Unsustainable? I don't know about that. I've managed to survive most of this gen while largely avoiding first person shooters. The genre just does nothing for me. Portal 2 is really the only first person game I've played this gen that wowed me in any real significant manner.

I even suffered through New Vegas in third person just to avoid the disconnect of playing as a disembodied camera with a gun taped to it.

You ever try Mirror's Edge or Zeno Clash?

Mirror's Edge made me physically sick to play. Total vertigo - I had to give up on it about two hours in to keep the migraines from getting worse. I really don't do well in games that have a ton of rapid camera movement and vibration like that. I like a static or controllable camera.

Never played Zeno Clash, but I heard it was super-janky.

That's a shame about ME. I've only played a bit of ZC, but I've played enough to know it's definitely unique compared to the usual FPS. I figured you don't like FPS because of how same-y everything can feel after so long.

Yeah, I'm pretty confident we'll see something new from SSM for PS4 at E3. GG and SP have already announced their games and KZ and inFamous aren't the biggest franchises, ND probably isn't going to show anything before Last of Us is out and Polyphony is working on GT6 for PS3 so having a new game from "the makers of God of War" will be something Sony wants to get out there.
Right. I'm okay with another Killzone (MP) and a next-gen inFAMOUS should be excellent. But I'm ready for that "next-gen" experience that blows me away. SSM has the resources to do that.

Then you've missed some truly great games.

Well, you're half right. The sameyness definitely contributed to my dislike of the genre.

I'm also just not a fan of that perspective as a whole, partly due to the migraines and partly due to the inability to feel like I'm controlling a human being or a character in the story when I can't see them.

I really don't feel like I have. I've played plenty of shooters in my day. They never speak to me the same way RPGs or action/adventure games do.

Aw that sucks man, sorry. I have to think it's especially crummy for you with how it's become the over-saturated genre/camera perspective of choice of this generation.

Maybe it's a unique FPS though.

I tend to agree that the genre is over-saturated right now, but you never know what kind of unique twist and spin they could have on it.

WORD!

This is SSM.

The things they could pull off with the environment alone would be absolutely breathtaking. And on PS4!? Shiiieet! Yes please!

Plus, this has got to be a passion project for them if they're willing to take such a risk. If they're heart is in it, that's great for gamers.

Interesting about your disconnect from the character. I get what you mean, I always feel more immersed in the environment in first person but care more about the character in third person. I love the immersiveness first person provides though. It's a shame your migraines are such a block for that. I really want more adventure, exploration based first person games.

It's one of the main things that led to me becoming as jaded and pessimistic as I am. Everything seems to be a shooter these days, and most of them tend to be first person as well. It really makes it hard to get excited for next gen when that trend isn't showing any signs of slowing down.

I think that's the core difference between us. I don't play games to be immersed; I generally play them to experience a story or to interact with characters I care about. I find character interaction is almost impossible to do well in first person, especially close contact. Any time an NPC tries to hug my character in a first person game, I just laugh.

I don't project myself into a character when I'm playing the game. In the microwave corridor scene in MGS4, I was pounding on the button like a madman not because I was going to die, but because Snake was going to die. I wanted Snake to live. I don't have that kind of reaction in games where I'm supposed to imagine I am the character. I'm an actor - I do that kind of thing every day. When I play a video game, I'd rather someone else do that work for me and let me enjoy the story. :)

I think that has already been confirmed. New gametype, right? But whatever they are working on, we will see it soon. There's no way they are going to build a new engine all over again (like GG and ND). And God of War III shipped early 2010 -- meaning whatever this game is, it started prototyping/development in late '09.

iirc Stig said he has been part of it since 2010. Definitely high time for it to be shown too..been long enough.

Also I'm really curious to see what Seth is up to at SSM.

The B-team can't possibly be working on anything new yet - they're still doing DLC for Ascension. If SSM is making an entirely new game, it has to be Stig's group.
Nah. I'm pretty sure they branch off the senior members to work on new projects. You think Pappy is dealing with Ascension DLC?
Where did the rumor of SSM's game being a FPS start?
Job listing description for someone with knowledge of shooter/open-world driving mechanics experience.

