Sony CEO Kaz Hirai: PS4 is first and foremost a game console

Such a lame attempt at damage control because Microsoft ate their lunch at presenting something exciting that moves the market past that dwindling market of "hardcore gamers".

Sony, you need to move past these lame attempts at copying what made the other guys successful with your horrible knockoffs and come up with something original and exciting because flops aren't going to save you.

E3 will be telling because few journalist will give a damn about covering a prettier fps from Sony when Microsoft is bringing that truly next gen tech that will move the platform past its male dominated hardcore roots. It will be the Wii all over again in terms of getting attention from the masses.

"100% logic failure rate"

Your sig describes perfectly how I feel about your post.

It's interesting to see how many in here seems to believe Kaz just like that!

Hmm, guess we'll see whether he's...well, Sony, really serious about it or if this is just empty buzzwords stuff all over again.

Let's try to bring the thread back on track a little. Regarding the comments by Hirai, does anyone think this could backfire in the wider market? People are often looking for something that does everything and with Sony positioning the PS4 as a gaming console first and foremost, could it end up suffering against the more multimedia One?

I doubt it will bomb like the Wii U, but I could see a scenario where people look at both on the shelf, think to themselves that One does all this extra stuff and has a lot of the same games and is available for the same price...

Not really, since like the WiiU, the Xbox One seems to be catering to a market need of five years ago.

Live TV is dying. Shows are more frequently and easily consumed in on demand chunks via hulu, netflix, HBO GO, etc than Live. That is, TV consumption is moving away from the TV, and "cord cutting" is becoming more and more common. Sports are the exception, but who is going to be flipping between call of duty and the superbowl?

Everything the Xbox One seems positioned to do is better done using an ipad or smartphone. Do I really need the xbox to switch between surfing the internet and playing a game, or using live tv? no, i can use my smartphone or tablet for that for a better experience, and those things are ubiquitious.

If the performance between it and the PS4 were identical, it would just be extras and come down to the games- but all indications are that the Xbox One has sacrificed hardware capabilities to push functions no one was really clamoring for.

not for the first 12 months, I think the message is spot on. They'll update that as the price comes down and they want to start widening the audience.

Never have I seen a tag and post go so well together. You are aware that the Xbox is significantly weaker than the PS4 no?

Thanks for popping up in the very thread where Bish mentioned you folks.

They need to market the PS4 as a next gen media device capable of running next gen media delivery systems (apps) including their own Sony Entertainment Network (SEN). E3 is not the place for this really though I could see them inviting Netflix presenting some kind of collaboration. What they need to market is that PS4 is an easy platform to develop media delivery apps for and that people can expect the PS4 to be a platform that will have these kinds of content delivery apps. This kind of marketing is better done through advertising and controlled media appearances from autumn and forwards. 30 minutes coverage of this segment at E3 will be enough to satisfy general media and not bore them.

The first six months the core target group will market the PS4 as well. Then it is time for a price cut and marketing push towards the general public with a large enough game and app library to make the PS4 appealing for the general public.

I see what Apple might do with the next gen Apple TV box as the biggest risk in regards to the general public, not the Xbox One. I expect next gen Apple TV to cost 99-199$, maybe a high spec SKU at 299$. The Xbox One cannot compete against that if Apple allows the next Apple TV to have apps and not be as gimped as it is now.
Apple will not make a TV, that is stupid and will be a giant failure.

Holy shit. I think we finally have a successor to the "... Just shot themselves in the foot/I'm an expert" meme!

Wait what? people look for $400 boxes to watch tv they already have and netflix they already have?.

I don't think the Xbox One is going to appeal to the masses in the same way the Wii did because it doesn't offer them anything new that they don't already have.

Besides potentially some of its exclusive games, there's really nothing compelling which is going to attract people to buy it. Most of those features implemented in order to attract wider audiences really aren't enough to justify a £400+ purchase.

