Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

Are you fucking kidding me? I have been on GAF since 2000
Haha. Just a joke. I was referring to bish quoting you some days back and posting something like "Oh Dopey..." so I thought there may be a little bit of history there I don't know about ;)

Not accusing you don't worry. And I knew you would show up :D

That's one way to spin it.

The other is that the non-gaming resources have eaten into a massive chuck of the already limited resources that should be all for gaming. Sure, they use less than half, so are a minority, but still!

10% GPU, 25% CPU and a massive 37.5% RAM of the entire consoles resources are dedicated to non-gaming applications. That's a huge amount taken away from games, no matter how you try to spin it.

I agree.

Cup half full. Cup half empty.

So if MS shows off more games at E3 than Sony, you'll embrace Microsoft?

Microsoft is trying to expand their userbase, not replace it. It's a smart thing to do. As long as they get all the 3rd party games, maybe an exclusive or two, and put out a decent amount of first party games... why should you care if Joe SixPack is waving his arms at his TV while he checks out his fantasy football league?

Assuming of course, Sony pulls the same DRM crap.

they assume core games will buy the 720 regardless which is why they are doing it this way. while sony is focusing on the gamers right now and will expand later. either way we'll see what happens in a few years.

Why are people surprise about hired shrills working on NeoGAF? Given NeoGAF's prominence, I'd think it would be weird if we didn't have shrills working here.

An easy way for the GAF admins to stop this would be have each potential new member have a phone interview. If they have a squeaky voice, no account for them!

My issue is ms did similar with 360. They will try to appeal to core gamers at launch then casuals later

lol.

I would be nervous being interviewed by Bishoptl, I'd sound shrill.

I'm talking about now. MS has 5 for games and Sony has 7 for games.

One thing before it spreads as true information: Sony has yet to confirm how much they're reserving for the OS and given the prior rumour of 512MB when the overall amount of 4GB, the 1GB figure is a current extrapolation based of possibly expanded feature set and future proofing requirement and is no way indicative of the true number.

That said, given PS4 will not be running 3 OSs, it will be less than Xbone has reserved for non-gaming functions.

Seems like few Xbone fans are hurt...

If you don't support all features then customers will look for other options one of which is competitors' consoles. Would be very stupid not to do that.

Big difference is what the focus is. For MS, all anti-consumer features are top priorities because if people fall for it, it is easy and continuous stream of money as compared to games. Looking back at 360, I'm sure they feel they can go for it.

Sony is focusing on games first and then on other features so their customers have less reason to look for other consoles.

After their reveal, the quotes in the OP doesn't surprise me. Of course they're gonna target the gamer first and foremost.

Now on to important matters; bishoptl, please pull the trigger and blow them up on gaf. Would be great entertainment.

Hey, would anybody be interested in a thread where I detail some of the social agency email addresses that have come up during my offsite research into some of our more recently vocal members?

It's fascinating.

We won't be able to handle it. We can't handle the truth, we'd always suspect after such a thread and things will never be the same. Ignorance is bliss, people that have to deal with knowing are the ones that get the raw deal. Like mods having to mod spoiler threads when they have to spoil themselves.

You're an idiot.

Lol, what the hell?
Hey now don't start randomly accusing people.

What makes you think it will only play games? The ps3 already does all this stuff you listed. Of course the ps4 will. Sony is simply pointing out, rightly, that you can't sell a games console on things like netflix, youtube, skype, etc. since there are plenty of much cheaper and more mobile devices that can do all of that.

A console's only reason to exist is to play games. If you don't get that part right, it won't sell.

Pretty much. Consumers can pay 99 bucks for a Apple TV. People won't shell out 4-500 for something that just does Netflix and TV.

A PC is not a games machine first, it still has the broadest range of games with extra features and cheapest prices. I don't care if a machine has 1000 features above playing games if it plays games well and has a great selection.

Excellent point and creepy as hell avatar lol

I think it's clear what MS' focus is when they dedicate 3 GB of RAM and 2 cores to non-gaming functions.

Again, had Sony not dropped the bomb on everyone at their unveiling, Microsoft's plan wouldn't have looked as bad. Microsoft got caught with their pants down. Sony made a wise move and now Microsoft is paying the price. That's hardly an indicator of what their clear focus was.

Yes, but each company decided what to unveil first and how to do it.

The first detailed message Sony unveiled was: "we want a machine that's easy and powerful to develop for".