Depends on how substantial the DLC is. If it's bigger stuff like an entirely new game mode or new story content, you bet he's involved. Ascension just came out a month or two ago - they're definitely not far enough along to announce an entirely new game, even if there is one in preproduction. It's way too early.

Meanwhile, Stig's game has been in the works since 2010. They have to announce it at some point.

Well, they have to announce the price if this thing is coming out in the Fall.

Now how much of a loss is Sony willing to take on the hardware this time?

Without the complexity and "overkill R&D" of Cell, and knowing all the shit they took from PS3's console launch, I think we can realistically hope for less than $400. Maybe $399.99?

499 is my confident guess.

No SP DLC as it's too expensive (mo-cap and all that jazz). All DLC so far as been MP, and the next DLC is confirmed to be MP. Seth was brought in just before All-Stars -- his experience is in combat systems and balancing. That's why his input was largely useless for PSABR (came in too late). So, if the game started development in 2010 -- they need his input three years later? It's possible, but it wouldn't give me much hope.

Anything Ascensions is a good thing to me!
Is it campaign related?

Edit:
Just read Muse. Darn it!

Seth probably isn't involved in Stig's game either. Everything I've heard about his role at Sony is that he's kind of a freelancer who gets sent to help studios out independently.

Multi-quote isn't working for me. Am I alone?
Verendus has said $349 is being thrown around inside SCE.
The one thing Verendus predicted was wrong.

I'm inclined to agree. SSM tends to be the hub for lots of other developmental stuff.

I could be wrong. But I doubt it.

How do you figure that?

I guess the idea that if Sony is making it that low, they have to be getting their money elsewhere from services, etc. It's pretty silly to be honest considering Sony was taking a huge cut from every PS3 being sold when it first came out. Now while I don't think Sony is going to repeat that, they probably know they aren't going to get anywhere higher than $450.

Let's hype this thread up with some GopherD quotes! So I think SSM's PS4 game is a good bet to show up at E3.

You have to remember that this E3 doesn't just show off whats coming this next year. Its the generational change E3, so console makers show their long term cards to drag people into their camp early.

Oh my word this is going to be good.

I apologise, but I'm going to preach a little here.

This is a new gen launch. In an industry where we are diversifying way too much, delivering way too little and making it way too hard for people to enjoy gaming for what it is, it is a chance to stop and reset. Above all, it's a chance to show the gaming community what game creators, system designers and industry leaders have learnt since 2005.

For Sony, it is as much a revitalisation of their industry as well as a chance to show it still belongs in this game. Everyone at Sony knows they dropped the ball this gen and many inside have been waiting a long time to rectify that. I spoke to a dev in Frankfurt last month who admitted that almost everything that has gone wrong with his studios games has been a result of trying to force games down strictly defined paths brought on by limited hardware and mostly, really bad ideas. He wants gamers to reconnect, to feel enthusiastic again and he wants Sony to start making fun games once more.

Hyperbole? Maybe. I guess the proof is coming soon. I have seen much to keep me very optimistic. But the chance to reconnect with gamers again will have Sony and MS showing more than just titles for this holiday launch. Everyone remembers 2005 and 2006 E3's as setting up the consoles for this gen. So will this E3 define the start of next gen.

In Sony's case, it's about redemption.

There are so many really frustrated devs at the moment who will be trying to gain attention for some damn amazing work over the next few days, and its getting drowned in (justifiably) negative shit.

If the industry decides to allow corporate wanks to throw handbags at 10 paces, then let them. Let's remember what makes us excited about working and playing in this field. Hype it up!

And let Nomura's Return be EPIC :)

What is the minimum wage in Australia?

the average wage in Aus is about the same as USA, and the US:AUD ratio is roughly the same, though back then it was probably 1USD to 0.8 AUD.

So the equivalent cost was about 800 US dollars, for people earning about the same amount. But add on to that, pretty much ever major city is very expensive to live.

There is no really justifiable reason for the expensive games in Australia, the taxes and import costs would not cover the whole mark up. Its just retailers being greedy.

I paid about $890 and then bought two games for $110 each at launch.

man this starting to feel like a history in the making, and I live through it. felt like a movie almost, all this drama, tales of redemption, return of the king, preparing for war, corporate espionage and counter intelligence, decoys, ambush, baits etc.

someone should make a movie out of this. it'd be like tales of the three kingdom: console edition. lol
