Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

The only analysis we need:

Figure 8's for you jive turkeys!

I fucking love that after-image effect. Absolutely fucking love it.

Looks great, a nice mix of xtreme and galaxy. Hopefully as more information pours out, it keeps on looking amazing.

A hardcore Sonic fan friend of mine lent me Generations, insisting it was good. I found a lot of things about it annoying and overall found the game to just be okay. I had always liked Sonic (particularly 2 and 3, and the first Adventure), but stopped playing them at all after Heroes (which I only rented after having previously bought SA 1 and 2). I also loved Rush on DS, and thought Advance was pretty good.

So, I'm coming from that perspective when I say that this looks awesome.

No way this is an open world game. Sonic needs long straight lines to run across. And the levels are made of floating squares, for god's sake...

I would like to see it in-game but atm it's the only thing I don't really like.

It's not like he isn't going fast at other times when it isn't shown, it just seems to appear a bit randomly in the trailer? And not all that smooth either (plus cuts off abruptly). Clone images might be slightly too opaque as well.

Hopefully they'll add some more finishing touches to it up by the time it's out because I do want it in game.

Surely that is a PC screenshot btw?

This is a huge stretch, but do you think Arzest (Ohshima) could be involved? Considering Arzest worked with Nintendo on Wii Play Motion and Mii Plaza, perhaps he could've been recruited for this.

I ask because the badniks are so classic in their design where they weren't in Gens or even Sonic 4, and wasn't Ohshima character designer on everyone in the original?

I'd have a heart attack if two out of the original three (Naka being 3rd) were on this. O_o

I'm pretty sure the wisp in this trailer is laser, not a plain wisp. It looks like laser and it probably goes with the blue diamonds. Hopefully plain wisps aren't in the game, because fuck boost. There are too many speedboosters as it is.

Wisps are a bit disconcerting to me, because they get overused.

Omg, Wisps in this game make me a lot more excited for it.

It sucks that the Wisps in Generations didn't do a good job representing how fun they were in both Colors games.

Yeah, Generations did a real lazy job with the Wisps. It felt too gimmicky to be interesting.

Wisps in Sonic Generations aside from Rocket, were like the antithesis of what they were in Colors. Classic Sonic Spikes, ugh. . .

I really need to catch up on my Sonic before this comes out. Sonic 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic Adventure 2 should do the trick, no?
No, never. I'd almost recommend SA2 over this clusterf*ck, which I also won't. Head over to youtube and listen to the OST, the only redeeming aspect of Sonic CD. I'd say catching up with Sonic 2, Colors and Generations is more worth your time.

Yet again, open world does not mean a big empty open area.

Although I don't expect the level design to be any less linear than Generations, I thought I should make that distinction again.

Or Hirokazu Yasuhara.. because he is now working with Nintendo..

Why doesn't this game look like this with even more finesse from the WiiU additional power? ugh, so underwhelming. I hope this also isn't the graphical standard we can expect from 3D Mario :/ Even though they will surely have a superior artstyle to what is shown here, but I really just finally want some 1st party games that feel like that they don't belong on the goddamn original Wii. And I'm already sick of waiting. X is probably like 2 years away too :((

The new sonic game seems to be looking better than that game in my opinion. The reason I hate realistic sonic games like that is because it further proves that 3D sonic games dont have a standard style, or a set universe. They don't feel like sonic. Lost Words seems to finally be going back to a universe that feels more like "Sonic".

This is making me want less.
:(

Ah, I see... I won't mind if they pull it right. I like how it was handled in Colors for the most part.

Also, any idea if Iizuka is heavily involved with this?

I imagine that the Wisps will play a smaller role this time around, both in gameplay and story. Surely the trailer would have made a bigger deal (or any kind of deal) around them considering the amount of fans that Colours has.

Exactly. Those other recent games had a decent art direction, but they didn't have the same feeling I associate with Sonic. This game does so far, it looks exactly how I would have imagined Sonic 1-3 in 3D.

Yep, already explained how it's so similar to his past Sonic and even non-Sonic works, it just fits so well.

That would be interesting...

He's really the actual "game designer" behind the original sonic games right?

According to wikipedia he actually works for nintendo now, although it doesn't mention what capacity.

True. It was a cancelled and somewhat forgotten title after all.

Though I really hate when people say "ripoff" as if it's a bad thing to have anything remotely similar.

To me it looks like a mash up of the two concepts. Sonic Xtreme always looked to be more of a vertical experience (based on footage I've seen) and Galaxy obviously had a mixture of different sized planetoids for Mario to move from and the obvious effects of gravity from it.

This looks like the gravity aspect is gone but they kept the multiple planetoid concept so worlds aren't just one long stretch for Sonic to cruise down. Based on the trailer everything definitely keeps that cylinder look from Xtreme.

Curious to find out how much of a role Nintendo has played during this game's development.

3D Marios always look amazing for the hardware it's on. I wouldn't expect less for Mario Wii U. Don't worry. :)

Super Sonic Galaxy, all right. Pretty cool. I think it's a nice touch that Sonic must save those animals as in the first Sonic game.

I remember when Galaxy was first shown, people were actually saying it reminded them of the Sonic Xtreme concept.

Yep, I think he directed the originals, but afterward he was a Lead/Game Designer then onwards.

So maybe he's back to directing, or at least doing levels or even as said as Lead Game Designer, which I think is pretty close to directing, he would have the game in his hands basically.

Was hoping this might look great and give us a good idea as to how much more improved Mario may look on the console.

Can't say I am impressed. Although I'd say this is good indication that Wii U Mario won't be a Galaxy follow-up - Nintendo is probably happy to let Sonic do something with the concept whilst they take Mario in another direction.

I agree 100% This one feels more classic than Sonic 4 or Generation.. I love the pure classic look..

good to see that I'm not the only one. the infinite gif from lost world looks great to me. so colorful and toy-ish

I thought that as well the first time I saw Galaxy but the final product felt like they went in a completely different direction from the fish-eye lens concept from Xtreme.

Very interesting to see SEGA returning to it though, wonder if they have plans to revive any other older ideas that didn't quite work out?

Just had a thought.

If Yasuhara is behind this... who's to say this isn't by NST?

Sonic Team would obviously be helping, but I don't know, it'd make sense also due to the graphics being not as good as Gens which used the Hedgehog Engine and the like, and naturally NST would not have had HD experience prior.

Would ensure 60fps, as Nintendo always strives for it when appropriate, it'd be so here.