Exactly. Never forget that this forum is quite clueless when it comes to prognosticating about what will be successful in the wide market. They chose the Move over the Kinect, the Ps3 over the Wii and the 360 and they hyped up the underperforming vita. They laugh and sneer until the mass market shows how clueless they are. We'll see this holiday season. Judging by the guy's reactions here, you would think that the One will struggle to sell any consoles this holiday season. My gut tells me the usual suspects will be wrong again.

Wait what? people look for $400 boxes to watch tv they already have and netflix they already have?.

Apparently. Not only that but they will also pay £50 per year to watch Netflix on their £399 box vs a £149 that has unrestricted access.

If Microsoft are going to sell this on non-gaming features then they need to consider a very low price point because people looking for these features can buy a PS3, AppleTV, GoogleTV, Roku, and a plethora of Android TV sticks, all for under £150.

Not this shit again, they also thought the vita would bomb, the wii u would bomb, the ps3 was over priced. Such bs when someone posts this kind of dumb shit.

Wait what? people look for $400 boxes to watch tv they already have and netflix they already have?.

If you think that's all the One does, then you're obviously aren't paying attention. But something tells me you know very well what the One can do and you're placing your head in the sand.

Its bonkers, i see the tv stuff as a nice side feature for us the gamer, but for selling an expensive box at launch to the general market? hell no as you say there are a plethora of cheaper device that offer these features.

I think the casuals that migrated to the xbox 360 was mainly because of the high initial price of the ps3. If the ps4 is priced more competitively and has more focus on games then I'm sure most of those gamers will flock back to the playstation brand which they probably supported in the ps2 era.

And none of those devices can come close to what the One can do with the tech it has.

If you think that's all the One does, then you're obviously aren't paying attention. But something tells me you know very well what the One can do and you're placing your head in the sand.

What does it do then, you NEED a Pvr to use live tv, you Need netflix that you already have what else does it do. Please dont say you wave at your tv and talk, tvs are coming with that built in now that isnt exclusive to xbox.

And none of those devices can come close to what the One can do with the tech it has.

They are good enough and cost £149 (or less) vs £399.

That's what buyers in these markets care about. Good enough. People who want media features care about good enough, that's all they care about. Sony found out this fact in 2006.

I think MS saw the massive success of Google TV and wanted a piece of it.

Wait what? people look for $400 boxes to watch tv they already have and netflix they already have?.

That wasn't what I was suggesting. I was asking could the additional features see One be the more attractive proposition when it comes to the holidays and beyond in the wider market.

People, more then ever, are looking to get more 'bang for their buck', so when you have two consoles and one offers all these extra features, etc will it be more appealing to those who are looking for something that does more than just play games?

Don't misunderstand, games are very important, I was approaching this from a could the focus on solely gaming see the PS4 suffer during the holidays and beyond in the wider market.

The gaming message is great for us and those who only intend to play games, but there's a percentage of people who expect more from their console. I suppose it ties into my somewhat personal belief that the market has shifted to one where the wider market expects more of a multimedia box that plays game rather than a games console that offers multimedia features.

It's semantics, but it's something that could be a factor. I'm not saying it will or won't, I'm just throwing this out there to see what people's thoughts and opinions are.

And none of those devices can come close to what the One can do with the tech it has.

in europe at least, the majority of live TV viewers use the built in tuner on their TV - which is now DTT. That is entirely unsupported by Xbox One as you need a box to connect to it.

Its bonkers, i see the tv stuff as a nice side feature for us the gamer, but for selling an expensive box at launch to the general market? hell no as you say there are a plethora of cheaper device that offer these features.

So do you think the Xbox One will have trouble selling this holiday season. Let's hear a prediction of how much more the ps4 will sell in comparison to the One now that the ps4 is focused on gaming </massive rolleyes>?

no blueray bullshit and insane price this time around, and I'll skip xbox to go straight to playstation without any problem

And none of those devices can come close to what the One can do with the tech it has.

