Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

So basically, if microsoft turns off the servers when Xbox Two is out, then this entire generation of games is wiped out permanently?

Yes. Whether or not you get to play Xbone games at any point in the future is entirely up to Microsoft, and maybe somewhat up to a publisher.

I know they're big corporations and profit is their bottom line...

But this all seems so brutally against the customer. None of these features seem to be designed to make our lives better or easier in any way. I miss the idea of games as an easy and fun distraction. Like pulling out a board-game with friends.

It's really going to turn me off of a lot of games that I might otherwise play because of all the hoops I need to go through for very little benefit.

It hasn't. You can't even begin to compare this to steam or iOS. There are plenty of posts in this thread and others which prove this comparison is a bad idea. Those services offer benefits to consumers along with little cost, this is benefits for the publisher, not consumer. Hell just look at the 24 hour check in, neither iOS, Steam, or Google do anything like that. It's not a good comparison at all.

well I'm not concerned with comparing the services as a whole, I'm concerned with all the people pretending that this is violating some sort of principle with DRM. and if it's really based on principle, then the line was crossed a long time ago and we ain't ever going back. if it's not... then it's just another product. there are plenty of products I don't buy (because I, like most everybody else, have limited funds, time, etc.)—that doesn't mean I'm morally opposed to them or anything. I just don't buy them.

no product maker is obligated to make their product for everyone. microsoft doesn't want people's money—fine, don't give it to them. welcome to capitalism.

I'm on board for the Xbox One boycott. I don't care if only ten of us ever end up boycotting, I'm going to be a part of it.

Oh I'm 100% on board with this. If ever a Xbox One enters my house I'm going to Office Space the fuck out of it and post it's dying carcass back to Microsoft as a warning sign.

As much as I enjoy Internet outrage I find it rarely translates to lost sales. Modern Warfare 2 - no dedicated servers, etc.

People will probably still snap this thing up.

My guess is that Sony is going to leave this up to the publishers who will implement the same system.

You keep saying this, but it contradicts their statements about not needed internet, how can you verify ownership without it? The disc? Ya, that's what we have now.

EAT SHIT dude.

Is it hard to believe there are Xbox fans that, upon the eve of E3, are wanting to talk more Xbox with other gamers?

If you look at my post history over the last few days I've been mostly in Xbox related threads because I'm absolutely stoked about the prospect of what Rare is going to show (been a fan of theirs for 20 years, buy every game of theirs on day one). They're tied to Microsoft, so I'm in rain or shine, so I'd like to focus on the positive.

All that said, I still see why people are upset. I would recommend you vote with your wallet, but there's absolutely no sense in attacking people who aren't as upset about this as you are.

So it's really an always online console with a 24 hour grace period, yeah?

Oh and needing publisher approval to trade-in games. I think we just got a clue about how the PS4 will handle shit too, they said it was up to the publishers too.

I am wondering if they will add this DRM mechanism to all new 360 games as well.

So it sounds like a can sell games to my friends if I want.

Also, I don't need to lug games to my friends' houses.

Makes some things easier, while cutting back the used game market. Obviously, internet-dependent as well.

Do people actually sell friends games? I've never sold or bought a game from a friend, it's always borrowing.

Ya'll realize that even though you can register up to 10 family members to your XBL account, only one family member may play in addition to the account holder at the same time, right?

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

The key word is "one".

Looks like Im gonna have to change from Xbox to PS4 depending what sony responds to this gamer shafting fiasco from MS. I've used xbox 360 as my primary gaming console while the others, (wii, ps3) were used for exclusive titles. This is just pure fuckin BS...I thought MS was going to improve the 360's capabilities instead of making their next gen console a gamer's financial/entertainment liability as well as making it underpowered.

Overall, I'll support any game company that speaks to us gamers and if gives us what we want., now what we should like because "its hip to own" or some stupid PR BS comment like that.

I dunno GAF, Im just pissed..
:/

We all know how boycotts like these end.

IF I EVER SEE THIS FUCKING PIC AGAIN I SWEAR TO GOD

EDIT: I hate it because it shows fucking nothing. Steam lists the people playing in front, so out of all the thousands who are part of that group, what like 20?, are playing Call of Duty on (probably) launch day.

I'm not going to look at any MS only games next week, I know how weak I am and I really don't want to break and support this shit.

No XBone for me. Xbox was my main console the last two generations but I am out. There's still a used game market? Sure there is. You can't sell to EBay or Amazon Market Place or Craigslist. Instead of this gen when Gamestop was the worst place to sell your games, now it's the only option (and Best Buy and Amazon) and they will be paying less than ever for your games. I'm voting with my wallet on this one, and I'm not voting for the XBone.

