Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Probably Half-Life 2 (and episodes) criticism. For some reason Half-Life is beyond criticism, and its fans tend to have a certain "we are better than you" air to them.

I understand why those games are praised and concur with those reasons. They atmosphere, art design, and world they've built is second to none. It's hard to pinpoint what it is that makes it so special -- it would seem all the components are standard (zombies, shooting, freedom fighter, etc.) -- but somehow it just comes out superb.

However, because of this and Half-Life's legacy, HL fans are way too lenient with that game's major mechanical faults. Most of the game's design is outdated and not in a good way.

1. The health system. There are two health meters, health and "energy." This is pointless and annoying. If you're not going to add some kind of recharging health, for the sake of being "pure," at least eliminate the Doom-era 2nd health.

Though really fights would become more fun if they changed energy to recharge. However I understand how that would make some people mad. "KEEP YOUR HALO OUT OF MY HL!!!!"

2. Grenade mechanics. Having to switch to grenades to throw them is absurd at this point. I should be able to map it to a mouse button or key and throw the thing. Being able to control the battlefield with grenades is fun... they left this option out.

3. Weapon selection is clunky.

4. Floating camera is truly awful at this point. I've heard some defenses of this like "Gordon is a presentation of god, so he has no body," but that's apologist nonsense.

5. Fuck headcrabs. Fuck zombies. Fuck those ants from episode 2. These enemies are not fun to fight. It is played out. I would much rather fight and intelligent opponent than those crappy headcrabs. As far as I'm concerned, Ravenholm was the culmination of that, and they should just let it go at this point. It's lazy, and it's not fun.

6. Gameplay is insufficiently open. Now, I hold this against most shooters... almost anything but Halo really... but Half-Life is supposed to be a top of the line FPS series. It should be at least as tactical as Killzone 2... not less so.

To Valve's credit, they did a great job with this at the end of Episode 2 -- but only then.

7. Enemy AI is laughably bad... it was laughably bad in 2004. The fact that the ol' "enter building, see 50 enemies, exit building, point at door, wait for them all to come out and shoot them" technique worked so well in 2004 -- let alone in the sequels -- is sad.

---

So in terms of mechanics it's a middling FPS series at this point.

As for the story -- again, it's hard to criticize too hard due to the atmosphere/intelligence factor of the world they convey through those games. However the silent protagonist shit has to be called out. It makes no sense. 50% of the mystery (such as who is the G-Man) of those games would be resolved if Gordon asked a few straightforward questions at a few points in the games. The fact that he refuses to say anything makes no sense. If, on the other hand, we accept the excuse that he really IS saying something -- we just don't hear it -- then that contradicts the whole "he's silent so that he's YOU!" defense; if he's ME, then I would know more of what's going on and not be kept in the dark.

So yeah, HL2 and episodes are overpraised.

Tomb Raider Legend was the first good Tomb Raider game.
Tenchu Wrath of Heaven was the first good Tenchu game.
Resident Evil 4 was the first good Resident Evil game.

All for pretty much the same reasons.

ME2>ME3>>>ME1

Alpha Protocol is one of the best console RPGs of the gen.

The "undead/zombie" horror game is overrated as a genre.

Forza>Gran Turismo

I loved The Force Unleashed

I really liked FF8. While the draw system certainly had its faults, I feel like the junctioning system it supported is one of the deepest and most satisfying in the FF games. Also Squall wasn't that bad.

Best game in the franchise.

Good man.

I think if you've nailed a successful gameplay formula, you leave it alone. If the game is fun to play, the sequel shouldn't change a thing. Write a new story, design an extension to the game world/universe as applicable, but leave the game mechanics alone.

Related, leave the engine alone. Do not rewrite anything. We do not need more sparks. Build your engine, and then aggressively reuse it, warts and all. Yes, we know it isn't perfect, nothing ever is. But don't toss it out or start rebuilding huge parts of it. Want to control your budget? Tell your whining programmers* to stuff it, and then put them to work on the next engine for an unrelated future project where the current engine actually isn't all that useful.

----
*I am a whining programmer in an unrelated field. We whine and complain and say the current code sucks and has to be tossed out. That's what we do. And it's generally true, the current code actually does suck and in a perfect world with unlimited budgets, it should absolutely be tossed out. Since we do not live in that perfect world, management should usually not listen to us.

I legitimately think graphics are the most important part of each "next gen." If it really were just about "good gameplay," I'd still be playing RPGs on my Genesis.

