Is Atlus going to have a strong showing at E3?

I started on SMT 2 and when I eventually played Persona 1, I was shocked how much of a step back it seemed like. It needed to exist, of course, but it is a dull game full of dull characters.

SMTII's aren't exactly full of life. Heck, most of them
die or become demons.

At least Persona 1 has Ayase.

If JYB was in the next Trauma game.

Will you like it Aeana?

For what it's worth, I don't consider P3 to be "innovative" either. It's fun, though.

But Persona 1 is good too. randomkid will back me up. The only two Persona 1 fans in the world.

Yeah, I don't think the word "innovation" should be used for anything in the Persona series either.

I wonder how my opinion of Persona 1 would've been had I known SMT existed at the time. There were no RPGs besides P1 at the time with modern-day students using guns and swords in schools and demon infested cities(that I knew of anyway).

I love Persona 1, but couldn't make myself play the PSP version with the new music.

Yeah, but it was all new and exciting to me, the charming and talking to demons. By the time I played Persona 1 it was like 'yeah I did this.'

Plus, I like the old school SMT sprite designs a LOT more than the ones they used in Persona 1. I wish they'd do an HD version of those old games.

The benefits of having a Japanese friend whose dad constantly brought home tapes. I remember him telling me 'It's like Phantasy Star except you get pets.' Little did I know...

It did have the infamous "Mark Danced Crazy". Shudder.

All we need now is someone to post about how persecuted P1/2 are and we've got ourselves an SMT™ thread!

It's true, when it comes to Persona threads on GAF, the first thing that comes to mind is throngs of people getting upset about the lack of praise for Persona 1.

Also I may or may not have a Google Doc with a half-finished IMPORTANT ESSAY on how awesome and groundbreaking (in North America!) P1 actually is that will SILENCE ALL THE HATERZ, shut up, this doesn't prove anything.

Edit: Jesus this thread is fast haha.

I assume you know those aren't from any of the old games. They're IV's done in II's style.

But hey, there's always Soul Hackers.

Admittedly reading a bit of the story can show why it was novel at the time even if the gameplay was kind of a slog. We've got more options now if we want crazy stories from Japan though, like almost every other MegaTen released here.

I know that. It's why I was lamenting a lack of an HD SMT II.

Soul Hackers has more of the early DeSu art style for the monsters though. The simplicity/pixelated look of the old SMT sprites was really cool to me. I wouldn't want to get rid of the others either, but I like both.

Lets be brutally honest here. Persona is as popular as it is today because of P3 and P4 and I would say that it makes good sense.

P4>P3>>P2>>P1

Regardless of story quality I do feel that MegaTen REALLY nailed it gameplay wise on the PS2, and kept nailing it. Devil Summoner and P3 were probably the closest to misses, and Devil Summoner was their first attempt at an action RPG system while P3 just had some AI issues.

But they have released RPGs this gen. Just not on consoles...

On consoles is what i meant. Both have been doing an amazing job in terms of handhelds. However, S-E made some good RPG's for consoles. I can't say the same for Altus, since their only game is Catherine....

Catherine was better than every thing Square's done in the past decade, much less that year.

Are we gonna need an 'Ys'-style 'Atlus is spelled A-t-l-u-s' banner soon?

On handhelds I think they were pretty even anyway, though Atlus gets the nod due to better late support, SE flaked out there and we were probably lucky to get 4 Heroes of Light and for Nintendo to pick up three DQ games, whereas Atlus had only a few serious omissions on handhelds, and it's likely each of those were out of their control to an extent (Devil Summoner either having technical issues or failing to pass SCEA, P2:EP seemingly having technical issues, and going by a Siliconera article on "cute games" their Atelier knock-off was probably a hard sell on retailers, especially with the DS on its way out.)

EDIT: Oh, there's the Union games too, that's a shame but I attribute that to Yggdra Union not doing hot. I'm just thankful we got the proper Dept. Heaven games still.

You can't say it for SE. All their current-gen console RPGs are crapolla.

And in that regard SE's barely better. Two tri-Ace games, Last Remnant, and enough FFXIII for eternity.

I dunno. The Last Remant was "ok" if you played it on PC. FFXIII is a mixed bag but there are still fans. But they're neutered by SE's handheld output such as BbS, type-0, Nanashi no Game (I liked it), Tactics Ogre, TWEWY, DQ games, Star Ocean PSP games, FFIV:CC, etc.

I enjoyed FFXIII, but it was the first good game from them since IX for me.

Can't really compare a puzzle to an rpg.

It has a fantastic story and great gameplay. Both things a good RPG should have.

Solid (hell, great) remakes and re-releases are preferable to half-baked sequels no one asked for.

What? SE do milk KH and FF but thy at least pump out a new Ip every now and then. Atlus just does SMT remakes and EO sequels. Catherine was the first time Atlus swayed from its formula and it worked pretty well.
