Done with Anime?

Facets of the entertainment industry have slog phases. Maybe after staying away for a while, you'll be interested in new trends later.

pretty good actiony sci-fi anime

if you like ancient china during the warring periods watch kingdom, one of my top 5 animes and a second season is coming out this month.

i've watched it twice already since it ended before march and will probably watch it again once the second season starts
I'm sure that website isn't legal.

Anyone else felt this way?
I've realized the industry has kinda gone down the shitter. Everything is more or less the same moe shite. And now, looking back, I realize the series I did like (One Piece, Bleach, Toriko, .etc) weren't all that great either.
I just got bored of the same cardboard cut out characters, predictable "friendship is power" bullshit, silly, childish sweat drops and bulging crosses indicating the characters emotions, tropey personalities that aren't at all realistic, and which, sadly, most characters are defined by, and the fact that all these complaints are in more or less any Anime production.

I guess it might be due to me getting into classics such as The Count of Monte Cristo and such, but Anime just doesn't do it for me anymore. That, and, apart from a minority, the fans really get on my nerves with the "waifu", "kawaii", "sugoii" shite. I wanted to separate myself from that crowd, and have succeeded in doing so, and, in retrospect, I'm so happy that I did. Not that ever used terms like "waifu", but if your an Anime fan in general, the general public are gonna band you with that crowd anyway.

I guess I just wanted to know if anyone else jumped ship and were happy in doing so?
Of course, I won't let the Anime aesthetic stop me from playing decent games, like Pokemon, Dragon Quest, Zelda, and Final Fantasy, but that's purely from a gameplay standpoint.

I was feeling kinda the same when I decided to quit fansubbing. I couldn't start watching, let alone finish new shows.
But over the following months, I tried watching some older shows and classics, and I STILL love them. So I think it's more a question of new anime being shittier, rather than anime as a medium becoming less interesting as you grow older.
There's exceptions of course; I still love Bakemonogatari and its prequels/sequels.

Edit: I wonder, are there many (retired) fansubbers active on GAF? I'm fairly new here, so sorry if it's a somewhat silly question.

Have you watched all of it?

I'll let you figure out how to get hold of it yourself. I'm not sure if there is an English release yet but anyway:

If you like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo, basically there is a very high chance you'll enjoy this show. It has the same atmosphere. There's a sense of adventure and you get those same little self-contained stories in an episode that still develop the characters and move the story forward. It's great. It's one of those rare anime that is great. You'll care about the characters, what happens to them. The dynamic between the two main characters is very carefully put together. It is a little slower paced that Bebop or Champloo, less action, but the action is very good as far as I can recall. The art is beautiful, the score has some nice Brazilian-type stuff going on. It's an anime that non-anime people will probably dig. My parents liked it. Parents. haha watch it! The director of this show actually directed a couple episodes of Champloo if I've got my facts straight. And the acting is actually believable! So many anime have such terrible voice-actors, even in the Japanese version you can tell they're doing the hokey equivalent of "ughuh!!! Goku - uhhuh how c-can his p-power level be so high? Uhh-ughu!??" But here there is some genuine talent.

tl;dr: Watch it. It will restore the faith. And then break your heart when you realise once again anime is still mostly shit.

It's okay but not that good. There's much better stuff out there.

Also, 2012 was one of the best years in anime since forever, so many good shows, it's amusing how people try to justify their laziness to try and find something they might like by dismissing the entire medium AND the people enjoying that medium. lol

No idea, but I do know that is has ruined my appetite for dinner. So that's both my lunch and dinner ruined by old anime gifs. Who cares if "moe is killing anime" this old shit is killing my appetite and that is far more important!

What's this from?
Dream Hunter REM as pointed out before!
Baoh's facemelt scene was better.

But this anime has moe in it. It's clearly the moe that's the problem.

What were the best 2012 shows? I liked Kids on the Slope a lot but it basically had no ending, Daily Lives of High School boys seemed like a less funny/lower budget Nichijou. I heard Chihayafuru is great, I'll get around to watching that some time. Never liked the FATE series so dunno about Fate Zero.

