Microsoft cancels post-E3 media roundtable

Say what you will about Kotaku, I feel like J and his colleagues have been doing a good job pushing MS on questions. I feel they have done more than say...IGN or some of the other major publications.

yep.

Keighley is also good on this front.

I can't believe that they'd just cancel their q&a with no replacement event. It seems just too easy a way to let people pile on their already deteriorating situation. Although,I guess the actual q&a session could have a similar effect.

Yeah, Jason's been here and in it since the reveal. Been doing a good job.

Oh man, Sony and Microsoft couldn't be further apart in terms of PR - it feels like Sony have made a lot of good decisions so far this year and are in-touch with what most of us actually want. Microsoft's PR would have been better off keeping quiet, all they've done is create some massive concerns about the direction they are taking and yet are unable to give any kind of rebuttal.

The sad thing is both consoles and companies are probably following the same path, but have just presented it very difficulty.

Hmm, interesting, but I won't read too much into this just yet, unless of course they literally provide zero answers at E3, which I don't see happening. Perhaps they don't want any excessively negative and confusing stories coming out of E3, and want to have greater control over the flow of information coming from their side (and really, can you even blame them for wanting that much?) so they figure they much rather just say and get out all the information that they want and need to put out there at their conference, and then do their usual media rounds after that, largely focusing on, you guessed it, the answers and statements they provided in their E3 presser.

A media roundtable, to them, might just be unnecessarily redundant. But this is all assuming the fact that they provide necessary answers at E3. People expecting them to give ground and somehow knock their own product down a peg or two will, of course, be disappointed. But if they both appear to be dodging while answering no questions, then, well, they've created another mess. :)

So where does Major Nelsons' tweet about "we are listening" fit into this? Has anyone asked him about the cancellation?

Did they "listen" and then bail?

This whole E3 feels like a clusterfuck with Nintendo and Microsoft trying to dodge as much as humanely possible.

Paying devs NOT to show their game on a rival's hardware. Holy shit.

What will Sony do? I hope there's some contract-fu Sony had in place obligating pubs to show footage of their game at the show. It's a matter of choosing either maximum exposure by showing stuff for Sony or taking MS's exclusivity bribe. Which nets them more cash?

Well that's generally the case in other media from what I've seen. I can't think of any group Q&As for video games I've seen though. Not that one on ones ever achieve much.

Really it's just a question of courage. From practically all the gaming press interviews I've seen, (again, except Luke Smith anyway), it's like the press are scared to ever press anything, and never ask any challenging follow ups.

It could be because some viewers find it irritating. There was a pretty big deal made about an interview with Tarantino a few months ago in the UK, the interviewer kept hammering away, rephrasing the same question until Tarantino outright refused to address it. No one in the gaming press I know have nearly the stones to try it.

Smart move, because they didn't screw up yhe last announcement so much as the the interviews afterwards. That was the mpst confusing and contradictinh part. So good news, no need to make this a big deal as well. People are just out for blood.

I think Microsoft is relying on the notion that most people will be pretty much enamored by the big game announcements and next-gen footage. And other than the journalists writing snarky articles and GAFfers doing armchair analysts, I think Microsoft might wind up being pretty much right.

Thanks. I think a lot of outlets have been doing well. I think game journalists take more flak than they deserve. And I think this will be a good E3. If Microsoft does clam up and try to pull the same bullshit they've been pulling since the reveal, I imagine the press will be all over them.

Smart... they know they have nothing good to discuss.

Even if true, you can't do it forever, it must be hugely expensive.

It would be so much better if they could work on their messaging and make sure anyone who will come close to a mic is saying the exact same thing.

can Sony just do the job of showing the 3rd party games?

Kotaku has been amazing this year. They were the most consistent source of correct leaks all winter and spring. I think it's time for this forum to lighten up on them a bit.

I'd absolutely LOVE to know how MS went from giving Sony a black eye with the 360 to shitting every bed going over the course of 8 years. It's ball-dropping of truly staggering proportions.

Even after hearing different possible explanations, this is still so baffling.

Eh, that's a little one sided. In the last two years Sony has closed a bunch of studios while Microsoft spent hundreds of millions on new exclusives.

Note: Although the above is true, it's also a one sided view of things.

True to an extent. Until they show what they have been buying, and confirm it isn't all moneyhats and marketing, they I can't say they have done their job.

Sony has done everything in their power to cater to gamers because they were FORCED to be a decent company again after getting lost in hookers and coke for a bit.

I want to see these games and that is all I will say.

They listened, didn't like the feed back, and went back to the drawing board... Not likely but one could dream.

I always come back to Occam's Razor.

The simplest explanation to me after watching the reveal is that they don't know what they want this thing to be and it's being pulled in too many different directions and is suffering mightily because of it.

May or may not be true, but that's what makes the most sense to me at this point in time. I look forward to learning more.

The first thing that came to mind was...what if that money was actually added onto the 1Billion already being spent on first party games? Make more internal games, or heck, pay for more 3rd party exclusives. What a better use of money that would be.

No, the simplistic explanation is they know we won't like what they are going to say, so they want to avoid situations where they'd have to say it.

Yeah I guess it could just be that certain things aren't ready to show off or explain yet, like how we saw the actual Kinect was quite slow at reactions. Perhaps they plan to rework how the DRM works and don't want to finalize anything either. Hopefully they have some event later on to make up for it.

Damned straight. The reason PS4 is so awesome is that Xbox 360 taught them a lesson.

Looks like the tides may have turned this gen.

I'm starting to really wish they would just cancel the thing altogether and just get the hell out of games. Or just build the set top only box they want it to be.