The first detailed message of Microsoft was "Xbox television".

People judge what they see, as always. If Microsoft has an amazing E3, the tone will probably change.

See it's all about hindsight here. Before they unveiled, I kept wondering why they were doing this so close to E3 and not just getting the spotlight there. During the conference it became obvious to me that they were going to split their announcement up and in the past, the stuff announced at the unveiling gets a lot of shit at E3 from people so before the backlash, it's not unreasonable that one could think that they should show all this stuff here, tease a few games, and then focus more on games. They also gamble that maybe Sony will talk more about services at E3 given they haven't yet and they have to at some point. So they could steal the show at E3 if they were completely focused on games. It's not always about the first impression, but in this case it's about the last impression before launch. So a big focus on games gets people forgetting all the other crap. It's easy to see how this strategy could develop and it backfired on them a bit.

Like you said that tone can change and my stance is it's too early to form an opinion without all the info. It's silly not to.

Yes, because everyone thought 8GB GDDR5 was batshit insane.

Devs did prefer 4GB GDDR5 over 8GB DDR3 which is slow as shit. I don't remember where I read this, but even knowledgeable people on GAF agreed that MS' solution was inferior for games.

I don't know how to make this more clear. Even MS admits around 4GB is enough for next gen games, but instead of going with GDDR5 they had to go with slow as shit DDR3 in order to get 8GB. So they could deliver all these non-gaming features. Obviously gaming was not the top priority when designing the system.

I'd like to see the source for devs preferring 4GB GDDR5 over 8GB DDR3. If it's a common feeling, it should be easy to find numerous sources saying similar opinions on it. It's not unreasonable to think the gamble for more but slower memory is something that could pay off. RAM is always a precious resource and you can never have too much of it in something like games.

At this point there is so much rhetoric and diatribe flying all over the place it is getting ridiculous.

Has there ever been this much posturing in advance of an E3 event??

These guys need to just drop it unless they have something truly exciting to state.

Just let the events happen and let us decide what is what.

At least Sony is keeping its comments to reasonable levels though and they aren't going down the pompous and pretentious M$ route of "WE WILL PWN ALL AT E3 AND YOU WILL BEG US TO SELL YOU AN XBONE BITCHES!". Truly pathetic!

Sony's certainly playing their PR right. People are buying into the image of them saving gaming. Waiting for the used game thing to play out to see if this does a 180.

When the other 5 GB are dedicated to gaming, yes it is quite clear where their focus is.

We come from the precedent that the whole hardware is dedicated to gaming. The Xbox One is making the precedent that 3/8 of the RAM/, 1/4 of the CPU, and 1/10 of the GPU are dedicated to non-gaming. That is a tremendous amount of hardware set aside for a gaming console. It does introduce limitations to games.

Bish: 'So, you looking forward to that new Mirror's Edge game?''

  • 'Best game of last gen, from the best publisher!' = Ban

  • 'Fucking moneyhats, dude! Piece of shit game anyways' = Ban

  • 'A game with that kind of content can only be experienced with Kinect!' = Ban

  • 'It's gonna be on Steam, right?' = Gaf Gold account

Dont tease us like this. Now we have to see this thread.

I have also noticed an influx of very passionate juniors lately. As well as a few older and little used accounts that have suddenly become very active.

Isn't that what the email requirement is for? To weed out the viral marketers, spammers and such?

Sure, but it's a numbers game, too. The sheer number of new applicants that apply for NeoGAF everyday means some shrills will slip through. The alternative would be to check applicant-by-applicant, which isn't even an option as I'd imagine that would require a massive time commitment.

Sony hasn't though. They've sorta teased it. My thoughts is it's going to be up to the developer to use but Sony won't use it for first party titles. So it'll exist, but not required.

So basically the same as it is now? I'd be okay with that. Of course, that still hinges entirely on Sony announcing games that would make me want to buy the damn thing. inFamous alone won't do it for me this time.

This is my view, too.

Just like DRM and region locking on the PS3. Sony haven't said no in the couple of occasions when publishers have wanted to implement it.

Not at all. two other os's and 3 gigs of ram is for the non gaming stuff. If they were really serious then it would be 1 os and most of the ram for gaming and only about 1 gig for the os.
If that was really serious they'd offer a titan or 7990 GPU. Unfortunately neither are serious times have changed top of the line GPUs aren't realistic