How did the Jojo adaptation turn out? I want to see that.

I quit when Yakitate Japan! came out. Watched it, and then that was it.

Don't really know why.

I just can't identify with this community anymore for some of the reasons you cited.

I've eased back from anime significantly for the last 6 of so years. My "watch list" was usually about 5 or 6 new series deep in the 2002 - 2006 years. Not including long running shonen series that I kept up with.

I don't know, seemed like the past couple years have some really lousy seasons. I still peek at the Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter threads to see what's coming out, and I usually walk away with maybe 1 series I might think about watching.

I also feel a disconnect with a large segment of the anime community in terms of taste. I started noticing it when Code Geass started airing. Like I honestly didn't understand why people were even able to watch it, let alone the second season. Another recent one is Deadman Wonderland. If Geass and Wonderland are supposed to be fun shows, I'm done with the anime industry. Haha

You get older, more critical. And you have more exposure and start seeing some of the cliches. It happens with movie watchers too. At least I know it's happening with me. People recommend stuff like Attack on Titan or Psycho-Pass and I watch and think "Uh, it was alright. Might check it out more in the future."

I have strange tastes though. I miss Akagi, Kaiji and Golgo 13. I don't need amazing visuals, I just miss classical storytelling and intrigue.

I thought it was amazing, but hey, different strokes :p
And yeah I see that, but having said that, wading through all the shit is arduous and a lot of people wouldn't know where to start. I certainly don't blame people for thinking that, I don't even keep up with it as much as I did a few years ago because it's such a mission! Let's face it, the majority of stuff coming out on the anime scene, if it's not shit, it probably isn't story-writing certified platinum haha :p But dismissing its fans is a bit far I guess. I don't dismiss sports fans! haha

I dunno dude maybe you should try 1-2 cour series' over really lengthy shounen stuff. I go in and out of periods like this, and shorter, lower time commitment shows are usually what get me interested again. What shows besides the three you listed have you enjoyed?

Those are just shit shows. Stop listening to people who like those shows.. and listen to someone like me who personally recommends.

Mononoke
Trapeze
Tsuritama
Kids on the Slope
Mawaru Penguindrum
Tatami Galaxy
Usagi Drop
Wandering Son
Aku No Hana
Hyouka
From the New World
Fate/zero
Eve No Jikan

I'm sure you'd find something to like about all these shows!

You need to go for the classics like Dirty Pair, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, The Big O, Outlaw Star, etc. (mostly Sunrise anime is my favorite it seems...lol) Tiger & Bunny is a really good one for a recent series. If you want something like corrupt Powerpuff Girls, watch Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, it's full of sexual and dirty humor.

I watched the moe show Lucky Star and I actually liked it, but that is as far as I went. I loved Hanasaku Iroha...it never got a dub though (coming of age) :(

If you want a heartwarming anime to watch Usagi Drop is good (but avoid the manga at all cost!)

Blue Exorcist was really cool, but it's mostly like a high school drama with supernatural characters and friendship.

You have to dig through the crap to find the gems. There are so many anime I actually enjoyed but I can't really remember all of them, I don't know if I ever updated My Anime List lol.

This.

seems to me like anime did indeed dip in quality over the years but i don't if its just me getting older or whatever. the last truly great anime i saw was cowboy beebop ('great' as in anybody could get into it, not just otakus or teens) but i'm aware there's alot of stuff out there i missed

flowers of evil is great though

Come to #animegaf on Rizon, there are a bunch of anime subbing vets.

I thought I was done watching anime in recent time. Then I saw The Big O today.
Haven't seen it in years and damn does it hold up to the test of time.
I will now go watch some old series and reminisce. Forgot how shows like The Big O, Lupin the 3rd, Cowboy bebop, One piece, Dragonball, Gintama were so good.

I want to say negima as well but they botched the adaptation of that series badly.
