Jaime and Tyrion have been great characters so far. Jaime especially has gone through so much redemption in my eyes this season.

Eh. I know people are all on Team Jamie because he's shown he's not a complete turd, whatever. Even if he saved all those people in Kings Landing, his decision to keep sticking it in his sister still resulted in the deaths of a whole lot of other innocent people. He can eat a dick.

I was on Team Tyrion too, but until he goes completely rogue on his family, which I don't think he will, he's been downgraded to neutral in The Book of Chie.

Michelle Fairey sold her final scene so damn well. The way she helplessly screamed at Robb in anguish to get out, the almost reflexive way she cut the wife's throat, the strangely silent and extremely still look on her face after Robb was killed, all life pouring out of her figuratively then literally. It just made it all the more brutal.

She really was amazing

A pretty good episode, no? I liked when Walder Frey was all licking his lips over Talisa's smooth, tight body
This is, without question, the best episode of the TV show so far.

Masterfully directed. I've never read the books, but would someone who has say GRRM has to be very pleased by it? I would imagine so.

That is one of the craziest hours of television I have ever watched.

Not to twist the knife or anything (so to speak), but I am very glad to see that this indeed came as a shock to you non-book-readers.

I was afraid that the show was laying it on waaaaay too thick with the Robb/Talisa pregnancy bliss, and that it would clue you folks in to the carnage to come.

Please don't dump the show. There's plenty of good stuff to come.

Right, but the focus of the series so far has clearly been three dominant houses (Baratheon, Lannister, Stark) with all others orbiting about those. Baratheon is just Stannis, who seems in religious and moral turmoil, as well as disempowered after his failed attempt on King's Landing. Stark just got decimated. And Lannister ... well, I'm only caring about Tyrion, frankly.

So I think the current framing of the series kind of sets people up for this. Not sure how it works in the books, naturally.

Your comment does make a ton of sense, however, when you think that the Targaryens have to come back into this at some point. The series really has been global, but Dany's basically carrying an entire house by herself, and can't really hold up to the drama over in Westeros. (IMO, natch.)

The show logo has four houses, and there are others, like the Arryns in the Vale for example, or the Greyjoys on the Iron islands. The show needed to focus on some "good guys" for people to start reading, but Baelor should have woken up everyone.

joffrey better die next episode to make up for this!

i really have no idea where they are going with this story . . . that's an awesome feeling. the war is over, in one fell swoop. what now? do the white walkers become the main threat? does daenarys finally come to westeros?

also, this thread is moving fast, so i'll ask again: does anyone know what happened to the guy that took a piss? did they show him die and i missed it? that guy was hilarious when he was teasing edmure, and i dunno why they focused on him this episode.

Once again, there's no clear separation of good bad. These are human characters, they have flaws. Jaime and Tyrion's flaws are that they are loyal to their family and come on man who wouldn't be. It's their family. That and Jaime is in love with his sister and is obviously completely blinded by that love.

It's definitely not quite as well done as the books. There's a few key things that were even more intense when see from the perspective of Catelyn. But overall, it was very well done. I can't imagine GRRM is sad seeing that on screen after all these years.

Although I wished they had kept 'Rains of Castamere' from that band playing throughout the entire massacre.

It has not really been mentioned, but David Bradley did an awesome job as Walder Frey. I loved him as King Henry's court fool in the Tudors and now this.

Don't give up :)

The Starks were the focus of the show early on and they have been portrayed to be honorable and good. Fuck, they even have a heroic theme that plays whenever you see thei house sigil. There is a reason why people are attached to them. They are the most "good" of all the houses on the show. It's very obvious

I don't know. Dany despite obviously wanting to rule puts aside her ambitions and focuses on doing the right thing whenever there is injustice. Robb focused too much on vengeance and was a terrible leader. He broke promises.

I did not see him die in the scenes outside.

The Blackfish? I think that's the last you saw of him. Pretty sure they didn't show him die.

"That night, after the plates had been cleared, Robb carried Bran up to bed himself. Grey Wind led the way, and Summer came close behind. His brother was strong for his age, and Bran was as light as a bundle of rags, but the stairs were steep and dark, and Robb was breathing hard by the time they reached the top.
He put Bran into bed, covered him with blankets, and blew out the candle. For a time Robb sat beside him in the dark. Bran wanted to talk to him, but he did not know what to say. “We’ll find a horse for you, I promise,” Robb whispered at last.
“Are they ever coming back?” Bran asked him.
“Yes,” Robb said with such hope in his voice that Bran knew he was hearing his brother and not just Robb the Lord. “Mother will be home soon. Maybe we can ride out to meet her when she comes. Wouldn’t that surprise her, to see you ahorse?” Even in the dark room, Bran could feel his brother’s smile. “And afterward, we’ll ride north to see the Wall. We won’t even tell Jon we’re coming, we’ll just be there one day, you and me. It will be an adventure.”
“An adventure,” Bran repeated wistfully. He heard his brother sob. The room was so dark he could not see the tears on Robb’s face, so he reached out and found his hand. Their fingers twined together."

One thing we all tend to forget is that Robb was 15 fucking years old. He was good at battle strategy (he kicked the shit out of the Lannisters at pretty much every battle), but he SUCKED at politics. That was ultimately his undoing.

