We are two generations out from Shenmue 2 now. Two point five gens from 1. Before Sega hands Suzuki another blank check, they'll want to put out some feelers. Surely HD remasters would come before a new entry.

If this is real there's no way it is not an exclusive grabbed by one of the big three to increase their "hardcore" rep, unfortunately, so, pick your poison.
If I had to chose, realistically, and I have not played Shenmue ever, I would say MS is the one who grabbed it, they certainly don't mind throwing away money without careful consideration unlike Nintendo, and Sony would be a weird choice since they basically were the ones who bury it, and I don't see Sony throwing money away either.

I'm not convinced the original games will have aged well enough, even with HD remakes, to judge if it's worth putting out a new game. I think the only way many modern gamers are getting through the originals is getting hyped on the graphics and exploration potential from a new game's marketing bonanza. There will still have to be HD remakes, of course, but they'll be there to complement the marketing blitz, get people caught up, and hopefully help defray costs a touch.
In other words, if Sega (or whoever's bankrolling this) judges the viability of a part 3 by the sales and reception of HD remakes, they'll get a no, and I think Sega, Sony, and Nintendo know that. They have to either have the guts to dive in and do a part 3 or not bother.

I have to agree. I am a PC gamer, the last console I bought was an original Xbox, and my console days pretty much died with the death of the Dreamcast.
However, if any of the new consoles get Shenmue III as an exclusive, I will be buying it. I won't even care what lack of games the Wii U has, or what draconian DRM the Xbox One has, or whatever negative thing the PS4 has going for it too (I can't think of one right now), I'd buy the console that has Shenmue III without a second thought.
Unless the game sucked really hard of course.

Real talk now guys, if it was going to be anything, it'd be Ryo Hazuki DLC for Sonic All-Stars Racing: Transformed.
I think we've got a bigger chance of getting Shenmue I & II HD than an imminent Shenmue III announcement, and I think even that's unlikely.
