Sonic Lost Worlds Debut Trailer [Up: Wii U + 3DS screenshots]

The Sonic cycle has been broken since Generations (and arguably since Colors)!

It certainly seems that way, doesn't it? If these games end up being good, I think I'd personally find Sonic being relevant again more surprising than just about anything else that could happen next gen. I'm setting my geekometer to cautiously optimistic for now.

I see blue skies. They mentioned Red Rings so there has got to be S-ranks to earn. All I gotta know now is how jazz-tacular the music's gonna be. Better be that Sonic Colors composer. Need me some more Planet Wisp Act 1 & Aquarium Park Act 1 up in this piece.

Damn right, Aquarium Park is top level Sonic music. I hope the stage settings set the basis for some unique sounding music tracks, the locations are one of the things that I think really helped Colours soundtrack stand out if that makes any sense.

I looks like they didn't port the Hedgehog Engine over to Wii U since I don't see any of its advanced lighting and graphics in the preview. I'm assuming they just updated their Colors engine. That kinda sucks. The Hedgehog Engine was IMO the most beautiful of the current gen.

did anyone else think

at the start ? :D

Sonic team needs to make a new billy hatcher and stop making lame sonic games

Colors broke the cycle, and Generations apparently kept the momentum going.

I'm pretty sure Sonic's days of being shit soup are over. Sega and Sonic Team have a better grasp on how to deliver high-quality Sonic experiences now.

Haven't played either of those hopefully this game is as good as those ones still pretty optimistic

The bosses look like they're essentially set up to be easily animated in Flash in 2D for a potential cartoon

That's what their design looks like to me. Flash animation converted to 3D

Aside from some... questionable boss fights, and some maddening side missions involving Wisps, Generations was SUPERB. Play it at 60 fps on PC with all setting cranked up. My mind melted.

The tiered movement system being introduced in Lost World more or less addresses the one control issue with Generations, which was how finicky and imprecise it could be negotiating tricky platforms when your character's tendency is to blast forward at the slightest touch.

Also, put me in the camp that really digs the Lost World art style. It's not as "textured" as Generations, but as others have mentioned, the crisp clear design makes all of the elements POP off the screen. And really, I just love the repetition of patterns -- the spirals and checkers and slanted planks of wood all add up to create something you want to -run- on and -jump- off. An inviting platform paradise, if you would.

Really eager to hear some hands-on impressions now.

Nintendo fan ever since the early 90's, always been really anti Sonic and Sega but man does this look great. I'm actually excited to play this.

Please for the love of god don't let this be me getting sucked into the Sonic Cycle, please.

Agree with all of the bold. Everyone knows Time Eater is horseshit and man Sonic vs Shadow was disappointing. But still the game is unbelievably fun. I still fire it up to play Crisis City Modern a lot. Crisis City, playable and fun? What is this heresy!

I wonder if the cylinder-shaped levels will have a F-Zero GX Fire Field-esque feel to them, with the game's gravity stopping you falling off at high speed. As well, I hope there's more platforming than high speed 'autopilot' running with boosters dotted around correcting your course. Looks promising though!

Damn, now I feel like firing up Generations. But after seeing Lost World, it's sort of not the same haha. I still think Green Hill is the best level in the entire game (both Classic and Modern)

I enjoy Green Hill, dat nostalgia. But I'm a Sonic 2 guy, first video game I ever played. So Chemical Plant was just. . .

Hell, Green Hill Zone with Emerald Hill Zone music gives me so many feels.

You'll be happy to hear IGN confirmed it's playable at e3.

My favorite Generations level was the Modern Sonic level where you're in the Akira-esque city at night running down the side of glass skyscrapers while flying police robots chase you, and then you crash straight through the skylights of some multi-level hotel, landing in the lobby and blasting out the front doors like a boss. I had to pause the game at that point, vacuum up my melted brain and store it in the freezer for a bit so it could solidify again.

I missed Generations, would it be worth my time to pick it up on PS3? (I don't have a good PC)

Speed Highway.

Actually honestly the whole game was great. All the way up to Planet Wisp, anyway.

Why they decided to opt out a lush, HD grassy field in favor of a gimmicky mechanical factory is beyond me...

I think the game looks beautiful, but what the hell is with the camera angles? Are those used during game play? Seems like it would be borderline unplayable when it's 4 inches from Sonic's face as he runs TOWARDS the camera..

Less trying to make the game "xtreme", more playable please!

They ruined the Wisp mechanics as well. Planet Wisp was really the only truly disappointing stage in Generations IMO, its the one I don't tend to go back and play

I haven't played the PS3 version. Is there a demo available? Maybe you should try that first. But I'd imagine that even at a lesser framerate, the game would still be fun. The levels, for the most part, have a good flow to them. Very dynamic, with great variety thanks to the premise of pulling levels from various Sonic games and re-imagining them in both Modern and Classic incarnations.

Speaking of which, the Classic version of Escape from the City is amazing. I might have the name wrong, but I believe that's the first stage from Sonic Adventure 2, with the truck chasing you. Playing a 2D sidescrolling version of that, with a truck that moves in and out of the background and topples the obstacles you're platforming across, was simply inspired.

Okay, here's my theory on the game's story....

Sick of constantly being defeated by Sonic in his conquest to control planet......whatever, Dr. Eggman finds a way to make his own planet by stealing sections from other worlds and creating a new planet around that including Sonic's main residence, the Green Hill zone and Planet Wisp. Only problem is that gravity is messed up. That's why certain parts of the land are in the air and all twisted like a pretzel.

In earlier previews, the six were mentioned as guardians. Maybe they are guardians of the galaxy (not the kind with a gun-toting raccoon) and they are tricked by Eggman into believing Sonic's responsible ALA Sonic 3.

That's my theory anyway.

Iizuka has a MAJOR hardon for man-made environments. Just having Green Hill in Generations probably made him violently ill. I'm amazed this game looks like it will feature mostly natural environments. A good mix is best, but we're at a serious deficit after the last several games featured man-made environments almost exclusively.

Hahaha. I enjoy Aquarium Park, but that wasn't even my favorite track from that game, so I never got the praise. I liked Asteroid Coaster 2&3 and Sweet Mountain Act 2 more actually.
No, no. It's just that not every Sonic game has a great soundtrack, as... Beef... demonstrated... -_-

And because this is an educational experience...

The music is awful. At first I thought some people were exaggerating, but man… Playing the game with the music in-context didn’t improve it at all. How the hell is this a remix of this? I heard they ran into problems with the soundtrack prior to release—and that could be a rumour—but man, I know they can do better than that.

More wonderful gems from the Sonic Chronicles soundtrack:
Green Hill Zone
Central City
Metropolis
Kron Colony
Battle Theme 1
Angel Island
Blue Ridge

Top Bottom
