Sony must be under some heavy pressure now:

I mean MSFT can only go up, basically, they have all the eyes on them, on the other hand.

I think for Sony they have an element of hope and expectation. Everyone hopes they won't do a what MS has done, everyone hopes they will continue what has been a fairly positive run for them with good gamer focused decisions.

For MS people are expecting some games, they imagine the situation can't get much worse than it is. It would be difficult for the situation to get worse for MS, but easy for it to get worse for Sony.

Pretty crazy to think just a few weeks ago everyone was claiming MS would have the momentum from the reveal going into E3 and that Sony screwed up by showing it off to early. What a clusterfuck of epic proportions.

I think what has been interesting over the last 6 months is seeing so many posts basically saying "bu bu bu Microsoft won't LET Sony have the more powerful machine, or won't LET Sony announce first, or won't LET Sony release first, or won't LET 3rd party games look better on PS4, or won't LET Sony be chraper.

Almost as if Sony is am unruly teenager and Microsoft is the parent who has ultimate control over everything in the world.

Fallout is basically as big as Final Fantasy, FO3+NV sold around ten million, as did XIII+XIII-2. They're in the ballpark of even.
But XIII and -2 were dissapointments in every way possible, while FO3 was the most popular game in the series to date.

Not exactly a fair comparison.

EDIT: Typo, meant to write FO4. Been reading too many rumours lately xD

So with Hotline 2 being at E3 Im wondering if it will be at Sonys show, or booth. It could easily show up in a montage, or could be unveild as a Vita (and pc) announcement during the conference. Looking forward to seeing what their up to with it. Would also be cool if they release some of these more anticipated indies on psn during the show.

Sony was angling to get the Vita version released on the same day as the PC

It's planned for PC, although Abstraction, the company currently porting Hotline Miami to Vita, can now work on the sequel's port "right away," Wedin says. Dennaton is in talks with Sony, but if all goes well the sequel may ship day-and-date on PC and Vita, Wedin and Söderström say. Devolver Digital is on tap to publish again, and Dennaton is still talking with them, too.

So, it definitely could pop up in an indie reel.

Fallout 4 is not going to be exclusive.

I could see next-gen exclusive for a brief window (6 months maybe? a year?). FO3 did like 5 million copies. There is no way they give that up.

(I don't think a mainline fallout is as big as a mainline FF. Close, but not quite). The only reason FO3 + NV are close to FF13 + 13-2 is because 13-2 was an epic catastrophe.

wait till you see lightning returns

Almost as if Sony is am unruly teenager and Microsoft is the parent who has ultimate control over everything in the world.

Microsoft may not have ultimate control over everything in the world, but they do have control over A LOT of things. Enough things to give them a huge advantage.

A lot of people's concern is that if the market converges towards a monopoly from Microsoft, we would definitely be stuck with them forever, under even worse conditions than those currently proposed for the XBox One. The barrier of entry for any new competitor would simply be much too high.

The financial disadvantage Sony is in does give way to the analogy you describe. Do you think these concerns are not justified?

Final Fantasy isn't as big as it used to be, but to be fair those two efforts were arguably the worst received titles.

On a separate point, comparing sales and suggesting that they have the same market appeal is wrong, especially considering Final Fantasy, in my mind under performed - both critically and sales wise.

Talking of sales figures, what about games that are packed in? Kinect adventures sold 18m. But who would argue that it was the selling point of kinect? Kinect was the selling point of kinect- Kinect adventures was just a pack in.

I can see special bundles pack in with Final Fantasy, and not so much with Fall out 4.

Before XIII, it was.

Look, I hate XIII as much as anyone else. But FF is still a much bigger deal than FO. You're talking about one of gaming's oldest franchises that has some of the best games ever made. FFXV exclusive is a system seller, no doubt.

Actually XIII outsold every other Final Fantasy game except for VII and VIII.

It sold less than VII, VIII, X, and XII.

If we're not gonna talk about the "quality" of the two franchises we should probably leave it before we derail this too much.

F3 shipped 4.7 million units.
FF13 shipped 6.6 million units.

F3 NPD was 1.7 million
FF13 NPD was 1.35 million.

FF13 sold 1.7 million 1st week in Japan.

Yeah, if FFXV is critically acclaimed and liked by the fanbase it will dominate any fallout title.

IF it's not shit and IF people buy it it'll sell better than any hypothetical Fallout title? Got it

Don't agree with this at all. Fallout is a mid-sized IP at this point. MS moneyhatting FO4 exclusive is not as big a deal as people are making it.

It would be enough to utterly ruin e3 for me. FO3 and New vegas was two of the best games this gen.

Yeah, if it hits the 90 mark, it'd sell consoles, in my opinion.

edit: Funnily enough, I think the Uncharted project did a lot more good to the ps3's appeal, than the final fantasy project.

The moment a new Final Fantasy that seems to fix the issues people had with the XIII saga shows up the hype for the franchise is instantly back.

3 meh games aren't enough to dull a legendary franchise.

They might be designing it to be more appealing to western tastes too. Versus looked less...

...Serah...

Than FF13 did.

It's not really about sales numbers. NSMB games sell a shit load, yet the new one isn't selling Wii U's.

A new mainline FF would be big. I don't know if you can really say 'isn't as big as it be' when we've only really had XIII/XIV for the last generation and XIV is technically being remade and re-launched later this year. Whatever XV is will probably be the proof of whether or not the brand is really suffering that much in the eyes of the consumers, and if XV fails to sell ~1 million+ in the first week then maybe Final Fantasy has gotten to a point where it won't be able to recover easily. Of course, it's not just sales but people probably just want to get XIII out of the way because it's been way too long and XIV probably shouldn't have happened to begin with in the state that it was in before.

Hmm. This is a good point. Xbone is proving a hardsell for a lot of gaffers still. Even if you buy fallout 4. With the 24 check ins, and the draconian drm, its hard to fathom whether a gaffer would rather get the rest of their library on another console/platform.

fair enough.

I don't really think a franchise's history matters as much as how it is marketed and co-marketed (maybe more importantly). Games like AssCrud, Gears, etc. had no name for themselves at all and no name recognition but you can brute force things sometimes.

How many Microsoft E3s did Tomb Raider pop up in? 2? It was bound to sell well.

The manufacturers have the power to pick winners.

Is the conference not on Spike? Didn't see it when I tried to DVR it....

Not on Spike. :( It's during prime time which is apparently hell for a conference since they have to air it ad-free.

If you have a PS3 though, there's a link to a direct feed via the "What's New" page. If not, you will have to watch it at a usual streaming site (GameTrailers, etc.).

Personally, I'll be at http://www.ustream.tv/playstation since that's their usual official channel to watch from.

This is true, the only reason FFVII was as big as it was is because it was marketed to hell and back.
