From what little I watched in the show the girl characters are like in 9th grade and the guy is like in the 11. So its kind of just teen age hormones, the show. There are bunches of shows like that in and out of japan.
Hell persona 4 is a great rpg but the protag screws everyone and almost yosuke.
It doesn't need defending, people wanna but their cartoon game, let em. It aint none of my business, and it damn sure shouldn't be none of your business.

At what point does "the opening" actually end? I took the opening as her being at her old school and being left by everyone except for her grandfather.

The opening ends when the anime OP begins and serves to remind people that the show's all about comedy fun times. I wanted a dark and depressing tale of a girl with psychic powers rejected by her peers.
The "It's just drawings" argument is dumb as fuck. There's still legal punishment for drawn child pornography.