Are we to think that he knew that Talisa was pregnant? He did say he could see what was going on underneath the robes.

Kind of dirty old man, sure, but ... yeah.

The thought never crossed my mind. This is one of my favorite shows on tv right now.

Getting into this more below:

why do people call GoT ballsy? don't think that's the right word at all. intentionally antagonistic to the reader is better, though not quite perfect either. it's not really ballsy to create a handful of mildly interesting characters for the viewer/reader to like so flat villains who are practically faceless can kill them. Like, people are saying stuff like "but nothing else makes you FEEL like this" except I don't really feel that much. At this point, end of season 3, the show has hammered home its seemingly only thematic point: a society with such an archaic power structure is fucked up and cruel. And that point has really been taken about as far as it can be taken. As far as it can be taken and still be interesting, at least. If your only thematic thrust is "shit's cruel" you're making a sort of boring story

again at least there are interesting character left within that story between Jamie and Brienne and Arya and Tyrion, excited to see what they do. but I honestly couldn't give a shit about what's technically the central plot point of the series now. jon's a boring-as-shit dollface, Dany's become one-note, stannis has never had anything interesting to do himself other than stare at melisandre doing weird stuff. give the throne to fuckin Hodor for all I care
And now you get to miss E3 because you decided to spam troll images 3 times in a row just to annoy people. Time to ask yourself - Was it worth it? :)
Hah!
el oh el

I'm guessing if Arya lives she's going to be a stone cold assassin. Bran seems like he has the power to be, but is much more temperate minded.
yeah I wanna see her become like that Jaqen guy. should be cool.
what you makes you think they are?

Whats good about GOT is the play on what is classed as a hero or villain, no character is perfect or should be viewed as a hero. Season 1 should have shown that the concept of hero does not exist in this show
not my experience at all, the starks were pretty flatly portrayed as heroes in pretty much every conventional way. they're honest, humble, react with calmness and kindness before they act, eager to compromise, they aren't dysfunctional. they were very very blatantly classified as heroes. difference is that all the heroes are dead, which people say is ballsy. there's a difference between "ambiguous characterization" and "very obvious and simple characterization for 95% of the cast" where the "good" 47.5% of those simple characters die and the "bad" 47.5% live on and prance about.

What a crazy ass ending, wow. That no music at the end really cemented it.

I have no words right now, that final shot of cat......nope, no words.

Man... fuck you Frey. Go back to Hogwarts, you perverted old cunt.

From now on, I'm just going to believe that every character that is even remotely interesting will die in the most cruelest way possible, right when everything's looking good for them.

Except for the Trinity of Assholes: Tywin, Joffrey, and Roose -- though, Joffrey will probably die soon because of magic leeches but that won't matter because he's an insufferable little shit that should have been eaten by a wolf back in S1.

I can only hope that Ayra warms up to the Hound, finds Jaqen, and goes on a murderspree against all the bitch-ass traitors that betrayed the Starks.

Fuck.

One thing we all tend to forget is that Robb was 15 fucking years old. He was good at battle strategy (he kicked the shit out of the Lannisters at pretty much every battle), but he SUCKED at politics. That was ultimately his undoing.

I would think they did an age-up for him in the show though, given his looks and whatnot. Still his political skills would've been his undoing no matter the age. He was too pent up about his father and too in love with his wife.

Once again, there's no clear separation of good bad. These are human characters, they have flaws. Jaime and Tyrion's flaws are that they are loyal to their family and come on man who wouldn't be. It's their family. That and Jaime is in love with his sister and is obviously completely blinded by that love.

I'm not faulting the characters for who they are.

But that doesn't mean I can't hate them for it, and will take pleasure in watching them get what's coming to them.

Of course, since it's Game of Thrones, that's not likely to happen! hahahahahalolololololol!

This is basically what i wanted to say. I'll also add that i think its perfectly understandable to be upset over this and book readers who've already passed the stages of grief should be more considerate of those just now hitting them. But please dont give up on the series- it's important for there to be dramatic tension and i think you'll agree in the end that the ride was all the better for having events like this that make you care and fear for the other characters in the future. Lots of entertainment still to come.

Honestly, I kind of feel they must have known or at least had a feeling, because that guy went right for her stomach when they stabbed her.

Okay I've calmed down a bit.

1. Arya is like poison to her family. She was around when Ned died, and then shows up just as her mom and brother die. She needs to keep away from every other Stark less they be killed.

2. FUCK NO I'M NOT CALMED DOWN! FUCK THIS MAN!

You do realize it's making those scenes much more dramatic to make you, the viewer, in Arya's position (what if it was my father? What if it was my family?).

Still, Arya and her convictions, Bran and his psy powers, and Jon Snow (if he is not the stupid guy he was in this episode), Starks are not yet crushed.

And the same happen to house Targaryen in the past, look where they are now! :D

war of the roses? lannisters v. starks . . . lancasters v. yorks . . . is this actually a thing!?

I say this in all threads about Game of Thrones at one time or another... If you are at all interested in the historical influences of Game of Thrones, read the historical fiction novel the Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman. The book is wonderful, and just as powerful as Game of Thrones.
