They can't really afford to do that. It would mean that they'd be giving Sony a holiday season alone with CoD, Assassin's Creed and Battlefield, plus whatever other multiplatform games are coming out. That's why it looks like they're going to downgrade the hardware instead of delaying it.

Monday can't come soon enough lol.

But will it force microsoft to delay the launch when Sony launches the ps4 this year or you think they will go ahead and try anyways. either way. buying the ps4 lol

MS will probably launch this year in US and UK, with the rest of Europe and Asia coming in 2014.

And those early adopters will get RROD type system failures.

This awesome.

How is DCUO? I remember downloading it when it became free on PS3, but haven't touched it since. I thought it was a really interesting concept.

What's going on? MS got too comfortable.

I dunno. It doesn't sound the same thing that happened with PS3. With PS3 it was more of a ''we can go overboard with this project, the fanbase will stay there no matter what. Put UFO tech in that bitch''. And MS is more like ''Cool you guys got Xbox to be a mainstream brand, we will take it from here. There will be a few changes around dese parts''

With Sony I feel it was more about the hubris. With MS the Xbox project has been taken over by some guys in suits who had nothing to do with the previous machines. I'd almost say the latter is worse if you are in only for the games and hardcore gaming that was the very strenght of the brand over anything else.

In that case, corporate meddling might be more appropriate.

I think that they got too comfortable and they thought Sony was going in the same direction that they are. That leaked 2010 document already pointed toward MS attempting to make a set top box. But MS also predicted that Sony would be doing the same. They had the PS4 listed as having built in Google TV. It turns out that instead Sony just pushed their chips all toward gaming.

Microsoft's strategy has always been clear, the Xbox brand has just been a foothold to get a multimedia box into the living room. I don't get why people are so surprised that they are starting to move away from being a "hardcore" gaming machine.

MS is doing what MS does. They've done in the smartphone industry, they've done it in the tablet industry. They coasted on previous successes and got caught off-guard. It's not a new thing for them.

The end of this year should be interesting.

Apart from the whole developer friendly aspect, and actively reaching out for feedback, Sony's philosophy with the PS4 is no different than PS3, PS2 etc. The PS4 is a natural evolution of those machines with the added benefit of learning from certain mistakes. It's still a media machine with the core emphasis on gaming.

MS are just sticking to their own vision and trying to make waves. They've always had the same plan. In a way, it is smart of them to try and differentiate their vision to grab a different market. They weren't going to put up a similar fight had they just gone for a normal gaming machine, and it would've clashed with their entire vision too. People put way too much emphasis on the PS3/360 situation. The way this generation unfolded, Wii excluded, was thanks more to Sony's own mistakes rather than Microsoft doing anything particularly special. And even with the marketshare and mindshare the Xbox brand has gained, it's still a non-factor in Japan, and won't have the benefit of a 15 month head start in Europe. The US is essentially what they're banking everything on.

I just question how unprepared they seem to have been for their own vision if these rumours are to be believed. That's just incompetence I wouldn't have expected. It's not like they haven't had close to a decade to prepare. And being caught off-guard by Sony is what makes this so funny to me, because SCE went the safest route possible. But I guess they didn't expect Sony to push the machine like they did in terms of hardware, but then the question is, why not? They've never held back before.

There must be moronic things happening at MS.

The guys that helped give the 360 a head start at the very beginning of the generation have left MS long ago (J Allard, Robbie Bach, Peter Moore) and other suits with clearly different philosophies have taken over their roles it seems like to me, I think that has had some degree of impact on the company.

MS is trying to beat Apple to owning the living room. Its unfortunate for them is that they are not as hip or don't have the brand to compete.
