Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

Seriously Nintendo, still no online play? At least the characters are different this time through. I just hope that levels start from special worlds in 3D Land and move up from there. It'd be really lame to have to play another 2+ hours of tutorial before the real game starts.

Though it looks like there isn't a flying/tanooki suit type power up so that's good.

Nintendo games are not driven by story. To remain fresh, story driven games need to depend on new IP for fresh stories.

Nintendo games tell stories through game mechanics. That is how it has been since Mario ate his first mushroom in 1985. The creativity is through the new mechanics.

I think having Peach and Luigi kind of negates the need for easing players in.
 
3D Land is probably my favorite Mario game, possibly second only to Mario 64. I'm thrilled to see them going in this direction. They just sold a Wii U.

I wonder how some of the vocal critics in this thread would have reacted if the title was anything other than 3D World. We know very little about the structure of the game, aside from the fact that it has levels. (Like every other Mario game.)

If you dont see the creativity in the new 3d mario and MK, maybe the problem is use?

You can say a lot of the games revealed from sony/ms lack creativity.

That they play it safe by making realistic games with guns.

That some of them arent tasteful enough to make a phantasy game.
 
I think the co-op mechanics and new power ups look interesting, but the overall theme and focus of this game follow my biggest negative expectations. I've talked about this before, the reveal, but I'm repeating it now. This game likely started development before NSMBU's release, and, at that point, Nintendo seemed to sincerely believe that Mario's simple core designs and aesthetic were a big selling point - advancing further towards unique themes or any visual or story creativity would be a negative to them. I think this game's design reflects that view strongly, especially when you compare it to the changes between previous 3d Marios. I had hoped that the 3d Mario team had enough power to get away from that, but apparently they just followed Nintendo's directive for the Mario series here.

I'll probably buy this game and enjoy it, but I feel like Nintendo has now basically killed any chances they had to make the Wii U relevant.
 
This game is another example of everything about the Nintendo Direct. Looks good, but not as good as it should've been. This won't come anywhere near Galaxy 2's greatness.

And no online is the biggest fucking joke. It's so hard to continue to think Nintendo has any idea what it's doing.
 
seeing how i love the 3ds game this was a pleasant surprise.

Co op will be awesome.

but you help help but think this was rushed out after seeing mario kart.


edit: those pics help a lot the video doesnt do the game justice at all.
 
So... online multiplayer pretty much needs to happen in my mind. (as well as local of course)

I'd be severely disappointed if it didn't have online co-op
 
Yea, seeing as how this is a 3D platformer, it doesn't require the precision of 2D games. I would have thought online would be an option.

That's fine when it's true. But we can't say "the creativity is through the new mechanics" when it's clear this game isn't reinventing any wheels. It's a sequel to 3D Land.

Galaxy reinvented mechanics. Mario 64 reinvented mechanics. This is no Galaxy nor Mario 64. And because of that, we've already played with these mechanics.

This is a direct Mario 3D Land sequel with a multiplayer mode that a lot of people will never use since it won't be online. We're familiar with the way 3D Land works and we're familiar with the artstyle.

The classic Nintendo argument of "it doesn't matter what IP a game uses as long as it plays original" doesn't work here. This doesn't appear to have the freshness that the other 3D Marios do. And it's the first 3D Mario not to have that creativity, so it's a real shame.

If anything should be complained about on Miiverse it's this. Disgraceful. There's no good reason for it's omission
 
I'm sure this game will be very good and will sell well.

But it just..I dunno..feels stale.

Was looking for more from the first HD 3D Mario, honestly.
 
I remember a lot of people being lukewarm at best to 3D Land before it release, and lo and behold, public opinion became a lot more positive once it did so. Hopefully that's the case here. Of course, anything that Nintendo did with 3D Mario after the two Galaxy games was always going to be put under intense scrutiny.

Liking what I'm seeing at the moment, the cat suit looks useful and there seem to be some great ideas at play here. Plus, I don't think the game is as visually bland as many are making it out to be. Furthermore, that IGN interview seemed to suggest that the scale of Galaxy will still be present, so I'm quietly confident.
 
was my most disappointed game of the direct, felt like a 3DS game to me with the 3D title

i wanted a galaxy/universe type single player game.

dont get me wrong , its gonna be a good game but i dont have 3 people to do local co op with.


would have been a good 1-2 punch with a mario galaxy game.
 
