Is Atlus going to have a strong showing at E3?

I received their E3 invitation. They said in FAQ that no persona news. Anyone has posted the pic of invitation yet?

Very strange.

I dunno. The Last Remant was "ok" if you played it on PC. FFXIII is a mixed bag but there are still fans. But they're neutered by SE's handheld output such as BbS, type-0, Nanashi no Game (I liked it), Tactics Ogre, TWEWY, DQ games, Star Ocean PSP games, FFIV:CC, etc.
And I wanted Nanashi no Game! But I guess focus testing screwed that up for us (and thus another reason SE's been kinda shit this generation even if their handheld output was pretty solid, we missed seemingly half of it, especially in the latter half.)

And yeah, the console output isn't exactly BAD either, the tri-Ace games are probably the biggest blemish as I enjoyed Last Remnant and even the FFXIII games (as far as the first was from being what I want from FF, and as ridiculous as it is to keep flogging that horse.)

Well, if that's the case I guess that nuked the greatest hope some had. Even though I could see P5 being ridiculous, the best you could hope for is probably unveiling it a week or two in advance in Famitsu, then showing it off at E3 with the announcement of a near simultaneous English release.

Nevertheless I can hold on to hopes of some localization surprises, they don't really seem to have anything beyond SMTIV and Dragon's Crown coming up, so even just going "yeah that EO remake's coming here" will be nice.

It has a fantastic story and great gameplay. Both things a good RPG should have.

I wouldn't go as far as calling the gameplay great. Either way, people should start comparing current atlus to the old atlus. We go shit-ton of games from them in the ps2 era, and 5 years into this gen we only got a puzzle game (Consoles that it).

I enjoyed FFXIII, but it was the first good game from them since IX for me.

What? SE do milk KH and FF but thy at least pump out a new Ip every now and then. Atlus just does SMT remakes and EO sequels. Catherine was the first time Atlus swayed from its formula and it worked pretty well.

Yeah, making something new doesn't mean it gets a free pass when it's shitty, sorry.

I was skeptical about the puzzle format too, but I wound up loving it. Once it clicks, it's a thing of beauty.

If they could extend the same level of production values Catherine had to a Persona game I'd be more than excited; proper cut-scenes with expressive faces instead of static portraits even though the animation wasn't the best exactly & full voice acting.

I'm not expecting something like that from Atlus though, probably very expensive and they never get their investment back, we know the game has been in development since 2011 by what they've said, could be pre production phase then though. So it hasn't been that long to assume that, yeah this is going to be very ambitious huge game like that. Still I'm not sure what Atlus could do technically with PS4 that they couldn't do with PS3 level specs yet, don't see them making some technically impressive game even if it's a PS4 game now.

I'm not even expecting a Persona announcement this year.

Oh god am I hoping for it though. Any platform but XBone or Wii U works for me.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure 2011 was their pre-production year. And possibly 2012 as well. (Somebody can find that Siliconera post where Hashino says they've nailed down themes and Soejima has handed in character designs).

And yeah, I'm sure whatever they want to do PS360 can handle. They're strength is in the art. They do a lot with a little.

Although I must say... I might actually prefer portraits.

Yeah, wouldn't be disappointed at all if portraits stayed. More proper cutscenes would be nice though.

Umm...I'm not seeing why Atlus wouldn't give P5 the same level of production or higher than Catherine considering it's their biggest IP, and they made a new engine for it.

I'm thinking they'll go for a cel-shaded/stylized style for P5, once they actually move on to the PS4 it should help make the style that they might be going for look better. Even if they're not making some top of the line game technically, a nice clean style would still make the games look better than a lot of more technically proficient games. P5 will definitely be a PS3 game, but I'm sure it'll be a looker. I prefer nice stylized graphics anyway.

Agreed 100%. I think you're right on the money.

Catherine had like what, 3 locations? well 3 tiny rooms, only the bar was somewhat interactive everywhere else were background for cutscenes. It only had like half a dozen of character each with very few lines in the whole game and nightmare world were all looking same with different backgrounds. The game doesn't have any enemies or demons that a Persona game would have. The difference seems pretty big enough in time and budget. A big enough difference that sales probably won't fill up. Catherine was already stylized and that was probably why it looked good, I'm not sure if I like the cell shaded look here, what they have already in Catherine is perfect for these games.

P3 and P4 both didn't have many areas either nor that many NPCs. Still I wouldn't expect a new IP like Catherine to have the same budget/effort as P5, not to mention it's a puzzle game so a large number of areas and NPCs would be kinda weird.

Like, I'm not expecting some massive production values with all these areas and NPCs and enemies and whatnot for P5, but it should still be a step up from Catherine.

Edit: Persona is bigger than ever now, they should definitely be expending a much higher budget for P5.

whatever they do with P5, they have to model 100+ demons. They probably won't do those just to use them in a Persona game, sometimes reusing assets is a good thing, maybe we get a Devil Summoner game or something out of those later and not some handheld game with sprites only :P

Raidou 3. It's coming.

Atlus pls.

I seriously think that Atlus is going to shift development to focus on handhelds this upcoming gen. They started their PS2 years with enhanced ports of older SMT titles, then Nocturne, and then games based on that engine. This is after a generation of having spin-off games on its predecessor. Admittedly, Soul Hackers was a port, but Devil Summoner had a follow up in the Raidou games.

Look at the 3DS. Up-port of Soul Hackers, then a mainline SMT, and a continuation of the spin-off that had been on the DS. Coincidence? Yes, probably.

But Atlus has always followed the money. They jumped from Nintendo to Sega and Sony when Nintendo stumbled, and came back to Nintendo when the DS exploded. Given that Index is having problems, there's even more pressure than usual to make money and lots of it, and HD development is expensive. It's more cost-effective to go to the best selling device (the 3DS) and make high quality titles that don't need expensive engines.

For what it's worth, Persona 5 will probably be on the PS360 since Catherine was and they've been working on it for a while. But I wouldn't expect to see the follow-ups there unless they sell pre-13 Final Fantasy numbers worldwide.

They would never sell FF numbers of any sort, so no one would expect that, themselves included.

They're not gonna make P5 and bail on console games. They wouldn't have built an engine if that was case.

The smartest thing would be to make P5 then reuse assets to recoup costs/make a cheaper console game. Which is why the notion of P6 on PS3 (+360?) isn't infeasible.

P5 on PS3/360, then P5+ on PS4/XBone, then P5V on the Vita, then P5D on the 3DS, then P5S on Steam, then P5GOTY edition for PS3/360/PS4/Xbone/Vita/3DS/PC, then P5Arena, then P6 in 2016.

They should release P5 on PS3 and PS4. Then P6 on PS4, No way are they going to release P6 in 2016 on the PS3. Persona could become a hit if Sony helped advertising it and if they did not release one game every six years.

Very true! Persona 4 was... what, two years after 3? And three came out the same year the PS3 did. Depending on how long the current gen systems see sales continue they could very well release another game using the assets.

When PS3 hardware is vastly different from PS4 hardware and their engine is for the former, yeah there is.

And Sony couldn't do anything. Persona isn't something you can push to the mainstream. With the things it focuses on, it's almost lucky it flies under the water.
