers. But no one ever found any clear-cut proof, so most of the cases got thrown out. At least that's what I had always heard.

Every time I stayed with Father for the weekend, he would take me all over the city and buy me whatever sweets and toys I wanted. And at the end of the week, my favorite part, he always took my on the train. I loved the service, the cozy nature, how fast the train would go, and the smoke and the sounds. Now, whenever I ride the train, I'm always reminded of my father.

I hate being reminded of my father.

The cabin was mostly empty. Shifting or hooded figures kept to themselves as the wheels clacked and the engine chugga chugga'd along. I don't think any of them even glanced in my direction when I came in, and made my way to me seat. I didn't put my bag in the overhead compartment. I always like to have my stuff on me. Always.

It was only a couple of minutes before a young woman approached me.

"Would you like anything, ma'am?"

She was a pretty, young girl, a ginger with dimples. Probably early twenties, at least, she probably would have had to be to have the stewardess job. Is that what they call them when it's on trains? Stewardesses? I'm surprised with all my private teaching and upbringing I never knew that one.

It wasn't strange to me at the time, but thinking back on it now, I realize this would be the last human I see for a very long time...

"Any kind of hard liquor is fine." I gave her a light nod before turning back to the window to continue watching my favorite program: nature. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. And no, this isn't the moment where I became an alcoholic. That was a long, long time ago.

"Ridin' into town?"

I was startled, and quickly turned around to see a blue-and-white cat person sitting across from me. His eyes were fucking huge and piercing red. I couldn't look away from them, despite how creepy they were. I was definitely going to have to get used to that. I really am envious of this part of me now. The ignorance was a present from god that I don't have the pleasure of unwrapping anymore.

I looked around and didn't see the train-attending girl anywhere, or even any of the other passengers, however little many there were. Just this cat man.

"Yeah, I've got big plans there." I gave him a smile. I used to do that, a lot. Back when I was young, hopeful and optimistic. Back when I wanted to be somebody, make something of myself and be remembered for carrying on my father's legacy. It was like I came right out of the beginning of a Fitzgerald novel.

"My name's Saturn, my friends call me Satty."

"Rover! Nice to meet ya!"

He shared my smile and a handshake. I giggled and blushed when I felt his furry paw. It was extremely soft, and I held on a little too long, before awkward pulling my hand away. He chuckled, and flashed a sharp, toothy grin. He decided to chat me up for a bit longer, before the stop arrived.

"I hear this is a new town? They haven't even gotten a mayor yet!"

"That's what I'm hear for." I took a sip of my drink, and Rover gasped a bit.

"You're the new mayor?! How exciting!"

He turn a bit to fumble with something in his seat. I was a bit taller than him, and I could see that it was a big pouch of some kind. As he rifled through his stuff, I saw his long, slinky tail. It was blue with a white, furry tip. It was a bit mesmerizing.

Before I could be more of a creep, he turned back and laid out a big map on the table. I could tell right away that it was a map of the tri-state area.

"Which one is it again?"

I only scanned the map a moment before I poked my finger to the paper, right over the town. The drawing had some houses, the lake to the left and a river down the middle.

"That's it."

He took the map from me, pretty hastily, nodding in agreement.

"Well, it looks like you're almost at your stop!" He turned to look out the window. I gave him something of a confused expression.

"You aren't getting off here?"

Rover looked down at this bag, and awkward chuckled. "No...."

There was a long pause in his voice. It was the most silent moment of my entire life.

"I won't be getting off any time soon."

I didn't know what to say to that. Luckily, he didn't give me the chance to think of something. He looked back up at me, and returned to his cheery state.

"Well, I wish you the best of luck, Satty! I really do. I think you'll be a great mayor."

I smiled and started to scoot out of the booth as the train slowed to a stop. I grabbed my bag and slung it over my shoulder.

"Cat's intuition."

He gave me a wink. I only just barely saw it, as my attention turned to the car doors sliding open, the bright sun glaring back at me.

For a long time, I would look back on this moment as being when I could have come back. I would see it as being the one chance I had to never step foot in this town and spare myself of everything I've experienced since. But now, I realize, I had no chance. I could never turn back.

I was doomed the moment I was born.

This town stinks. Stinks of blood. This town needs a saviour. A mayor.

Ordered a 3DS XL last night because they were on sale 28% off and AC:NL will probably be my first 3DS game. Haven't played Animal Crossing the one on the original DS so I'm really looking forward getting into the series again.

Oh, that's really cool.

I really hope you enjoy it! Once you get your 3DS we should all exchange friend codes.

I want this game but I wish I had an Xl to play it on. I was one of the unfortunate early adopters:(

I felt this exact same way a few weeks back, but this game was one of the reasons I rushed to upgrade to the XL. I've got the standard old blue one, but I've tried to spruce it up...

By trading in my regular 3DS I only had to pay around £40 for the XL. It's really worth it!

You'll be able to wear whatever as far as I know. I haven't heard any mentions of it being restricted.

There's a reason you're the mayor, but I'm not going to spoil it. It seems like one of the few things everyone doesn't know! :D