Hell yes, I like you.

Graphics, atmosphere, player acting, art direction, concept is the most important aspects in games for me. I actually don't give a fuck about gameplay... it's great when it's great, but if it isn't I wont hold that against the game.

Halo is and always has been way over rated
Gears of war, just isnt fun.
Forza is a poor mans Gran Turismo
xbox live is the biggest rip off in gaming, to pay a tax to use your own internet connection.
turn based games are extremely boring.
old psn was better than the new psn(speed wise)

Endless Space is a better 4X than Master of Orion 2.
Square-Enix's output in the 2000's wasn't worse than 1990s.
The Last Remnant and FF XIII-2 are better games than FF IV, VII or VIII.
Lost Odyssey was terrible and i'm glad Sakaguchi is out.
KHBBS > KH2 > KH1. Gameplay is always, always first priority.

Naughty Dog should've never dropped Jak for Uncharted. Jak is much, much better than Uncharted.

Originally i just wanted to post "FF IX is the best FF, and The Last Remnant is damn good", but it seems that's half the internet's opinion lately. Not that i mind.

Open world games are generally boring as hell. For a genre that is touted as one that is full of choices, you have to go to the freaking mission marker on your map to go to another marker on your map to activate the mission, which mechanically, the game is always inferior to other games they are deriving from, ie Red Dead's shooting is crap.

I want both Sony and Microsoft to DRM their games so I don't have to disc swap anymore.

No.1 feature in looking forward to this coming generation.

The NSMB games are a cheap cashgrab by Nintendo.

Being an "indie" game is no excuse for looking like it was made in 1802. NS2 had what, 6 people working on it, and it managed to look like a AAA title.

Why can't full game installs onto the HD be optional? I'll play from my disc and you can play from your HD.

Don't know how controversial this opinion is on GAF, but Shatter is boring.

Red Dead Redemption was a terrible game.

Games that try to have great big story lines are always boring. I want to play a game not watch a movie.

That games scored just below the average number of "5" on a 10-point scale are all bad. To bring up both GameSpot and IGN, if you read what a game that receives a "4" is, they both claim that it represents a bad or poor game. Now, this simply doesn't make sense to me; if a game that is a "4" is bad, then what is the point of the remaining scores of 1, 2, and 3?

Wouldn't it make more sense that a game that receives a "1" would be designated as being bad? Why waste your time trying to discern the difference between a game that is considered "abysmal" from one that is "terrible" when they both simply mean they are bad games? Just my opinion, though.

I have no idea who put those triggers (L2, R2) on the ps3 controller, they are possibly the worst thing to ever happen to gaming, it's like Sony handed the controller to someone in there HR department to pick out the triggers.

This shouldn't be controversial. Those things are garbage. There's a reason PS3 shooters put shoot on the shoulder buttons instead.

FPS are awesome and I'm okay with them dominating the console world.

Any guesses why I prefer Xbox? I tried to get into Resistance, I did, but I hate the PS3 controller for shooters.

RESIDENT EVIL 4 is horrible. Controls, setting, Leon, lack of zombies and MUCH more make this a POS. Last good RE game was RE3.

If you're anywhere outside of Japan, its Mega Man. Not RockMan.

Halo is the most cliched, trope loving game to come out. There is nothing original about this game. It is the most overrated series in ALL of entertainment.

Gears of War is not fun.

For all the pros that MS did to improve this industry, there cons far outweighs them. MS ruined the industry.

Mario hasn't been fun since N64.

MOTORSTORM is only fun when you think about playing it. After that its a mess.

Jak and Daxter is fucking lame. For those who want a Jak 4, pass whatever you're smoking to the left.

Any of the Super Smash Bros games are weak and boring as shit.

Dreamcast only had about three good games. Thats it.

Games on your phone are not games. They're cheap imitations of something that people use to join creating and playing.

I hate the 360 controller and can't fathom the love it receives.

My option is only possible with DRM involved. Hence why my opinion is controversial.

Resident Evil 6 is an amazing TPS.
The Witcher 2 is the one of the worst RPG games I've ever played, certainly the worst on 360.
MW3 is the best COD.
Gears of War, Resistance and Killzone are terrible shooting games.
3D fighting games are infinitely better than 2D.
I like the melee combat in Oblivion and Skyrim.
Metal Gear Revengeance is a terribly shallow game (compared to Bayonetta).
EA doesn't have a single decent FPS game on consoles.