No online is a hard pill to swallow if they really want to tout coop. It also makes no sense.

If that is the case, they better be designing it with single-player as the main priority.

Gahhh this game just keeps pissing me off. It looks cool and everything, but I may have to see actual reviews before I really get excited. I may end up loving it in the end (assuming I actually play it at some point) but everything about it is perplexing.

Is this whole argument only stemming from the fact that this is a CONSOLE 3D Mario?

And I call bullshit to the bolded. There were lots of things not even in 3D Land and then there is the other playable characters/multiplayer.

While the rest are much better, the art on this ones is atrocious. One looks directly taken from the snow stage of New Super Mario WiiU, and the dragon is probably the most horrible design I have ever seen in the series.

The stage that look best in the videos is the Bowser castle circus ones.
The music being so mediocre doesn't do wonders to this game either. Sounds like the composer is Shiho Fujii instead of Mahito, and thats is bad, really bad.
 
I'm torn on this. On the one hand, the return of Super Mario Bros. 2 style 4-player and jumping mechanics really interests me. On the other hand, I really want my spiritual Super Mario 64 sequel and not a console upgrade of a recent handheld.

I'll be indecisive until more is shown, but it's definitely not a system-seller.
 
I think it's the lack of shadows and the unnatural sheen on the characters that makes it not look as nice as say Mario Kart. If they had real shadows and at least something resembling global illumination it would look much nicer. They environments already have nice textures. Geometry could use some work.

Not even close. The main problem for me is it looks bland and lazy, it really just seems in the vein of NSMB. And whle I enjoy those games, it just doesn't cut it for a main 3d Mario game. Unimaginative.
 
There is way too much critical judgment of this game based on only a couple minutes of gameplay. It looks pretty interesting to me, and I don't even like cats. People want Ninteneo to fail because they hate their inner children.
 
I expected a big ambitious Mario game like Galaxy and Mario 64. So i'm a little disappointed I guess. But this game looks seriously amazing though. Can't wait to play it with my cousins.
 
So... at the very LEAST I was expecting a sequel to Galaxy... like Super Mario Universe... with amazing music and a much larger scale... but what we got....is this...

hmmmm..... I want to give it a chance, but the multiplayer aspect in the way that it has been implemented just puts me off big time.... the game literally looks like NEW SUPER MARIO BROS U - In 3D.

Don't know what else to say really.... :-(
 
I cant believe this is how they want players introduced to 3D Mario on Wii U. Everything about it screams middling effort compared to what they did with Galaxy, visually, audio, just a disappointment. It doesn't help that I wasn't a big fan of Mario 3D Land to begin with, so now I have to hope it really comes into its own here :(

The Galaxy games didn't have a larger scale at all - the levels were for the most part small planets that you moved to and from. Especially Galaxy 2.

Sunshine was the last one to be open world and have a "larger scale."
 
1) People don't know what 3DS graphics look like, clearly

2) Super Mario 3D Land had a shitty first reception too, and most people at least liked it. Or so it seems.

3) Seriously, if you can't see the improvements over Galaxy you're blind.

Not only that, they're using this as their flagship title this Christmas instead of a system-seller like Mario Kart. Mind-boggling.

I'm still excited for the game and find the "it looks just like the 3DS game" complaints insane, but still.

Get out. I love them and they're my main company of choice for video games, but this game does little to spark excitement. Again, it all looks so bland. Nothing like the other main Mario reveals (specially the galaxy games).

This is the reason I seem to have an unlimited capacity for enjoying Mario games. The simple mechanics are always so honed and fun, that the games never feel stale. Even though I'm effectively playing the same game over and over, year after year, generation after generation. There are certain things in life that, as long as they stay enjoyable, I could do forever.

The flip side to this is that Zelda has lost all interest to me. Incremental changes to the series are not enough, as the game is more about exploring and adventures than simple twitch platforming. The fundamentals of Zelda haven't changed, so the familiarity breeds contempt.
 
I wasn't really that excited about the prospect of another Mario Galaxy after Galaxy 2

everything we've seen from 3D World so far looks pretty great, the only issue I have is that it seems to be rather linear and level-based (again)

it's really time for another exploration-based 3D Mario-platformer, Nintendo
