Is Microsot's arrogance blinding them like Sony was with $599?

I absolutely think so.

Just look at the kind of speeches they're doing.. Their position is clearly: "They'll pick us anyway".

SCEE CEO David Reeves: "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

That quote does come off as a bit arrogant, but I think there is some degree of truth to it.

Usually those first few million or so hardcore/dedicated buyers to the brand of a certain console or handheld are almost going to buy it at launch no matter under what conditions even if there are only a handful of attractive and exclusive games to appeal the masses (erm erm, Wii U).

However, the real trick a lot of the time is to attract more people who don't have that much dedication or loyalty to the brand after many of the hardcores have already jumped on in the first year or so.

Sony also made an unbelievably complicated to develop for system with the PS3, a mistake that Microsoft is not making with the Xbox One, which is easier to develop for than even the Xbox 360...

x86 CPU, 8GB unified memory, and a natural evolution of the EDRAM concept on the 360.

But keep trying your hardest to act like the two situations are identical.

Yes. Why are they so arrogant? I have no idea. Sony and Nintendo were at least incredibly dominant and successful when they got too cocky for their own. Whereas Microsoft rose to become equal competitors with the other two and suddenly they think their shit doesn't stink. It's amazing.

I do not understand how MS got arrogant. Sony dominated two gens resulting in their arrogance.....MS has come last every time. It baffles me honestly that they think they are market leaders.

Another thing you have to remember about Sony's arrogance is that even at $599 they were losing a substantial amount of money selling it. They weren't trying to harm the consumer, they wanted to give the highest quality product and overshot a bit. I know Microsoft had momentum after the success of the Xbox 360 but they have never really accomplished what Sony and Nintendo have in this industry. I hope they chart a more progressive path forward.

The parallels are massive:

-Misguided hardware
-Dripping arrogance
-Meandering presentation
-Forced console components (Blu Ray/Kinect)
-Focus on non-games (remember Afrika?)
-Appalling Communication/contradictory messaging
-Phil Harrison

Microsoft have become Sony circa 2006. Nintendo have become Sega circa 1998. Sony have become - well - I'm still figuring that one out. Something good though.

I think Sony's becoming Microsoft circa 2005. They're appealing to developers and gamers in a way their competition just can't.

Aren't they making a lot of money now? XBL Gold revenue for example.

Too early to call them arrogant IMO. They appear to at least be cognizant of the criticism post reveal, rather than pretending it doesn't exist.

Of course, if it comes out at for higher than $399 and those other "features" are still in effect, then yeah they'll deserve all the criticism they will undoubtedly receive. Even then though, they'll be able to make adjustments to correct that. Sony bounced back nicely after their "$599 and you'll feel lucky to own one at that price" attitude during the PS3 launch phase. And I think they're well positioned to take the lead back this upcoming gen.

What stinks is the overreaction to everything, even positive statements, that do nothing more than build excitement about E3. What the hell do people expect to say, "Come watch us suck at E3?"

That "Core gamers will buy anything" comment isn't helping them

I thought the comment was, "core gamers will buy everything."

It doesn't carry the same connotation as, "they will buy any old shit we throw out there," as some seem to imply. Maybe I read it wrong but it looked to me like they were saying something to the effect of: "hardcore gamers are going to buy both consoles" and that they were thinking they'd win over people who only plan to buy one.

It's still a stupid arrogant statement but changing the word "everything" to "anything" is a bit dishonest and only serves to stir up more outrage.

Did it actually come out? I thought it was a tech-demo that they showed (with zero actual gameplay) - I assumed it was just scrapped?

You betcha!

Fun game (if you enjoy riding/running around taking pictures of wildlife) that is still pretty easy on the eyes. :)

Not sure if they're arrogant. I do think they're trying to do to much...I think the focus should be on games but there is so much other things it's trying to do that they can easily lose sight of a certain aspect they're catering too...but fruck if I know I just want to wait a year or 2 thats when we'll really see some big changes..negative or positive...Hopefully positive.