Well, that is one less next gen console to buy. I like how they attempt to spin this, but it just looks just as bad as before (if not worse).

That is unfortunate since one of the things I like about consoles is that those games are still playable as long as the hardware works. Now its just over once the servers are no longer supported. My old consoles and their games still work. Its a damn shame. This will be the first Xbox console I don't buy.

I really don't think people outside of message boards care. Not minimizing anyone's opinion, but I just don't think most care. I think people love gaming so much, they will just adjust. They will find a way to make sure they connect to the internet, they will find a way to jump through the hoops to play used games, to share games with friends, etc. That is their choice, just like it is anyone else's choice not to do those things.

Which ever side of the topic you are on, I think we can all agree this will be a generation like no other before it in terms of technology and in terms of policies.
I posted the new on Facebook and 3 people replied negatively. 2 confirmed they won't be buying the system because of this.

Have to agree here. People already can't sell, lend, trade apps on their phones and tablets. To them this won't be very different. Xbox One will probably do pretty good sales wise.

I wonder if the shills realize how much Gaffers would pay for a copy of the MS orientation video...

I'd chip in at least £20.

*hint hint*

As someone who has a reliable Internet connection and doesn't purchase used games/borrow games, nothing announced here is really troublesome for me. Having said that, I can totally see why someone would refuse to buy this system. If you have shoddy internet, or heavily rely on used games, then it absolutely makes zero sense to buy this system. I personally lack the moral conviction to protest a console for reasons that don't personally effect me. It's definitely a selfish position, but In a choice between ideals and personal gaming, the latter is going to win every time. Having said that, I think some of these decisions by Microsoft are extremely stupid and definitely going to have a tangible effect on the momentum of their brand.

Just thought I'd quote this, good post.

I cannot wait for the angry parent responses. This is where the non-forum backlash will be coming from.

If all else fails, I hope the industry crashes, and hard. If so much of this is because of big greedy publishers, I hope the smaller firms and Indies inherit the earth and rebuild.

and so shall the indie plattforms of android and ios rise
Scnr

I am curious about the #nodrm folks. Is nintendo even an option, if sony goes a similiar way?

Guys, there's no fucking way MS is going to let 1 game be shared between a group of 10 people. There has to be some sort of catch there. These policies show they want $$$$$$$$ and letting 10 friends share one game would kill sales. Even if only 1 of the 10 is able to play at a time. Can't see this happening.

I hope the people that make games are happy about making a few bucks now when the games they seem to care about are no longer playable because Microsoft decided they could save a penny by shutting off servers.

If any of you have a damn about games being recognized as a legitimate form of art, you would care about people in future generations being able to experience what you created.

It was never about creating something that can be enjoyed for generations to come. It was about lining your pockets.

A number of people in this thread talk about how "if your internet sucks, you should change your provider." But the reality is that while you have 2 other choices for internet (mobile LOL, satellite LOL), they're not as good as terrestrial internet (fiber, cable)... and the latter kind is controlled on a per district basis, meaning Comcast and Time Warner, for example, cannot exist within the same area. Of course, I'm talking about the U.S. here, which is what Microsoft's targeting.

There's also another aspect of this that people are doing: assumption that Microsoft's servers will stay online 24/7. With all this talk about consumers being screwed over, what are the odds that Anonymous or any cyber hacking organization will attempt to take down these servers to prove a point?

Things to consider in this conversation...

Everyone who plans to boycott, sign it, and then we can see how many of them end up posting Forza 5 impressions come November.

When people even bring this up. They seem to forget that it was a public group that anyone can join. Easy way for people to troll the group. Not that I fully disagree with what you're getting at.

I just found it amusing how you are so enamored with Microsoft that you were somehow able to put a positive spin on this nonsense.

Oh yes, I love Xbawx. Seriously though, there's enough negativity to go around (with reason) sometimes "it could be worse" puts a few things in perspective.

Also at least we can buy PS4's. Wait, we don't know if Sony is doing some of this do we?

When I hear 70% of Xbox360 users are Live users. I think of the millions and millions of teens out there sitting in matchmaking right now talking about their lives and bad mouthing one another (seriously). I don't think of myself or anybody I know.

I feel bad I'm not really into watching a lot of TV or sports really. I might as well sit this MS XBox out. Sad, but true.

I think it's hard to say whether people truly care or not yet. The average consumer isn't, let's be honest, too bright. They think nothing of the issues right now but let's see how dudebro #1 feels when he can't play Madden because his internet is fucking up.

It will be interesting to see what happens, and if the negative press snowballs out of control, once the thing is in homes.