Features and requirements are under development and may change prior to release. Available features and content may vary by country. Broadband internet (ISP fees apply) and advanced TV hardware required.
1. Supported television tuner or cable/satellite set top box with HDMI output and HDMI cable required (all sold separately).
Xbox One's Live TV service will only be available in the United States at launch,

Viral marketers just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about online forums (I'm an expert), but deniability and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in 4chan where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in NeoGAF, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is animated gifs.

What this means is the Off-Topic Forum, after hearing about this, is not going to want to engage in pointless discussion for either topic, nor will they purchase any of your employer's fine products. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but viral marketers have alienated an entire market with this move.

Viral marketers, publicly apologize and cancel your pre-console war campaign or you can kiss your business goodbye.

They should do what they are doing with Indies and expand the delevoper friendly focus they are focussed on from games to apps. Just provide a a nice framework for it. Let people selfpublish apps. There is no need to invest huge sums, just let thirdparties do it and keep the focus on games.

The streaming apps like netflix will come anyways. Would be cool if there would be mediacenter apps like Plex and so on.

If there is a userbase and developing/publishing is easy and cheap enough, apps will come. No need to build a apps on their own, besides some Bravia/Xperia crossover stuff to push their own products.

nothing that the xbox1 showed is a must-get.

show me a feature that everyone is raving about.

The media is raving about all of the features of the Kinect 2.0. Try leaving gaf for awhile. Its features are definitely getting a lot more write up than anything from the ps4 reveal. People have even forgotten about Sony and are writing about how can apple hope of competing with it. That's incredible when the media says Apple has to catch up to anyone.

Certainly not the media where I live, I've read plenty of articles very critical of the Xbone in the mainstream press. It doesn't seem like most journalists are all that dazzled by the promises of Kinect, especially after version 1.0 failed to deliver on most of its promises.

in europe at least, the majority of live TV viewers use the built in tuner on their TV - which is now DTT. That is entirely unsupported by Xbox One as you need a box to connect to it.

This is very true and another reason why compromising the core functionality of the system for broadcast TV (weak performance of the Xbone) is why the system is so uninteresting to me. DVB-C/T (and also S in more upscale TVs) are very common. And even with people that use their own receivers, Microsoft will not be able to create a seamless interface considering the myriad of different makes and models of receivers that are out there.

Gaf needs to move half The Xbox one talk to a new AV section, I'm sick of hearing about TV and other functions. Let's hope E3 brings it back on track.

Thank you! Someone who gets it. Gaming of course is important but its a shrinking market and consumers need to see a massive difference in graphic quality to choose one console over the other when they share 90% of the games. So you have one player, Sony, who says we're just focused on games and we'll consider all that other stuff later after launch and you have this other player, Microsoft, who will be advertising all the cool things you can do with Kinect in terms of controlling your entertainment i.e. music, movies, etc. which is massively more popular with the mass market than playing games.

I'm predicting Microsoft wins that battle.

this is a good idea. I wonder if they can reach out to android developers for that? I think its almost guaranteed that MS will push windows 8 apps onto Xbox one so Sony may need to counter that.

While I appreciate the sentiment being thrown our way, anyone who fully believes this is a fool.

You don't sell 80 million consoles to core gamers. You sell your launch window limited supply to core gamers. You sell a majority of first-year boxes to core gamers. And then you don't. For the next ten years.

Hell, I and at least a dozen people I know bought our PS3 initially because it was a good Blu-Ray player that ALSO played games. I likely would never have bought one as early as I did for solely the games, because I couldn't justify the expense of two consoles otherwise, and I'm a Halo nerd, so my decision was already made.

I'm glad I bought a PS3 and ended up gaming on it for more than work a lot more than I thought I would, but it honestly wasn't for the games. And Blu-Ray is one of the reasons PS3 survived the lean early part of the gen as well as it did. Dismissing non-gaming capabilities is disingenuous and foolhardy.

Top Bottom