Well we already watched them suck at the unveiling...

It will, GAF is scared to admit that.
again with this bullshit to make someone feel better, not sure who. But I'm fairly everyone is sure it will sell, like kinect... But useless for the demographics here. Like kinect.

ms knows marketing.

find me posts that this will fail with casuals and dudes. and be the doom of ms outside of super trolls.

cant say ive seen any threads, and im loving all this sad ms shit, that a majority is saying its going to be a financial mistake. again, kinect.

I spent $599 on November 17, 2006. I'm buying both PS4 and XB1 day one. I guess that makes me a bad gamer in the eyes of many here and only feed the arrogance of the machine. Was my $599 worth it? Damn right it was and still is, I can put a PS2 game in there and it works. I'm sure I'll find similar value with the new systems.

I don't think they're arrogant, but completely out of touch with gamers. That said, maybe they ARE in touch with what general consumer public wants. I don't pretend to know what that is, so maybe they are 100% on the ball, but going after a different demographic.

Im still convinced the drm/used game stuff is related to third party pressure, and not "arrogance". Third parties forced their hand .

I don't think MS is as arrogant as sony was at the start of the last generation. You don't see them making statements like "next gen starts when we say it does" or anything like that. much of the negativity comes from rumors and not getting a clear answer out of them.

$600 for a smartphone people do not complain.

$600 for a game / entertainment device is cheap.

I don't need an entertainment device but I do need a phone; necessity goes a long way to assuage the feeling like you're getting ripped off. Additionally, people do complain-- a lot-- about smartphone pricing, which is why you see providers offering loyalty plans where you can upgrade to that new model for nearly half, if not a third, of the MSRP.

Having read several books and articles about video game history, I can clearly say: Yes, it blinds them.

Historically, every former leader in the market became arrogant at some point, often costing them leadership in the next generation: Nintendo with the NES, Sony with the PS2->PS3 and now Microsoft with its Xbox 360.

Don't hate on that game man, we need more games like Afrika.

I've amended my post with clarification and happily stand corrected.

I honestly never knew it actually came out - I have a PS3 so maybe I'll check it out. I used it in my example as the first footage of it shown was some renders of animals - with no clue as to how the gameplay would actually unfold. It was - in its first appearance - a non-game to me. Clearly that subsequently changed.

They are testing to see what they can get away with. Honestly the negativity here is just the vocal minority and along with that comes hypocrisy. If you complain about Kinect being required but contributed to its success by buying one this gen then blame yourself. If you complain about anti-consumer practices but also at the same time were renewing your Gold account every year then blame yourself.

The sales numbers don't lie. The majority of consumers don't care about being crapped on as long as they are being entertained at the same time.

Um what?

That's their own fault, something Sony suffered back in 2006. Create a public perception that is so negative that it becomes incredibly difficult to generate any positive momentum. It'll take their best E3 conference yet to really turn it around and get some semblance of momentum.

You guys realize that the PS4 will fall victim to the same DRM schemes?

Sony has clearly stated that it's up to Publishers and we all know publishers will choose to have online activations.

If it was as simple as this, then Microsoft wouldn't have decided to do it themselves. Why bother if you can leave it up to the publishers to maintain their own servers to attempt to force online functionality? Are publishers going to pony up for server resources to maintain constant connections since Sony isn't offering it to them? Maybe for bigger titles, but every game? But if your console maker does it for you and pays for it with all the earned revenue from Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, then it's win/win for Microsoft and the Publishers.

Then-SCEE CEO David Reeves: "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

He was right. The PS3 was sold out at launch in a lot of territories and their software line up was utter shit the entire first year it was out on the market.

Microsoft's arrogance is extremely puzzling to me. At least Sony had two record breaking consoles and over 10 years of market dominance to justify their extreme arrogance. The 360 is ultimately going to come in last place to one console that basically quit selling in 2010 and another console that started off at $599.
